Probing the Fermi surface by positron annihilation and Compton scattering
Positron annihilation and Compton scattering are important probes of the Fermi surface. Relying on conservation
of energy and momentum, being bulk sensitive and not limited by short electronic mean-free-paths, they can
provide unique information in circumstances when other methods fail. Using a variety of examples, their contribution
to knowledge about the electronic structure of a wide range of materials is demonstrated
Fermi surface of the colossal magnetoresistance perovskite La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}MnO_{3}
Materials that exhibit colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) are currently the
focus of an intense research effort, driven by the technological applications
that their sensitivity lends them to. Using the angular correlation of photons
from electron-positron annihilation, we present a first glimpse of the Fermi
surface of a material that exhibits CMR, supported by ``virtual crystal''
electronic structure calculations. The Fermi surface is shown to be
sufficiently cubic in nature that it is likely to support nesting.Comment: 5 pages, 5 PS figure
Experimental determination of the state-dependent enhancement of the electron-positron momentum density in solids
The state-dependence of the enhancement of the electron-positron momentum
density is investigated for some transition and simple metals (Cr, V, Ag and
Al). Quantitative comparison with linearized muffin-tin orbital calculations of
the corresponding quantity in the first Brillouin zone is shown to yield a
measurement of the enhancement of the s, p and d states, independent of any
parameterizations in terms of the electron density local to the positron. An
empirical correction that can be applied to a first-principles state-dependent
model is proposed that reproduces the measured state-dependence very well,
yielding a general, predictive model for the enhancement of the momentum
distribution of positron annihilation measurements, including those of angular
correlation and coincidence Doppler broadening techniques
Fermi Surface as the Driving Mechanism for Helical Antiferromagnetic Ordering in Gd-Y Alloys
The first direct experimental evidence for the Fermi surface (FS) driving the
helical antiferromagnetic ordering in a gadolinium-yttrium alloy is reported.
The presence of a FS sheet capable of nesting is revealed, and the nesting
vector associated with the sheet is found to be in excellent agreement with the
periodicity of the helical ordering.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Vacancies, disorder-induced smearing of the electronic structure, and its implications for the superconductivity of anti-perovskite MgCNi
The anti-perovskite superconductor MgCNi was studied using
high-resolution x-ray Compton scattering combined with electronic structure
calculations. Compton scattering measurements were used to determine
experimentally a Fermi surface that showed good agreement with that of our
supercell calculations, establishing the presence of the predicted hole and
electron Fermi surface sheets. Our calculations indicate that the Fermi surface
is smeared by the disorder due to the presence of vacancies on the C and Ni
sites, but does not drastically change shape. The 20\% reduction in the Fermi
level density-of-states would lead to a significant () suppression
of the superconducting for pair-forming electron-phonon coupling.
However, we ascribe the observed much smaller reduction at our
composition (compared to the stoichiometric compound) to the suppression of
pair-breaking spin fluctuations.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figure
Funding issues in a major strategic project: A case of investment appraisal
This paper describes and allows interaction with the issues involved in a major investment decision. In the summer of 1997, UKH faced major decisions concerning the purchase and funding of new plant and equipment. The authors were given excellent access to the company and were able to document key steps in the decision process.
The issues are set out in a case study format that allows the reader to retrace the analyses carried out within UKH. A number of tasks are suggested that should test, develop and enhance a range of analytical, social and negotiation skills.
The case can be handled in a variety of ways and most of the suggested tasks can be undertaken or omitted depending on the pedagogical objectives of the course/ instructor
Maximum entropy deconvolution of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering spectra
Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) has become a powerful tool in the
study of the electronic structure of condensed matter. Although the linewidths
of many RIXS features are narrow, the experimental broadening can often hamper
the identification of spectral features. Here, we show that the Maximum Entropy
technique can successfully be applied in the deconvolution of RIXS spectra,
improving the interpretation of the loss features without a severe increase in
the noise ratio
The effect of experience, simulator-training and biometric feedback on manual ventilation technique
Objective To determine the frequency of provision and main providers (veterinary surgeons, nurses or trainees) of manual ventilation in UK veterinary practices. Furthermore, to determine the variation in peak inspiratory (inflation) pressure (PIP), applied to a lung model during manual ventilation, by three different groups of operators (inexperienced, experienced and specialist), before and after training. Study Design Questionnaire survey. Development of a lung model simulator with real-time biometric (manometry) feedback capability and its testing as a training tool on operators with a range of experiences. Methods Postal questionnaires were sent to 100 randomly selected veterinary practices. The lung model simulator was manually ventilated, in a staged process over three weeks, with and without real-time biometric feedback (PIP display), by three groups of volunteer operators: inexperienced, experienced and specialist. Results The questionnaires determined that veterinary nurses were responsible for providing the majority of manual ventilation in veterinary practices, mainly drawing on theoretical knowledge rather than any specific training. Thoracic surgery and apnoea were the main reasons for provision of manual ventilation. Specialists performed well when manually ventilating the lung model, regardless of feedback-training. Both inexperienced and experienced operators showed significant improvement in technique when using the feedback training tool: variation in PIP decreased significantly until subjects provided manual ventilation at peak inspiratory pressures within the defined optimum range. Preferences for different forms of feedback (graphical, numerical or scale display), revealed that the operators’ choice was not always the method which gave least variation in PIP. Conclusions and Clinical Relevance This study highlighted a need for training in manual ventilation at an early stage in veterinary and veterinary nursing careers and demonstrated how feedback is important in the process of experiential learning. A manometer device which can provide immediate feedback during training, or indeed in a real clinical setting, should improve patient safety
Caution is required in the implementation of 90-day mortality indicators for radiotherapy in a curative setting: A retrospective population-based analysis of over 16,000 episodes
Background: 90-day mortality (90DM) has been proposed as a clinical indicator in radiotherapy delivered in a curative setting. No large scale assessment has been made. Its value in allowing robust comparisons between centres and facilitating service improvement is unknown. Methods: All radiotherapy treatments delivered in a curative setting over seven years were extracted from the local electronic health record and linked to cancer registry data. 90DM rates were assessed and factors associated with this outcome were investigated using logistic regression. Cause of death was identified retrospectively further characterising the cause of 90DM. Results: Overall 90DM was 1.25%. Levels varied widely with diagnosis (0.20%-5.45%). Age (OR 1.066, 1.043-1.073), year of treatment (OR 0.900, 0.841-0.969) and diagnosis were significantly associated with 90DM on multi-variable logistic regression. Cause of death varied with diagnosis; 50.0% post-operative in rectal cancer, 40.4% treatment-related in head and neck cancer, 59.4% disease progression in lung cancer. Conclusion: Despite the drive to report centre level comparative outcomes, this study demonstrates that 90DM cannot be adopted routinely as a clinical indicator due to significant population heterogeneity and low event rates. Further national investigation is needed to develop a meaningful robust indicator that delivers appropriate comparisons and drive improvements in care
Fermiology via the electron momentum distribution
Investigations of the Fermi surface via the electron momentum distribution
reconstructed from either angular correlation of annihilation radiation (or
Compton scattering) experimental spectra are presented. The basis of these
experiments and mathematical methods applied in reconstructing
three-dimensional densities from line (or plane) projections measured in these
experiments are described. The review of papers where such techniques have been
applied to study the Fermi surface of metallic materials with showing their
