Experimental investigations on sodium-filled heat pipes
The possibilities of producing heat pipes and, especially, the necessary capillary structures are discussed. Several types of heat pipes were made from stainless steel and tested at temperatures between 400 and 1055 deg C. The thermal power was determined by a calorimeter. Results indicate: bubble-free evaporation of sodium from rectangular open chennels is possible with a heat flux of more than 1,940 W/sq cm at 1055 C. The temperature drop along the tube could be measured only at low temperatures. A subdivided heat pipe worked against the gravitational field. A heat pipe with a capillary structure made of a rolled screen was supported by rings and bars operated at 250 W/sq cm heat flux in the evaporating region
The Quasi-1D S=1/2 Antiferromagnet Cs2CuCl4 in a Magnetic Field
Magnetic excitations of the quasi-1D S=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet (HAF)
Cs2CuCl4 have been measured as a function of magnetic field using neutron
scattering. For T<0.62 K and B=0 T the weak inter-chain coupling produces 3D
incommensurate ordering. Fields greater than Bc =1.66 T, but less than the
field (~8 T) required to fully align the spins, are observed to decouple the
chains, and the system enters a disordered intermediate-field phase (IFP). The
IFP excitations are in agreement with the predictions of Muller et al. for the
1D S=1/2 HAF, and Talstra and Haldane for the related 1/r^2 chain (the
Haldane-Shastry model). This behaviour is inconsistent with linear spin-wave
theory.Comment: 10 pages, 4 encapsulated postscript figures, LaTeX, to be published

Entangled states of trapped ions allow measuring the magnetic field gradient of a single atomic spin
Using trapped ions in an entangled state we propose detecting a magnetic
dipole of a single atom at distance of a few m. This requires a
measurement of the magnetic field gradient at a level of about 10
Tesla/m. We discuss applications e.g. in determining a wide variation of
ionic magnetic moments, for investigating the magnetic substructure of ions
with a level structure not accessible for optical cooling and detection, and for
studying exotic or rare ions, and molecular ions. The scheme may also be used
for measureing spin imbalances of neutral atoms or atomic ensembles trapped by
optical dipole forces. As the proposed method relies on techniques well
established in ion trap quantum information processing it is within reach of
current technology.Comment: 4 pages, 2 fi
Poxviral/Retroviral Chimeric Vectors Allow Cytoplasmic Production of Transducing Defective Retroviral Particles
AbstractDefective vaccinia viruses were constructed that express functional Moloney murine leukemia virus-based vector genomes, giving rise to substantial titers of transduction-competent retrovirus particles after infection of a retroviral packaging cell line. For this purpose, the proviral retrovirus genome, engineered into the vaccinia virus mutant, was subjected to several modifications, including the replacement of retroviral promoter sequences by vaccinia virus sequences and the precise fusion of the transcription stop signal downstream of and the removal of such signals within the transcription unit, allowing cytoplasmic transcription of distinct full-length retroviral transcripts. Vaccinia-mediated expression of retroviral vector particles could be observed as early as 3 h postinfection and resulted in stable transduction of NIH/3T3 target cells at higher titers than the control performed by conventional plasmid transfections. Thus at least part of the vaccinia life cycle and retroviral assembly can occur concomitantly. Due to the favorable properties of vaccinia vectors, including high coding capacity, stability, and wide host range, defective vaccinia viral/retroviral chimeric vectors are promising tools for gene therapy applications
Quantum frequency estimation with trapped ions and atoms
We discuss strategies for quantum enhanced estimation of atomic transition
frequencies with ions stored in Paul traps or neutral atoms trapped in optical
lattices. We show that only marginal quantum improvements can be achieved using
standard Ramsey interferometry in the presence of collective dephasing, which
is the major source of noise in relevant experimental setups. We therefore
analyze methods based on decoherence free subspaces and prove that quantum
enhancement can readily be achieved even in the case of significantly imperfect
state preparation and faulty detections.Comment: 5 pages + 6 pages appendices; published versio
Origin of the large phonon band-gap in SrTiO3 and the vibrational signatures of ferroelectricity in ATiO3 perovskite: First principles lattice dynamics and inelastic neutron scattering of PbTiO3, BaTiO3 and SrTiO3
We report first principles density functional perturbation theory
calculations and inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the phonon
density of states, dispersion relations and electromechanical response of
PbTiO3, BaTiO3 and SrTiO3. The phonon density-of-states of the quantum
paraelectric SrTiO3 is found to be fundamentally distinct from that of
ferroelectric PbTiO3 and BaTiO3 with a large 70-90 meV phonon band-gap. The
phonon dispersion and electromechanical response of PbTiO3 reveal giant
anisotropies. The interplay of covalent bonding and ferroelectricity, strongly
modulates the electromechanical response and give rise to spectacular
signatures in the phonon spectra. The computed charge densities have been used
to study the bonding in these perovskites. Distinct bonding characteristics in
the ferroelectric and paraelectric phases give rise to spectacular vibrational
signatures. While a large phonon band-gap in ATiO3 perovskites seems a
characteristic of quantum paraelectrics, anisotropy of the phonon spectra
correlates well with ferroelectric strength. These correlations between the
phonon spectra and ferroelectricity, can guide future efforts at custom
designing still more effective piezoelectrics for applications. These results
suggest that vibrational spectroscopy can help design novel materials.Comment: 11 pages, 4 color figures and 2 Table
Pediatric epstein-barr virus carriers with or without tonsillar enlargement may substantially contribute to spreading of the virus
BACKGROUND: Human-to-human transmission of the persistent infection establishing Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) occurs via saliva. Tonsils act as important portal of entry and exit of EBV. The contagiousness of pediatric EBV carriers and the role played by tonsillar enlargement (TE) are not known. METHODS: We compared EBV shedding in mouthwash samples from pediatric EBV carriers with or without TE to that in mouthwash samples from pediatric patients with infectious mononucleosis (IM), the symptomatic form of primary infection if delayed after the age of 5 years. EBV DNA was quantified by polymerase chain reaction, and contagiousness was assessed using the cord lymphocyte transformation assay. RESULTS: EBV carriers with TE shed EBV DNA at an almost similar frequency (although in lower amounts) as pediatric patients with acute IM but more frequently (P <.001) and in higher amounts (P = .038) than EBV carriers without TE. EBV DNA levels in mouthwash samples from EBV carriers with TE mirrored levels in tonsils and gradually declined after tonsillectomy. Almost half of the mouthwash samples from pediatric EBV carriers contained infectious EBV. CONCLUSIONS: Pediatric EBV carriers--in particular, those with TE-may considerably contribute to the spreading of EBV in industrialized countries
Cloning, expression and functional characterization of the full-length murine ADAMTS13
Functional deficiency or absence of the human von Willebrand factor (VWF)-cleaving protease (VWF-cp), recently termed ADAMTS13, has been shown to cause acquired and congenital thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), respectively. As a first step towards developing a small animal model of TTP, we have cloned the complete (non-truncated) murine Adamts13 gene from BALB/c mice liver poly A + mRNA. Murine ADAMTS13 is a 1426-amino-acid protein with a high homology and similar structural organization to the human ortholog. Transient expression of the murine Adamts13 cDNA in HEK 293 cells yielded a protein with a molecular weight of approximately 180 kDa which degraded recombinant murine VWF (rVWF) in a dose-dependent manner. The cleavage products of murine rVWF had the expected size of 140 and 170 kDa. Murine ADAMTS13 was inhibited by EDTA and the plasma from a TTP patient.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/73592/1/j.1538-7836.2005.01246.x.pd
