    SUMMARY. Today it᾽s extremely important to develop objective methods for assessing intraocular inflammation. The aim of the study – to learn the histomorphology of rabbit eye with induced non-infectious anterior and intermediate uveitis with normalization of the ocular surface temperature. Material and Methods. The temperature of the ocular surface in the projection of the ciliary body pars plana was measured on 17 chinchilla rabbits with induced non-infectious anterior and intermediate uveitis. The histomorphological examination of 6 rabbits’ eyes was carried out. Results and Discussion. The average day of temperature normalization is 46 days (SD 8.8). In the late period of the experiment, the ciliary body, like the iris, no longer exhibits signs of edema and is not infiltrated by numerous immunocompetent cells (mainly lymphocytes and plasmocytes), as we observed at the early period. Regarding the vitreous body, its structure has undergone significant changes in comparison with the early observation period. First of all, this is expressed by a sharp decrease in the number of cells of the lymphoid series, which were located in it in the previous period. In addition, the tinctorial properties of the vitreous are enhanced, which indicates in favor of its induration. Regarding the morphological state of the eyeball layers, we can say that the choroid looks unchanged. Such a phenomenon as the formation of multiple retinal tractions into the vitreous body is a new pathological formation that did not occur at the previous early stage. The main thing in the eye histological picture changes in comparison with the previous early period of the study, is the manifestations of active inflammation decline. Conclusions. According to the results of a histomorphological study, in a rabbit with induced non-infectious anterior and intermediate uveitis normalization of the ocular surface temperature occurs in the phase of proliferation and completion of the inflammatory process.РЕЗЮМЕ. На сегодняшний день крайне важной задачей является разработка объективных методов оценки внутриглазного воспаления. Цель – изучить гистоморфологическое состояние больного глаза кролика с моделированным неинфекционным передним и средним увеитом при нормализации температуры глазной поверхности в проекции цилиарного тела. Материал и методы. Проведено измерение температуры поверхности глаз в проекции плоской части цилиарного тела на 17 кроликах породы «шиншилла» с моделированным неинфекционным передним и средним увеитом. Также проведено гистоморфологическое исследование глаз 6 кроликов. Результаты. Средний срок нормализации температуры равнялся 46 дням (SD 8,8). В позднем сроке эксперимента цилиарное тело, как и радужная оболочка, уже не имеют признаков отечности и не инфильтрированны многочисленными иммунокомпетентными клетками (преимущественно лимфо- и плазмоцитами), как это имело место на раннем сроке наблюдения. Структура стекловидного тела, по сравнению с ранним периодом наблюдения, претерпела значительные изменения. Прежде всего, это выражалось резким уменьшением количества клеток лимфоидного ряда, которые располагались в нем в предыдущем сроке, хотя они и присутствовали. К тому же, усиливались тинкториальные свойства стекловидного тела, что свидетельствовало в пользу его уплотнения. Относительно морфологического состояния оболочек стенки глазного яблока, можно сказать, что собственно сосудистая оболочка выглядит не измененной. Такое явление, как образование множественных тракций сетчатки в стекловидное тело, – это новое патологическое образование, которое не встречалось на предыдущем, раннем этапе эксперимента. Главное в изменении гистологической картины глазных структур, по сравнению с предыдущим, ранним сроком исследования, является стихание в них проявлений активного воспаления. Выводы. Согласно результатам гистоморфологического исследования, у кролика с моделируемым неинфекционным передним и средним увеитом нормализация температуры глазной поверхности в проекции цилиарного тела происходит в фазы пролиферации и завершения воспалительного процесса.РЕЗЮМЕ. На сьогоднішній день вкрай важливим завданням є розробка об᾽єктивних методів оцінки внутрішньоочного запалення. Мета – вивчити гістоморфологічний стан хворого ока кроля з модельованим неінфекційним переднім і середнім увеїтом при нормалізації температури очної поверхні в проекції циліарного тіла. Матеріал і методи. Проведено вимірювання температури поверхні очей в проекції плоскої частини циліарного тіла на 17 кролях породи «шиншила» з модельованим неінфекційним переднім і середнім увеїтом. Також проведено гістоморфологічне дослідження очей 6 кролів. Результати. Середній термін нормалізації температури дорівнює 46 дням (SD 8,8). У пізньому терміні експерименту циліарне тіло, як і райдужна оболонка, вже не мають ознак набряклості і не інфільтровані численними імунокомпетентними клітинами (переважно лімфо- і плазмоцитами), як це було в ранньому терміні спостереження. Структура склоподібного тіла, порівняно з раннім періодом спостереження, зазнала значних змін. Насамперед це виражалося різким зменшенням кількості клітин лімфоїдного ряду, які визначалися в ньому в попередньому терміні, хоча вони й залишалися. До того ж, посилювалися тинкторіальні властивості склоподібного тіла, що свідчить на користь його ущільнення. Щодо морфологічного стану оболонок стінки очного яблука, можна сказати, що власне судинна оболонка виглядає не зміненою. Таке явище, як утворення множинних тракцій сітківки в склоподібне тіло, – це нове патологічне утворення, яке не зустрічалося на попередньому, ранньому етапі експерименту. Головним у зміні гістологічної картини очних структур, порівняно з попереднім раннім терміном дослідження, є стихання в них проявів активного запалення. Висновки. Згідно з результатами гістоморфологічного дослідження, у кроля з модельованим неінфекційним переднім і середнім увеїтом нормалізація температури очної поверхні в проекції циліарного тіла відбувається в фазах проліферації та завершення запального процесу

    Ehlers–Danlos syndrome: a case report

    Background: Ehlers–Danlos syndrome (EDS) is a rare disease characterized by connective tissue dysplasia, and, consequently, structural changes in ocular tissues. To the best of our knowledge, only 3 cases of surgical treatment with vitrectomy for retinal detachment in EDS have been reported in the literature. Purpose: To review an approach to medical and surgical treatment for recurrent retinal detachment in a patient with EDS. Material and Methods: Data on the clinical condition of eyes, examination findings and outcomes of conservative and surgical treatment were reported. Results: Substantial remnants of the vitreous were found in the periphery during surgical re-examination of the vitreous cavity, and were as much as possible removed with a vitreous cutter. Trypan blue staining of the retina facilitated the removal of the epiretinal membrane covering the whole posterior pole, and the membrane was completely removed with forceps. Conclusion: We argue for a more differentiated approach to the examination and treatment of patients with Ehlers–Danlos syndrome, because connective tissue dysplasia may mimic another systemic autoimmune disease. Early treatment and adequate treatment strategy enable treatment success for especially severe cases

    The 2003-4 multisite photometric campaign for the Beta Cephei and eclipsing star 16 (EN) Lacertae with an Appendix on 2 Andromedae, the variable comparison star

    A multisite photometric campaign for the Beta Cephei and eclipsing variable 16 Lacertae is reported. 749 h of high-quality differential photoelectric Stromgren, Johnson and Geneva time-series photometry were obtained with ten telescopes during 185 nights. After removing the pulsation contribution, an attempt was made to solve the resulting eclipse light curve by means of the computer program EBOP. Although a unique solution was not obtained, the range of solutions could be constrained by comparing computed positions of the secondary component in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram with evolutionary tracks. For three high-amplitude pulsation modes, the uvy and the Geneva UBG amplitude ratios are derived and compared with the theoretical ones for spherical-harmonic degrees l <= 4. The highest degree, l = 4, is shown to be incompatible with the observations. One mode is found to be radial, one is l = 1, while in the remaining case l = 2 or 3. The present multisite observations are combined with the archival photometry in order to investigate the long-term variation of the amplitudes and phases of the three high-amplitude pulsation modes. The radial mode shows a non-sinusoidal variation on a time-scale of 73 yr. The l = 1 mode is a triplet with unequal frequency spacing, giving rise to two beat-periods, 720.7 d and 29.1 yr. The amplitude and phase of the l = 2 or 3 mode vary on time-scales of 380.5 d and 43 yr.     Asteroseismology of the Beta Cephei star 12 (DD) Lacertae: photometric observations, pulsational frequency analysis and mode identification

    We report a multisite photometric campaign for the Beta Cephei star 12 Lacertae. 750 hours of high-quality differential photoelectric Stromgren, Johnson and Geneva time-series photometry were obtained with 9 telescopes during 190 nights. Our frequency analysis results in the detection of 23 sinusoidal signals in the light curves. Eleven of those correspond to independent pulsation modes, and the remainder are combination frequencies. We find some slow aperiodic variability such as that seemingly present in several Beta Cephei stars. We perform mode identification from our colour photometry, derive the spherical degree l for the five strongest modes unambiguously and provide constraints on l for the weaker modes. We find a mixture of modes of 0 <= l <= 4. In particular, we prove that the previously suspected rotationally split triplet within the modes of 12 Lac consists of modes of different l; their equal frequency splitting must thus be accidental. One of the periodic signals we detected in the light curves is argued to be a linearly stable mode excited to visible amplitude by nonlinear mode coupling via a 2:1 resonance. We also find a low-frequency signal in the light variations whose physical nature is unclear; it could be a parent or daughter mode resonantly coupled. The remaining combination frequencies are consistent with simple light-curve distortions. The range of excited pulsation frequencies of 12 Lac may be sufficiently large that it cannot be reproduced by standard models. We suspect that the star has a larger metal abundance in the pulsational driving zone, a hypothesis also capable of explaining the presence of Beta Cephei stars in the LMC.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, MNRAS, in pres

    Photometry of ET Andromedae and pulsation of HD 219891

    ET And is a binary system with a B9p(Si) star as the main component. We report on the photometric observing campaigns in 1988, 1989 and 1994 which confirmed the rotation period of 1(.)(d)618875 for ET And while refuting other published values. Furthermore, the controversial issue of pulsational stability of ET And is resolved since we have discovered pulsation for HD 219891, which was the main comparison star and sometimes exclusively used. The frequency of 10.0816 d(-1), a semi-amplitude of 2.5 mmag, T(eff) and M(v) suggest this comparison star to be a delta Scuti variable close to the blue border of the instability strip. The pulsational stability of ET And could be clearly established and hence no need exists to derive new driving mechanisms for stars between the classical instability strip and the region of slowly pulsating B-type (SPB) stars

    Multiple rare-earth ion environments in amorphous (Gd2_2O3_3)0.230_{0.230}(P2_2O5_5)0.770_{0.770} revealed by gadolinium K-edge anomalous x-ray scattering

    A Gd K-edge anomalous x-ray scattering (AXS) study is performed on the rare-earth (R) phosphate glass, (Gd2_2O3_3)0.230_{0.230}(P2_2O5_5)0.770_{0.770}, in order to determine Gd⋯Gd separations in its local structure. The minimum rare-earth separation is of particular interest given that the optical properties of these glasses can quench when rare-earth ions become too close to each other. To this end, a weak Gd⋯Gd pairwise correlation is located at 4.2(1)Å, which is representative of a metaphosphate R⋯R separation. More intense first-neighbor Gd⋯Gd pairwise correlations are found at the larger radial distributions, 4.8(1), 5.1(1), and 5.4(1)Å. These reflect a mixed ultraphosphate and metaphosphate structural character, respectively. A second-neighbor Gd⋯Gd pairwise correlation lies at 6.6(1)Å which is indicative of metaphosphate structures. Meta- and ultraphosphate classifications are made by comparing the R⋯R separations against those of rare-earth phosphate crystal structures, R(PO3_3)3_3 and RP5_5O14_{14}, respectively, or difference pair-distribution function (ΔPDF) features determined on similar glasses using difference neutron-scattering methods. The local structure of this glass is therefore found to display multiple rare-earth ion environments, presumably because its composition lies between these two stoichiometric formulae. These Gd⋯Gd separations are well-resolved in ΔPDFs that represent the AXS signal. Indeed, the spatial resolution is so good that it also enables the identification of R⋯X(X=R, P, O) pairwise correlations up to r∼9Å; their average separations lie at r∼7.1(1), 7.6(1), 7.9(1), 8.4(1), and 8.7(1)Å. This is a report of a Gd K-edge AXS study on an amorphous material. Its demonstrated ability to characterize the local structure of a glass up to such a long range of r heralds exciting prospects for AXS studies on other ternary noncrystalline materials. However, the technical challenge of such an experiment should not be underestimated, as is highlighted in this work where probing AXS signal near the Gd K edge is found to produce inelastic x-ray scattering that precludes the normal AXS methods of data processing. Nonetheless, it is shown that AXS results are not only tractable but they also reveal local structure of rare-earth phosphate glasses that is important from a materials-centered perspective and which could not be obtained by other materials characterization methods

    Don wheat: productivity and grain quality, competitiveness and varietal diversity In the structure of grain crops, winter wheat occupies 74% of the area, and yields about 80% of gross amount. Therefore, wheat grain on the Don area, its productivity and quality is the most important source of income of its producers. The main sowing areas in the south of Russia are occupied by new varieties of such three research institutes as ARC ‘Donskoy’, ‘RCG named after P.P. Lukyanenko’ and DGRIA with the leading varieties ‘Ermak’, ‘Grom’, ‘Gubernator Dona’. Many modern winter wheat varieties are sown in the inter-station variety testing in the department for winter wheat selection and seed-growing of the ARC ‘Donskoy’, which makes it possible to compare them both in grain quality and productivity and to reveal their differences and features. The analysis of the allelic composition of prolamins showed that among the Krasnodar varieties there are a lot of alleles (78%) that negatively affect on the quality of flour (Gli 1B3, 1B2) and there are very few alleles with high frost resistance (Gli 1D4, 1D7 - 30%). At the same time, the varieties of Don selection have a visa versa effect. These alleles give an advantage in frost resistance, but lead to productivity decrease

    The main reasons of difference between the quality of bought wheat and the flour made in Russia

    In recent years, Russia has returned to the number of world leaders in the production and export of wheat grain. However, a paradoxical situation has developed in the domestic wheat market. According to statistics, “almost no grain of the 1 and 2 grades (strong-valuable)” is produced in the country, and the various stores sell the top-grade flour which can be only produced (in accordance with GOST) from the grain of the 1-2 grades. The article tries to find out the reasons of the paradox. We have studied top-grade flour of three domestic producers, flour from France as well as flour and oilcake of seven varieties of domestic breeding listed in the State List as strong-valuable. For the comparative assessment we have used such efficient express-methods as electrophoresis of prolamins, SDS-sedimentation and estimation of protein content according to the Kjeldahl method. The study showed that the top-grade flour chosen for the analysis is soft (hexaploid) wheat and its gliadins do not possess alleles, which are negative for quality. SDS-sedimentation of the samples ‘Makfa’ and ‘Pudov’ corresponds to strong wheat; SDS-sedimentation of the samples ‘Petrovskie Nivy’ and ‘Ture 65’ corresponds to valuable wheat. The amount of protein in grain is on 1.6% more than in flour. The protein content in flour of domestic producers indicated on the packages does not correspond to the factual amount, and according to it the amount of protein in grain would be 13.7-15.2%, that corresponds to the grain of the 1-2 grades. GOST R 52189-2003 for wheat flour does not have any requirements to the protein content, and for grain such requirements are of great importance. For grain of the 1-2 grades, the requirements for the mass share of protein are overestimated in comparison with the scientifically justified restrictive norms on 0.5% (GOST 9353 "Wheat" (USSR) and DSTU 3768-98), and GOST R 52554-2006 itself does not give a right to maneuver in the procurement of grain, which takes place in the international requirements for some kinds of products from wheat. Such a situation is not normal. It discredits the selective achievements, misleads the state and agronomical services and requires amendments of GOST R 52554-2006 for grains of the 1-2 grades to reduce the protein content by 0.5%, and also to include in GOST R 5254-2006 “Wheat flour ...” the restrictive norms for the mass share of protein which come from the world experience (Fig. 2)
