Investigation of Field and Laboratory Methods for Evaluating Subgrade Support in the Design of Highway Flexible Pavements
Four different methods of evaluating subgrade support under flexible pavements were studied: (1) Field CBR; (2) North Dakota Cone; (3) Bearing Plates; and (4) Laboratory CBR.
Approximately 435 miles of flexible pavements in Kentucky were represented. The roads were selected so as to give a wide range in conditions of traffic, soil areas, and design. A total of 185 locations were investigated, and 338 cone tests, 291 field CBR\u27s, and 117 series of plate tests were conducted. There were 178 subgrade samples for which the laboratory CBR test was conducted. Undisturbed samples for future triaxial tests were obtained at 21 locations.
Subgrade moisture variation was considered. Traffic was determined by loadometer surveys and use of traffic flow maps.
For the traffic imposed, adequacy of the designs -- as indicated by the presence or absence of base failures was evaluated from the standpoint of subgrade support measured by the four methods of test. Comparisons among the various methods of test in determining the subgrade support were made. The ultimate objective is a design criteria for flexible pavements in Kentucky
Magnetic Polarity Stratigraphy and \u3csup\u3e40\u3c/sup\u3eK-\u3csup\u3e40\u3c/sup\u3eAR Dating of Late Miocene and Early Pliocene Continental Deposits, Catamarca Province, NW Argentina
Magnetostratigraphic and 40K-40Ar data on a 2300 m thick sequence of continental sediments at Puerta de Corral Quemado in Catamarca Province, NW Argentina permit calibration of land mammal faunas of late Tertiary (Huayquerian and Montehermosan) age. The sequence represents (from oldest to youngest) the Chiquimil A, Araucanense, and Corral Quemado Formations. Paleomagnetic samples were collected from 99 stratigraphic levels. Strong-field thermomagnetic and isothermal remanent magnetization experiments indicate that the dominant ferrimagnetic mineral is magnetite. Progressive alternating-field (AF) and themal demagnetization of the natural remanent magnetism (NRM) demonstrates that AF demagnetization to 20 mT peak field is sufficient to isolate the primary NRM which is of depositional origin. The resulting paleomagnetic data provide a well-defined magnetic polarity zonation, although sampling is less dense in the upper half of the section. 40K-40Ar data obtained from mineral separates of four tuffs within the section allow reliable age determinations for those levels. The combined magnetostratigraphic and 40K-40Ar data allow the magnetic polarity zonation to be correlated with the magnetic polarity time scale. This correlation indicates a nearly constant rate of sediment accumulation between ~8.0 Ma and 3.5 Ma. The boundary between the Araucanense and Corral Quemado Formations approximates the boundary between the Huayquerian and Montehermosan land mammal age faunas at this locality. The data presented here allow the boundary between the Araucanense and Corral Quemado Formations to be dated at 6.4 Ma. Combined with geochronologic data from similar age rocks and faunas from San Carlos, Mendoza Province, west-central Argentina, the geochronologic data from Puerta de Corral Quemado allow the Huayquerian-Monteher-mosan land mammal age boundary to be placed tentatively at 6.0 Ma. A specimen of the fossil land mammal Cyonasua (family Procyonidae) from unit 14 of the Araucanense Formation is dated at 7.0 to 7.5 Ma. This specimen is the earliest known representative of this North American group in South America and represents the oldest dated participant in the Great American Faunal Interchange on that continent
Kentucky Research: A Flexible Pavement Design and Management System
Various strategies for designing pavement structures are discussed. Initial full-life design, stage designs and planned extensions of service life, final design, surface renewals for deslicking, no-defect designs for high-type high-volume facilities, and allowable-defect designs are considered. Economics enter in terms of salvage value of existing pavements and alternate designs using different proportions of materials within the structure.
The elastic model represented in Chevron\u27s n-layered computer program is the basis for theoretical relationships. Ranges of values are given for input variables such as Young\u27s moduli, Poisson\u27s ratio, thicknesses for layers, tire pressure, and load. The Kentucky CBR is related to modulus by E = 1500 x CBR and is correlated with the AASHO Soil Support value and other strength relationships. The modulus of crushed stone base is shown to be a function of the moduli of the asphaltic concrete and sub grade. Appropriate relationships are given
Giant Helium Dimers Produced by Photoassociation of Ultracold Metastable Atoms
We produce giant helium dimers by photoassociation of metastable helium atoms
in a magnetically trapped, ultracold cloud. The photoassociation laser is
detuned red of the atomic line and produces strong heating
of the sample when resonant with molecular bound states. The temperature of the
cloud serves as an indicator of the molecular spectrum. We report good
agreement between our spectroscopic measurements and our calculations of the
five bound states belonging to a purely long-range potential well.
These previously unobserved states have classical inner turning points of about

Periaqueductal grey EP3 receptors facilitate spinal nociception in arthritic secondary hypersensitivity
Descending controls on spinal nociceptive processing play a pivotal role in shaping the pain experience following tissue injury. Secondary hypersensitivity develops within undamaged tissue adjacent, and distant to, damaged sites. Spinal neuronal pools innervating regions of secondary hypersensitivity are dominated by descending facilitation that amplifies spinal inputs from un-sensitized peripheral nociceptors. Cyclooxygenase–prostaglandin E2 signaling within the ventrolateral periaqueductal grey (vlPAG) is pro-nociceptive in naïve and acutely inflamed animals but its contributions in more prolonged inflammation and, importantly, secondary hypersensitivity remain unknown. In naïve rats, prostaglandin EP3 receptor (EP3R) antagonism in vlPAG modulated noxious withdrawal reflex (EMG) thresholds to preferential C-, but not A-, nociceptor activation, and raised thermal withdrawal thresholds in awake animals. In rats with inflammatory arthritis, secondary mechanical and thermal hypersensitivity of the hind-paw developed, and this was associated with spinal sensitization to Anociceptor inputs alone. In arthritic rats, blockade of vlPAG EP3R raised EMG thresholds to C-nociceptor activation in the area of secondary hypersensitivity to a degree equivalent to that evoked by the same manipulation in naïve rats
Geochronology of Type Santacrucian (Middle Tertiary) Land Mammal Age, Patagonia, Argentina
Mammal-bearing lacustrine and tuffaceous sediments from three localities of the Santa Cruz Formation, type fauna of the Santacrucian Land Mammal Age, in Patagonia, southern Argentina, are calibrated by radioisotope dating with the aid of magnetostratigraphy. The strata range from about 17.6 Ma to perhaps 16.0 Ma, and are thus of late-early Miocene age. The Santacrucian Land Mammal Age ranges from about 18.0 Ma to about 15.0 Ma

The degree of acute descending control of spinal nociception in an area of primary hyperalgesia is dependent on the peripheral domain of afferent input
Descending controls of spinal nociceptive processing play a critical role in the development of inflammatory hyperalgesia. Acute peripheral nociceptor sensitization drives spinal sensitization and activates spino–supraspinal–spinal loops leading to descending inhibitory and facilitatory controls of spinal neuronal activity that further modify the extent and degree of the pain state. The afferent inputs from hairy and glabrous skin are distinct with respect to both the profile of primary afferent classes and the degree of their peripheral sensitization. It is not known whether these differences in afferent input differentially engage descending control systems to different extents or in different ways. Injection of complete Freund's adjuvant resulted in inflammation and swelling of hairy hind foot skin in rats, a transient thermal hyperalgesia lasting 72 h). In hairy skin, transient hyperalgesia was associated with sensitization of withdrawal reflexes to thermal activation of either A- or C-nociceptors. The transience of the hyperalgesia was attributable to a rapidly engaged descending inhibitory noradrenergic mechanism, which affected withdrawal responses to both A- and C-nociceptor activation and this could be reversed by intrathecal administration of yohimbine (α-2-adrenoceptor antagonist). In glabrous skin, yohimbine had no effect on an equivalent thermal inflammatory hyperalgesia. We conclude that acute inflammation and peripheral nociceptor sensitization in hind foot hairy skin, but not glabrous skin, rapidly activates a descending inhibitory noradrenergic system. This may result from differences in the engagement of descending control systems following sensitization of different primary afferent classes that innervate glabrous and hairy skin
