Wind Tunnel Aerodynamic Characteristics of a Transport-type Airfoil in a Simulated Heavy Rain Environment
The effects of simulated heavy rain on the aerodynamic characteristics of an NACA 64-210 airfoil section equipped with leading-and trailing-edge high-lift devices were investigated in the Langley 14- by 22-Foot Subsonic Tunnel. The model had a chord of 2.5 ft, a span of 8 ft, and was mounted on the tunnel centerline between two large endplates. Aerodynamic measurements in and out of the simulated rain environment were obtained for dynamic pressures of 30 and 50 psf and an angle-of-attack range of 0 to 20 degrees for the cruise configuration. The rain intensity was varied to produce liquid water contents ranging from 16 to 46 gm/cu m. The results obtained for various rain intensity levels and tunnel speeds showed significant losses in maximum lift capability and increases in drag for a given lift as the liquid water content was increased. The results obtained on the landing configuration also indicate a progressive decrease in the angle of attack at which maximum lift occurred and an increase in the slope of the pitching-moment curve as the liquid water content was increased. The sensitivity of test results to the effects of the water surface tension was also investigated. A chemical was introduced into the rain environment that reduced the surface tension of water by a factor of 2. The reduction in the surface tension of water did not significantly alter the level of performance losses for the landing configuration
Leveraging the Creative Arts in Business Ethics Teaching
The purpose of this paper is to describe a way of teaching business ethics using the creative arts, especially literature and theater. By drawing on these disciplines for both method and texts, we can more easily make the connection to business as a fully human activity, concerned with how meaning is created. Students are encouraged to understand story-telling and narrative and how these tools lend insight into the daily life of businesspeople. The paper describes two main courses, Business Ethics Through Literature and Leadership, Ethics and Theater, and the rationale for each. We begin by suggesting three main leverage points that the courses engender. We then rely on the words of students who have taken the courses for insights into what they learned. We then critically assess some of the principles that have informed course design over time. We conclude by suggesting that paying attention to the creative arts gives rise to a rather different approach to business ethics, one grounded in the pragmatist tradition in philosophy
NIHTS: the near-infrared high throughput spectrograph for the Discovery Channel Telescope
NIHTS is a first-generation instrument now in use on Lowell Observatory’s Discovery Channel Telescope. It is a nearinfrared prism spectrograph of the BASS design featuring high throughput and low dispersion that is intended for observations of faint solar system and astrophysical objects over the YJHK spectral range. An unusual feature is its ability to observe simultaneously with the Large Monolithic Imager, an optical CCD camera, by means of a dichroic fold mirror. This is particularly valuable for time-variable targets such as Kuiper Belt Objects, asteroids, exoplanet transits, and brown dwarfs. We describe its design details and performance both in the lab and on the telescope
Astrophysical False Positives Encountered in Wide-Field Transit Searches
Wide-field photometric transit surveys for Jupiter-sized planets are
inundated by astrophysical false positives, namely systems that contain an
eclipsing binary and mimic the desired photometric signature. We discuss
several examples of such false alarms. These systems were initially identified
as candidates by the PSST instrument at Lowell Observatory. For three of the
examples, we present follow-up spectroscopy that demonstrates that these
systems consist of (1) an M-dwarf in eclipse in front of a larger star, (2) two
main-sequence stars presenting grazing-incidence eclipses, and (3) the blend of
an eclipsing binary with the light of a third, brighter star. For an additional
candidate, we present multi-color follow-up photometry during a subsequent time
of eclipse, which reveals that this candidate consists of a blend of an
eclipsing binary and a physically unassociated star. We discuss a couple
indicators from publicly-available catalogs that can be used to identify which
candidates are likely giant stars, a large source of the contaminants in such
