The coronavirus has closed adults and children at home. We communicate by phone or the Internet. Life has moved online, it has lost its rhythm within traditional systems of school and work. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic spreading around the globe, many states have introduced numerous limitations in adults' and children's social functioning. The majority of education and care institutions have been closed, while companies and institutions whose type of activity allows to do so have decided to transform their work patterns into remote work. This new situation has particularly affected children, who, for their own and their families' safety, have been cut off from the possibility to participate in activities and events that used to be part of their daily lives. In order to look at this situation and analyse the situation of families with children, an online survey questionnaire was conducted among 158 adults that aimed to collect data from below (from the perspective of reflexive adults looking after children in the situation of spatial-mobile limitations). In the article, we discuss changes in parents' and children’s lives and analyse the social background of the areas discussed

In the times of globalization and intense migration of people, the possibility of communicating with persons representing other cultural, ethnic or national background and using different languages and cultural codes becomes a crucial task for gaining education and developing professional skills, especially among today’s young adults and young professionals. Referring to key categories - multilingualism and multimodality as key competences in the development of intercultural dialogue and international cooperation - we will outline the results of the study conducted among students participating in the Erasmus+ program. The research was carried out among students studying at one of Polish pedagogical universities between 2017 and 2019. The results reflect the experiences of students related to their participation in the program on its various stages, as well as the benefits which they observed from participating in the program and which are connected with multingualism and multimodality as key competences in the development of intercultural dialogue and international cooperation. Keywords: multilingualism, multimodality, key competences, intercultural dialogue, Erasmus + progra

In this article, through reference to the theories of multilingualism, we would like to outline issues pertaining to the bilingual upbringing of children in bicultural families and their education in Polish schools. Referring to research (interviews) with parents of bilingual children from Warsaw, we will point to strategies employed by parents who communicate with their children in two or three languages. We will also draw attention to difficulties connected with dominant and non-dominant languages (the case of grandparents). In the second section, we will discuss diverse school environments and language in schools where bilingual children function. We also explore the argumentation of both parents deciding to enrol their bilingual children in state schools with Polish as the language of instruction, and those opting for enrolment in private schools with English as the language of instruction or social schools. The research material was collected among parents of bicultural and bilingual children living in Poland, the Mazovian voivodship, including the capital city of Warsaw. The group presented consists of multinational families in which one parent (most frequently the father) comes from a country from the African continent. Keywords: multilingualism, bilingualism, the upbringing process in multinational families, school education, communicatio

Are Youth at Risk, Juveniles or Just Kids? Analysis of the Current Educational Resistance of Minors from Attendance Centers in Culturally Diverse Societies

The phenomenon of educational resistance shown by minors from disadvantaged backgrounds and placed in attendance centers is the main subject of interest in this article. This is a special group of students, because their attitude towards education is shaped by factors determined by dysfunctional families, antisocial pressure from peers, poor neighborhood, poor infrastructure, experience from the foster care institutions and a school curriculum, implemented without taking into account their specifics. Resistance is a reaction to their educational experience and perceived as a manifestation of a dominant culture associated with a form analyzed by Paul Willis. According to this concept, the connection between the hegemonic culture and subordinate groups is created not only by ethnic or national, but also by socio-cultural and economic factors. Young people from the underclass, shaped by various cultural patterns, norms, values, language and socio-economic conditions, reject the educational offer of the cultural hegemon, generating behaviors leading to school abandonment and truancy. Based on the research material collected during in-depth interviews, the educational resistance of minors was analyzed with particular attention to its causes, patterns and trajectories. Keywords: educational resistance, juveniles, multicultural societies, social diversity, in-depth intervie

Objectives: The aim of this study was the analysis of activity of selected muscles stabilizing the sacroiliac joints in pregnantwomen suffering from pelvic pain and changes in the pattern in response to the implementation of Kinesio Taping(elastic tape).Material and methods: Seventeen women with Pregnancy-related Pelvic Girdle Pain and 20 pregnant women withoutpain in the lumbar-pelvic complex were enrolled into the study. In patients with pelvic pain, the parameters describing theaction of the muscles were assessed: before the tape was applied, immediately after application, 3 days into applicationand 5 days after the cessation of taping. In the control group, the test was carried out one time. The activity of the muscleswas measured during extension of the hip from a four-point kneeling position. Results: The gluteus maximus muscle shows higher resting activity values than in the control group, before and after applicationof the tape as well as five days after the removal of the tape. Before application, the gluteus maximus activatesquicker than in the control group while the ipsilateral extensor spinae had a delayed activation when compared to thecontrol group. Conclusions: The patterns of activation of tested muscles and their action potential values are different in the groupof women with pelvic pain compared to the group without pelvic pain. The application of KT in the lumbar region appearsto alter the activation of the GM muscle as well as improve activation of IES muscle during hip extension from thefour-point-kneeling position

Reflections on the application of Korczak’s participatory methods of work with children in refugee camps

    No full text
The aim of the article is to outline the specifics of places and spaces – refugee camps and centers, where children constitute the majority. Through reference to activities implemented there and oriented towards children, we discuss their problematic character connected with e.g. the absence of participatory, rights-based approach (art. 12 CRC) that serves children’s emancipation and equality. In the second part of the article, we propose the implementation of Janusz Korczak’s methods – solutions for participatory work with children (“underprivileged” groups), which seem both timeless and universal. An ethical and contextual adaptation or inspiration based on Korczak’s methods in work designed for backgrounds connected with children remaining in closed and semi-closed systems, provides a chance for children’s basic participation in decision-making in matters that concern their lives. At the same time, it is an opportunity to learn children’s opinions and an expression of respect for the child as a per-son who functions here and now, in the place and space of his or her temporary stay – a refugee camp, where an international protection system for children and adults is far from effective

The text draws attention to the theory and practice of intercultural contact, constituting the basis of the communal functioning of communities, groups and individuals. By referring to interactionist concepts and praxis, we attempt to present the realities of conducting intercultural (Polish-Israeli) youth meetings. The meetings allow to increase the chance of achieving positive results in the area of reducing mutual stereotypes and prejudice. The text attempts to indicate the possibilities of applying the theory of intercultural contact in praxis related to international Polish-Israeli projects which conform to the framework of intercultural education.Urszula Markowska-Manista: [email protected] Zakrzewska-Olędzka: [email protected] Markowska-Manista - Katedra UNESCO im. No full text
W artykule autorki przedstawiają metody pracy partycypacyjnej z dziećmi w Domu Sierot, wykorzystywane przez Janusza Korczaka – żydowsko-polskiego pedagoga, lekarza, pisarza i działacza praw dziecka. In the text, the authors present the methods of participatory work with children applied in the Orphans’ Home by Janusz Korczak – a Jewish-Polish educator, doctor, writer and children’s rights activist. Attention is drawn to the possibility of applying Korczak’s methods in the contemporary world – particularly in intercultural work with children in difficult conditions of their functioning, in the era of increased migration and growing social inequalities. The text refers to aspects of children’s rights, their agency and participation as part of the educational approach initiated by Korczak. It is an approach based on the values of respect for the child and cooperation in partnership with the child
