Preliminary design analysis for the solar optical telescope main mirror actuator
The resolution of the SOT Gregorian telescope was maintained if the conic foci of the elliptical secondary and parabolic primary were made to coincide within plus or minus 38 microns across the prime focus plane and to within 5 microns in focus. An error in coincidence across the focal plane caused all point images to show additional coma with all the comatic tails pointing in the same direction. An error in focus became magnified by the square of the magnification of the secondary and simply increased the diameter of the point source. Offsetting or rastering the sun may be accomplished by swinging the primary in an arc about the point of coincidence of the conic foci so long as the coincidence is kept to within the tolerance stated
The Least Action Principle And The Spin Of Galaxies In The Local Group
Using Peebles' least action principle, we determine trajectories for the
galaxies in the Local Group and the more massive galaxies in the Local
Neighbourhood. We deduce the resulting angular momentum for the whole of the
Local Group and study the tidal force acting on the Local Group and its
galaxies. Although Andromeda and the Milky Way dominate the tidal force acting
on each other during the present epoch, we show that there is a transition time
at before which the tidal force is dominated by galaxies outside
the Local Group in each case. This shows that the Local Group can not be
considered as an isolated system as far as the tidal forces are concerned. We
integrate the tidal torques acting on the Milky Way and Andromeda and derive
their spin angular momenta, obtaining results which are comparable with
observation.Comment: 16 pages (5 figures available on request), plain TeX, IoA-93-01-AM
Aircraft attitude measurement using a vector magnetometer
The feasibility of a vector magnetometer system was investigated by developing a technique to determine attitude given magnetic field components. Sample calculations are then made using the earth's magnetic field data acquired during actual flight conditions. Results of these calculations are compared graphically with measured attitude data acquired simultaneously with the magnetic data. The role and possible implementation of various reference angles are discussed along with other pertinent considerations. Finally, it is concluded that the earth's magnetic field as measured by modern vector magnetometers can play a significant role in attitude control systems
Small, low power analog-to-digital converter
A small, low-power, high-speed, 8-bit analog-to-digital converter using silicon chip integrated circuits is suitable for use in airborne test data systems. The successive approximation method of analog-to-digital conversion is used to generate the digital output
Narrative Quilts and Quilted Narratives: The Art of Faith Ringgold and Alice Walker
There have been two main streams of influence on Chicano artists aside from the obvious one that is the result of their artistic training, education and development in the United States. The primary influence came from Mexico, first during the colonial period in the form of New Spanish art and architecture, and then in modem times provided by the Mexican muralists through their work and their use of pre-Columbian art. The New Spanish materials formed the nucleus for the second stream of influence composed of the various manifestations of religious folk art found primarily in the Southwest
Use of a computer model in the understanding of erythropoietic control mechanisms
During an eight-week visit approximately 200 simulations using the computer model for the regulation of erythopoiesis were carries out in four general areas: with the human model simulating hypoxia and dehydration, evaluation of the simulation of dehydration using the mouse model. The experiments led to two considerations for the models. Firstly, a direct relationship between erythropoietin concentration and bone marrow sensitivity to the hormone and, secondly, a partial correction of tissue hypoxia prior to compensation by an increased hematocrit. This latter change in particular produced a better simuation of the effects of hypoxia on plasma erythropoietin concentrations
Vector magnetometer as an attitude determining instrument
The solid state vector magnetometer sensor system is presented for the accuracy and reliability of existing systems, and for providing independent measures of attitude. Since a large number of aircraft heading reference systems depend on measurement of the earth's magnetic field, it can be shown that by substituting a 3-axis magnetometer for the remote sensing unit, both heading and attitude measurement functions can be derived using common elements. Sample calculations are made using the earth's magnetic field data acquired during actual flight conditions
Coaxial inverted geometry transistor having buried emitter
The invention relates to an inverted geometry transistor wherein the emitter is buried within the substrate. The transistor can be fabricated as a part of a monolithic integrated circuit and is particularly suited for use in applications where it is desired to employ low actuating voltages. The transistor may employ the same doping levels in the collector and emitter, so these connections can be reversed
