Synergistic multi-doping effects on the Li7La3Zr2O12 solid electrolyte for fast lithium ion conduction.
Here, we investigate the doping effects on the lithium ion transport behavior in garnet Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) from the combined experimental and theoretical approach. The concentration of Li ion vacancy generated by the inclusion of aliovalent dopants such as Al(3+) plays a key role in stabilizing the cubic LLZO. However, it is found that the site preference of Al in 24d position hinders the three dimensionally connected Li ion movement when heavily doped according to the structural refinement and the DFT calculations. In this report, we demonstrate that the multi-doping using additional Ta dopants into the Al-doped LLZO shifts the most energetically favorable sites of Al in the crystal structure from 24d to 96āh Li site, thereby providing more open space for Li ion transport. As a result of these synergistic effects, the multi-doped LLZO shows about three times higher ionic conductivity of 6.14āĆā10(-4)āS cm(-1) than that of the singly-doped LLZO with a much less efforts in stabilizing cubic phases in the synthetic condition
A rare case of primary malignant small cell carcinoma combined with urothelial cell carcinoma in the ureter
BACKGROUND: Extrapulmonary small cell carcinomas have been reported in a variety of organs, and their incidence in the genitourinary tract is second only to that in the gastrointestinal tract. To date, however, only a few cases of small cell carcinoma of the ureter have been reported. Because the extreme rarity of this type of carcinoma, its clinical behaviour, diagnostic methods, and effective treatment modalities have not yet been determined. CASE PRESENTATION: A 59-year-old man presented with a 1-month history of painless gross haematuria. Urine cytopathology revealed a urothelial carcinoma and computed tomography revealed left hydronephroureterosis with a distal ureteral stone and a mildly enhanced fungating mass just below the stone-impacted site. The preoperative TNM stage was T2N0M0. The patient underwent simultaneous diagnostic ureterorenoscopy and left laparoscopic nephroureterectomy with bladder cuff resection. Gross examination showed a 3.5 Ć 3.0 Ć 0.8 cm white, partly yellow mass in the left distal ureter. Light microscopy showed a small cell carcinoma, overlaid on a urothelial carcinoma in situ, invading the ureter and external lateral resection margins. The small cell carcinoma was diffusely positive for neuron-specific enolase, and exhibited focal positivity for CD 56, synaptophysin, chromogranin and cytokeratin 20. The patient was treated with adjuvant chemotherapy, consisting of cisplatin and etoposide, and radiation therapy, and has been well, without evidence of tumour recurrence or metastasis in the 10 months after surgery. CONCLUSION: Small cell carcinoma of the ureter is rare. Although its clinical behaviour and diagnostic modalities have not been determined and it has yet to be diagnosed immunohistopathologically, multimodality treatment including surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy may improve patient survival
Quality characteristics of rice inoculated with Inonotus obliquus mycelia and incubated under different cultivating conditions
This study was performed to investigate the quality characteristics of Inonotus obliquus mycelia rice incubated with I. obliquus (KCTC 256152). Different volumes of mycelial culture of I. obliquus were used for production of I. obliquus mycelia rice. Twenty percent of the mycelial culture was added to rice and designated as IOR-20, 30% as IOR-30 and 40% as IOR-40. Using the I. obliquus mycelia rice, the contents of Ī²-1,3-glucan, betulin, total polyphenol and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazol (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, Hunter`s color values, free amino acid content, and mineral content were investigated. The Ī²-1,3-glucan content in I. obliquus mycelia rice were in the order of IOR-30(729.7 Ī¼g/g) > IOR-20(716.0 Ī¼g/g) > IOR-40(690.5 Ī¼g/g) and those of betulin content were OR-30(1273.7 Ī¼g/g) > IOR-40 (1247.81 Ī¼g/g) > IOR-20 (1209.82 Ī¼g/g). The highest content of total polyphenols (353.6 Ī¼g/g) and activity of DPPH radical scavenging were observed in the IOR-30. The higher contents for Ī²-1,3-glucan, betulin, polyphenol, and DPPH radical scavenging were found in 30% mycelial culture treatment, showing the best condition for the production of I. obliquus mycelia. Aspartic acid (10.28 to 29.44 Ī¼g/100 g), threonine (5.43 to 11.00 Ī¼g/100 g), serine (8.84 to 14.53 Ī¼g/100 g), glutamic acid (31.01 to 53.61 Ī¼g/100 g), glycine (4.77 to 10.26 Ī¼g/100 g), valine (2.93 to 6.57 Ī¼g/100 g), and lysine (5.20 to 14.41 Ī¼g/100 g) contents were determined in the I. obliquus mycelia rice and the order was as follows; IOR-20>IOR-30>IOR-40. Cognitive and behavioral effects of lamotrigine and carbamazepine monotherapy in patients with newly diagnosed or untreated partial epilepsy
AbstractPurposeIn this prospective study, we compared the long-term cognitive and behavioral effects of lamotrigine (LTG) and carbamazepine (CBZ) in patients with newly diagnosed or untreated partial epilepsy.MethodsThis was a multicenter, open-label, randomized study that compared monotherapy with LTG and CBZ in newly diagnosed or untreated patients with partial epilepsy. We employed an 8-week titration period and a 40-week maintenance period. Neuropsychological tests, Symptom Check List-90, and QOLIE-31 were assessed at baseline, 16 weeks, and 48 weeks after drug treatment. A group-by-time interaction was the primary outcome measure and was analyzed by use of the linear mixed model.ResultsA total of 110 patients were eligible and 73 completed the 48-week study (LTG, n=39; CBZ, n=34). Among the cognitive tests, significant group-by-time interaction was identified only in phonemic fluency of Controlled Oral Word Association Task (p=0.0032) and Stroop ColorāWord Interference (p=0.0283), with a significant better performance for LTG group. All other neuropsychological tests included did not show significant group-by-time interactions. Among the subscales of Symptom Check List-90, significant group-by-time interactions were identified in Obsessive-Compulsive (p=0.0005), Paranoid Ideation (p=0.0454), Global Severity Index (p=0.0194), and Positive Symptom Total (p=0.0197), with a significant improvement for CBZ group. QOLIE-31 did not show significant group-by-time interactions.ConclusionOur data suggest that epilepsy patients on LTG have better performance on phonemic fluency and the task of Stroop ColorāWord Interference than do patients on CBZ, whereas patients on CBZ had more favorable behavioral effects on two subscales and two global scores of Symptom Check List-90 than did patients on LTG
Clinical Characteristics and Genotypes of Rotaviruses in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
BackgroundThere are few reports on the symptoms of rotavirus infections in neonates. This study aims to describe clinical signs of rotavirus infections among neonates, with a particular focus on preterm infants, and to show the distribution of genotypes in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).MethodsA prospective observational study was conducted at a regional NICU for 1 year. Stool specimens from every infant in the NICU were collected on admission, at weekly intervals, and from infants showing symptoms. Rotavirus antigens were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and genotypes were confirmed by Reverse transcription-Polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The infants were divided into three groups: symptomatic preterm infants with and without rotavirus-positive stools [Preterm(rota+) and Preterm(rotaā), respectively] and symptomatic full- or near-term infants with rotavirus-positive stools [FT/NT(rota+)]. Demographic and outcome data were compared among these groups.ResultsA total of 702 infants were evaluated for rotaviruses and 131 infants were included in this study. The prevalence of rotavirus infections was 25.2%. Preterm(rota+) differed from Preterm(rotaā) and FT/NT(rota+) with respect to frequent feeding difficulty (pĀ =Ā 0.047 and 0.034, respectively) and higher percentage of neutropenia (pĀ =Ā 0.008 and 0.011, respectively). G4P[6] was the exclusive strain in both the Preterm(rota+) (97.7%) and FT/NT(rota+) (90.2%), and it was the same for nosocomial, institutional infections, and infections acquired at home.ConclusionSystemic illness signs such as feeding difficulty and neutropenia are specific for preterm infants with rotavirus infections. G4P[6] was exclusive, regardless of preterm birth or locations of infections. This study might be helpful in developing policies for management and prevention of rotavirus infections in NICUs
A Case of Disseminated Polycystic Dilated Perivascular Spaces Presenting with Dementia and Parkinsonism
The perivascular spaces (PVSs) of the brain are lined with pia and contain interstitial fluid. In general, PVSs are small, asymptomatic, and identifiable at all ages. When PVSs are significantly enlarged, they can produce various clinical manifestations such as headache and dizziness. A 67-year-old man was admitted with cognitive impairment and gait disturbance with a 5-month history. Brain MRI showed multiple cystic PVSs in periventricular and subcortical white matter of both hemispheres. Medication with dopaminergic agents produced a moderate clinical improvement, while anticholinesterase was not effective. This case suggests that disseminated polycystic dilated PVSs may present with dementia and Parkinsonism
PVP2004-3033 NUMERICAL PREDICTION OF HOMOLOGOUS CURVES FOR THE SMART MCP
ABSTRACT A procedure for generating prefiminary homologous curves, which are used as an input for the safety analysis of SMART, was developed. A commercial code for the computational fluid dynamics was adopted as a tool for the procedure. To generate homologous curves, we define the homologous variables and construct a computational matrix. Computations were performed according to the matrix, and the results were compared and analyzed for the representative computational points among the matrix. A modification method to obtain the homologous curves from the results was suggested by using the similarity laws and the complete curves were generated. The curves were compared with available experimental data and the validity of the procedure was investigated
