Magnetic structure and charge ordering in Fe3BO5 ludwigite
The crystal and magnetic structures of the three-leg ladder compound Fe3BO5
have been investigated by single crystal x-ray diffraction and neutron powder
diffraction. Fe3BO5 contains two types of three-leg spin ladders. It shows a
charge ordering transition at 283 K, an antiferromagnetic transition at 112 K,
ferromagnetism below 70 K and a weak ferromagnetic behavior below 40K. The
x-ray data reveal a smooth charge ordering and an incomplete charge
localization down to 110K. Below the first magnetic transition, the first type
of ladders orders as ferromagnetically coupled antiferromagnetic chains, while
below 70K the second type of ladders orders as antiferromagnetically coupled
ferromagnetic chains
Single domain magnetic helicity and triangular chirality in structurally enantiopure Ba3NbFe3Si2O14
A novel doubly chiral magnetic order is found out in the structurally chiral
langasite compound BaNbFeSiO. The magnetic moments are
distributed over planar frustrated triangular lattices of triangle units. On
each of these they form the same triangular configuration. This ferro-chiral
arrangement is helically modulated from plane to plane. Unpolarized neutron
scattering on a single crystal associated with spherical neutron polarimetry
proved that a single triangular chirality together with a single helicity is
stabilized in an enantiopure crystal. A mean field analysis allows discerning
the relevance on this selection of a twist in the plane to plane
supersuperexchange paths
CoDiab-VD: protocol of a prospective population-based cohort study on diabetes care in Switzerland.
BACKGROUND: Diabetes represents an increasing health burden worldwide. In 2010, the Public Health Department of the canton of Vaud (Switzerland) launched a regional diabetes programme entitled "Programme cantonal Diabète" (PcD), with the objectives to both decrease the incidence of diabetes and improve care for patients with diabetes. The cohort entitled CoDiab-VD emerged from that programme. It specifically aimed at following quality of diabetes care over time, at evaluating the coverage of the PcD within this canton and at assessing the impact of the PcD on care of patients with diabetes.
METHODS/DESIGN: The cohort CoDiab-VD is a prospective population-based cohort study. Patients with diabetes were recruited in two waves (autumn 2011--summer 2012) through community pharmacies. Eligible participants were non-institutionalised adult patients (≥ 18 years) with diabetes diagnosed for at least one year, residing in the canton of Vaud and coming to a participating pharmacy with a diabetes-related prescription. Women with gestational diabetes, people with obvious cognitive impairment or insufficient command of French were not eligible. Self-reported data collected, included the following primary outcomes: processes-of-care indicators (annual checks) and outcomes of care such as HbA1C, (health-related) quality of life measures (Short Form-12 Health Survey--SF-12, Audit of Diabetes-Dependent Quality of Life 19--ADDQoL) and Patient Assessment of Chronic Illness Care (PACIC). Data on diabetes, health status, healthcare utilisation, health behaviour, self-management activities and support, knowledge of, or participation to, campaigns/activities proposed by the PcD, and socio-demographics were also obtained. For consenting participants, physicians provided few additional pieces of information about processes and laboratory results. Participants will be followed once a year, via a mailed self-report questionnaire. The core of the follow-up questionnaires will be similar to the baseline one, with the addition of thematic modules adapting to the development of the PcD. Physicians will be contacted every 2 years.
DISCUSSION: CoDiab-VD will allow obtaining a broad picture of the care of patients with diabetes, as well as their needs regarding their chronic condition. The data will be used to evaluate the PcD and help prioritise targeted actions.

Effect of Sr substitution on superconductivity in Hg2(Ba1-ySry)2YCu2O8-d (part2): bond valence sum approach of the hole distribution
The effects of Sr substitution on superconductivity, and more particulary the
changes induced in the hole doping mechanism, were investigated in
Hg2(Ba1-ySry)2YCu2O8-d by a "bond valence sum" analysis with Sr content from y
= 0.0 to y = 1.0. A comparison with CuBa2YCu2O7-d and Cu2Ba2YCu2O8 systems
suggests a possible explanation of the Tc enhancement from 0 K for y = 0.0 to
42 K for y = 1.0. The charge distribution among atoms of the unit cell was
determined from the refined structure, for y = 0.0 to 1.0. It shows a charge
transfer to the superconducting CuO2 plane via two doping channels pi(1) and
pi(2), i.e. through O2(apical)-Cu and Ba/Sr-O1 bonds respectively.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Journal of Physics:

Internal-strain mediated coupling between polar Bi and magnetic Mn ions in the defect-free quadruple-perovskite BiMnMnO
By means of neutron powder diffraction, we investigated the effect of the
polar Bi ion on the magnetic ordering of the Mn ions in
BiMnMnO, the counterpart with \textit{quadruple} perovskite
structure of the \textit{simple} perovskite BiMnO. The data are consistent
with a \textit{noncentrosymmetric} spacegroup which contrasts the
\textit{centrosymmetric} one previously reported for the isovalent and
isomorphic compound LaMnMnO, which gives evidence of a
Bi-induced polarization of the lattice. At low temperature, the two
Mn sublattices of the and sites order antiferromagnetically
(AFM) in an independent manner at 25 and 55 K, similarly to the case of
LaMnMnO. However, both magnetic structures of
BiMnMnO radically differ from those of LaMnMnO.
In BiMnMnO the moments of the sites form
an anti-body AFM structure, whilst the moments \textbf{M} of the
sites result from a large and \textit{uniform} modulation along the b-axis of the moments \textbf{M} in the
-plane. The modulation is strikingly correlated with the displacements of
the Mn ions induced by the Bi ions. Our analysis unveils a strong
magnetoelastic coupling between the internal strain created by the Bi
ions and the moment of the Mn ions in the sites. This is ascribed to
the high symmetry of the oxygen sites and to the absence of oxygen defects, two
characteristics of quadruple perovskites not found in simple ones, which
prevent the release of the Bi-induced strain through distortions or
disorder. This demonstrates the possibility of a large magnetoelectric coupling
in proper ferroelectrics and suggests a novel concept of internal strain

Baseline data of a population-based cohort of patients with diabetes in Switzerland (CoDiab-VD)
QUESTIONS UNDER STUDY: To describe a population-based sample of patients with diabetes and the quality of their care in the canton of Vaud, Switzerland, as a baseline measure for the evaluation of the "Programme cantonal Diabète".
METHODS: We conducted a self-administered paper-based questionnaire survey. Non-institutionalised adult (aged ≥18 years) patients with diabetes diagnosed for at least 1 year and residing in the canton of Vaud were recruited by community pharmacies. Women with gestational diabetes, people with obvious cognitive impairment or people not sufficiently fluent in French were excluded. Primary outcomes were recommended processes-of-care and outcomes of care (glycosylated haemoglobin [HbA1c], generic and disease-specific health-related quality of life (HRQoL), overall care score in relation to the Chronic Care Model). Other measures included diabetes education, self-management support and self-efficacy, health status, health behaviour and demographics.
RESULTS: A total of 519 patients with diabetes were included. Whereas the mean HbA1c level was 7.3% (n = 177, 95% confidence interval 7.1-7.5), diabetes-specific processes-of-care and influenza vaccination were reported by less than two-thirds of the patients. Physical activity and diet recommendations results mirrored patients' difficulties with their management in daily life and diabetes-specific HRQoL was worst in the dimensions relative to diet (eating and drinking) and sex life. A minority of patients reported ever having participated in diabetes education courses (32.8%). Overall, patients were satisfied with their care and the support they received.
CONCLUSIONS: This study provides a broad picture of the experiences of people living with diabetes in the canton of Vaud. It shall guide the development of targeted interventions within the "Programme cantonal Diabète"
Formation of collective spins in frustrated clusters
Using magnetization, specific heat and neutron scattering measurements, as
well as exact calculations on realistic models, the magnetic properties of the
\lacuvo compound are characterized on a wide temperature range. At high
temperature, this oxide is well described by strongly correlated atomic =1/2
spins while decreasing the temperature it switches to a set of weakly
interacting and randomly distributed entangled pseudo spins and
. These pseudo-spins are built over frustrated clusters, similar to
the kagom\'e building block, at the vertices of a triangular superlattice, the

Crystal growth, structure and ferromagnetic properties of a Ce3Pt23Si11 single crystal
A high-quality single crystal of Ce3Pt23Si11 has been grown using the
Czochralski method. The crystal structure is presented and the chemical
composition has been checked using an electron microprobe analyzer.
Measurements of the electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility
