All-Solid-State Batteries Using Rationally Designed Garnet Electrolyte Frameworks
Functioning bulk-type all-solid-state batteries in a practical form factor with composite positive electrodes, using Al-substituted Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) as the solid electrolyte, have been demonstrated for the first time. The devices incorporate bilayers composed of dense LLZO membranes and porous LLZO scaffolds infiltrated with LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2 and other components as positive electrodes, combined with lithium anodes. The porous scaffolds are prepared using an easily scaled freeze-tape-casting method. The unidirectional pores of the scaffold facilitate infiltration of cathode components and shorten lithium ion diffusion path lengths, while the addition of a soft ionically conductive solid to the scaffold ensures good contact among the components
Elucidating the toxic effect and disease mechanisms associated with Lyso-Gb3 in Fabry disease
Fabry disease stems from a deficiency of alpha-galactosidase and results in the accumulation of globotriaosylceramide (Gb3). However, the production of its deacylated form globotriaosylsphingosine (lyso-Gb3) is also observed and its plasma levels have closer association with disease severity. Studies have shown that lyso-Gb3 directly affects podocytes and causes sensitisation of peripheral nociceptive neurons. However, little is understood of the mechanisms of this cytotoxicity. To study the effect on neuronal cells, we incubated SH-Sy5y cells with lyso-Gb3 at low (20 ng/mL) and high (200 ng/mL) levels, to mimic mild and classical FD serum levels. We used glucosylsphingosine as a positive control to determine specific effects of lyso-Gb3. Proteomic analyses revealed that cellular systems affected by lyso-Gb3 included cell signalling particularly protein ubiquitination and protein translation. To confirm ER/proteasome perturbations, we performed an immune enrichment of ubiquitinated proteins and demonstrated specific increased protein ubiquitination at both doses. The most ubiquitinated proteins observed included the chaperone/heat shock proteins, cytoskeletal proteins and synthesis/translation proteins. To detect proteins that interact directly with lyso-Gb3, we immobilised lyso-lipids, then incubated them with neuronal cellular extracts and identified bound proteins using mass spectrometry. Proteins that specifically bound were chaperones and included HSP90, HSP60 and the TRiC complex. In conclusion, lyso-Gb3 exposure affects pathways involved in protein translation and folding. This response is observed as increased ubiquitination and changes in signalling proteins which may explain the multiple biological processes, particularly cellular remodelling, often associated with FD
Vortices and the entrainment transition in the 2D Kuramoto model
We study synchronization in the two-dimensional lattice of coupled phase
oscillators with random intrinsic frequencies. When the coupling is larger
than a threshold , there is a macroscopic cluster of
frequency-synchronized oscillators. We explain why the macroscopic cluster
disappears at . We view the system in terms of vortices, since cluster
boundaries are delineated by the motion of these topological defects. In the
entrained phase (), vortices move in fixed paths around clusters, while
in the unentrained phase (), vortices sometimes wander off. These
deviant vortices are responsible for the disappearance of the macroscopic
cluster. The regularity of vortex motion is determined by whether clusters
behave as single effective oscillators. The unentrained phase is also
characterized by time-dependent cluster structure and the presence of chaos.
Thus, the entrainment transition is actually an order-chaos transition. We
present an analytical argument for the scaling for small
lattices, where is the threshold for phase-locking. By also deriving the
scaling , we thus show that for small , in
agreement with numerics. In addition, we show how to use the linearized model

The Free Will Theorem
On the basis of three physical axioms, we prove that if the choice of a
particular type of spin 1 experiment is not a function of the information
accessible to the experimenters, then its outcome is equally not a function of
the information accessible to the particles. We show that this result is
robust, and deduce that neither hidden variable theories nor mechanisms of the
GRW type for wave function collapse can be made relativistic. We also establish

Preliminary data on microcharacters and chromosome number in Tornabenea species (Apiaceae) from Cape Verde islands
Tornabenea is a small Apiaceae genus that is endemic to the Cape Verde Islands. Its species differentiation is based just on a
few macromorphological characters: leaf shape, number and shape of umbel bracts and mericarp ribs. These characters vary
within each species and show high plasticity. Thus, in recent taxonomic data of the genus, there are different viewpoints as to
the number of species. Here, in order to improve the taxonomy of the genus, microcharacters of the vegetative and
reproductive structures of three taxa—T. insularis, T. annua and T. tenuissima—have been examined. The shape and
arrangement of hairs on the surface of the mericarps, and the presence and structure of starch grains are the only different
microcharacters noted in T. insularis and T. annua. Chromosome number of the latter two species is 2n¼18. Our
preliminary results disagree with the existing classifications of the genus Tornabenea. In fact, they do not lead to a clear
separation between T. insularis and T. annua. By contrast, it is easy to distinguish between these species and T. tenuissima,
which possesses more peculiar microcharacter

A Strong Jet Signature in the Late-Time Lightcurve of GW170817
We present new 0.6-10 GHz observations of the binary neutron star merger
GW170817 covering the period up to 300 days post-merger, taken with the Karl G.
Jansky Very Large Array, the Australia Telescope Compact Array, the Giant
Metrewave Radio Telescope and the MeerKAT telescope. We use these data to
precisely characterize the decay phase of the late-time radio light curve. We
find that the temporal decay is consistent with a power-law slope of t^-2.2,
and that the transition between the power-law rise and decay is relatively
sharp. Such a slope cannot be produced by a quasi-isotropic (cocoon-dominated)
outflow, but is instead the classic signature of a relativistic jet. This
provides strong observational evidence that GW170817 produced a successful jet,
and directly demonstrates the link between binary neutron star mergers and
short-hard GRBs. Using simple analytical arguments, we derive constraints on
the geometry and the jet opening angle of GW170817. These results are
consistent with those from our companion Very Long Baseline Interferometry

High-velocity OH megamasers in IRAS 20100-4156: Evidence for a Supermassive Black Hole
We report the discovery of new, high-velocity narrow-line components of the
OH megamaser in IRAS 20100-4156. Results from the Australian Square Kilometre
Array Pathfinder (ASKAP)'s Boolardy Engineering Test Array (BETA) and the
Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) provide two independent measurements
of the OH megamaser spectrum. We found evidence for OH megamaser clumps at
409 and 562 km/s (blue-shifted) from the systemic velocity of the galaxy,
in addition to the lines previously known. The presence of such high velocities
in the molecular emission from IRAS 201004156 could be explained by a ~50 pc
molecular ring enclosing an approximately 3.8 billion solar mass black hole. We
also discuss two alternatives, i.e. that the narrow-line masers are dynamically
coupled to the wind driven by the active galactic nucleus or they are
associated with two separate galactic nuclei. The comparison between the BETA
and ATCA spectra provides another scientific verification of ASKAP's BETA. Our
data, combined with previous measurements of the source enabled us to study the
variability of the source over a twenty-six year period. The flux density of
the brightest OH maser components has reduced by more than a factor of two
between 1988 and 2015, whereas a secondary narrow-line component has more than
doubled in the same time. Plans for high-resolution VLBI follow-up of this
source are discussed, as are prospects for discovering new OH megamasers during

Existential Contextuality and the Models of Meyer, Kent and Clifton
It is shown that the models recently proposed by Meyer, Kent and Clifton
(MKC) exhibit a novel kind of contextuality, which we term existential
contextuality. In this phenomenon it is not simply the pre-existing value but
the actual existence of an observable which is context dependent. This result
confirms the point made elsewhere, that the MKC models do not, as the authors
claim, ``nullify'' the Kochen-Specker theorem. It may also be of some

Discourse and identity in a corpus of lesbian erotica
This article uses corpus linguistic methodologies to explore representations of lesbian desires and identities in a corpus of lesbian erotica from the 1980s and 1990s. We provide a critical examination of the ways in which “lesbian gender,” power, and desire are represented, (re-)produced, and enacted, often in ways that challenge hegemonic discourses of gender and sexuality. By examining word frequencies and collocations, we critically analyze some of the themes, processes, and patterns of representation in the texts. Although rooted in linguistics, we hope this article provides an accessible, interdisciplinary, and timely contribution toward developing understandings of discursive practices surrounding gender and sexuality
