Sfumato and conjunction
For the studio section of my MFA in painting thesis, I have produced a series of paintings on canvas concerned with non-objective impasto/textured color fields, some include representation in line, abstract overlays/underlays, while some involve division of the canvas into abutting characteristic approaches. The mediums used include water based & oil based paints, textural compounds (gel medium, joint compound, mastic, talc), pencil, and occasionally found objects. In this paper, I shall analyze and discuss impressions, concepts, and meditations relevant to my thesis work in particular and to the issue of reconciliation between formalist and post-modern approaches to theory/criticism in general as I relate it to the defense of my approach to artistic expression. In addition, I will survey my work in other media to find relationships supporting the concepts of my thesis paintings
A compact roller-gear pitch-yaw joint module: Design and control issues
Robotic systems have been proposed as a means of accomplishing assembly and maintenance tasks in space. The desirable characteristics of these systems include compact size, low mass, high load capacity, and programmable compliance to improve assembly performance. In addition, the mechanical system must transmit power in such a way as to allow high performance control of the system. Efficiency, linearity, low backlash, low torque ripple, and low friction are all desirable characteristics. This work presents a pitch-yaw joint module designed and built to address these issues. Its effectiveness as a two degree-of-freedom manipulator using natural admittance control, a method of force control, is demonstrated
Voxel seed coherent source analysis on transient global amnesia patients
Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a rare neurological disorder with a sudden, temporary episode of memory loss which usually occurs in old age. The episodic loss of memory becomes normal after a stipulated time of approximately 24 hours. The precise pathology is not yet completely understood. Moreover, there is no proper neuroimaging method to assess this condition. In this study, the EEG was measured at two time points one with the occurrence of the episode (acute) and the second time point after the patient returns to the normal memory condition (follow-up). The aim of the study was to look at the pathological network involved during the acute phase and the follow up phase in these patients for the five frequency bands, namely, delta, theta, alpha, beta, and gamma. The method used for the source analyses was a beamforming approach called dynamic imaging of coherent sources in the frequency domain. The seed voxel was the lesion area taken from the anatomical MRI of each patient. The cortical and subcortical network comprised of the caudate and cerebellum in case of the delta band frequency. Two temporal sources in case of the theta band. Temporal, medial frontal, parietal, putamen, and thalamus sources were found in case of the alpha band. Prefrontal, parietal, and thalamus sources were found in case of the beta band. Temporal and thalamus in case of the gamma band frequency. All these sources were involved in the acute phase. Moreover, in the follow-up phase the motor area, in all frequency bands except gamma band, was additionally active followed by parietal and occipital regions in alpha and gamma frequencies. The differences involved in the network of sources between the two phases gives us better understanding of this neurological disorder
Delaunay graph mapping based mesh deformation for simulation of a spanwise rigid and flexible flapping NACA0012 wing using DES with parallel implementation
A flapping NACA0012 wing with spanwise rigid and flexible configurations is simulated using the Delaunay graph mapping based mesh deformation technique. This mesh deformation scheme is quite efficient and gives a good alternate to the spring analogy due to its non-iterative nature and simple implementation. It is also well suited for the parallel implementation due to its preservation of the original mesh topology. The preliminary simulated case is spanwise rigid at Garrick frequency of 1.82 and Reynolds number 30,000, corresponding to the experimental data by Heathcote et. al [AIAA- 2006-2870]. The results obtained for this case are in a good agreement with the experimental data for the instantaneous thrust. The simulation also predicts the lag in flapping motion cycle and generated thrust due to the dynamic effects of the flapping cycle and a corresponding phase lag is depicted in the thrust during the flapping cycle. The detailed paper will also include the implementation and results of the spanwise flexible flapping NACA0012 wing
Identification and Molecular Characterization of Nkp30, a Novel Triggering Receptor Involved in Natural Cytotoxicity Mediated by Human Natural Killer Cells
Two major receptors involved in human natural cytotoxicity, NKp46 and NKp44, have recently been identified. However, experimental evidence suggested the existence of additional such receptor(s). In this study, by the generation of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), we identified NKp30, a novel 30-kD triggering receptor selectively expressed by all resting and activated human natural killer (NK) cells. Although mAb-mediated cross-linking of NKp30 induces strong NK cell activation, mAb-mediated masking inhibits the NK cytotoxicity against normal or tumor target cells. NKp30 cooperates with NKp46 and/or NKp44 in the induction of NK-mediated cytotoxicity against the majority of target cells, whereas it represents the major triggering receptor in the killing of certain tumors. This novel receptor is associated with CD3ζ chains that become tyrosine phosphorylated upon sodium pervanadate treatment of NK cells. Molecular cloning of NKp30 cDNA revealed a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily, characterized by a single V-type domain and a charged residue in the transmembrane portion. Moreover, we show that NKp30 is encoded by the previously identified 1C7 gene, for which the function and the cellular distribution of the putative product were not identified in previous studies
Association of KIR2DS1 and KIR2DS3 with fatal outcome in Ebola virus infection
Zaïre ebolavirus (ZEBOV) infection rapidly outruns the host's immunity and leads to death within a week. Fatal cases have been associated with an aberrant innate, proinflammatory immune response followed by a suppressed adaptive response leading to the rapid depletion of peripheral NK cells and lymphocytes. A critical role for NK cells has been suggested but not elucidated. In this genetic study, we investigated the association of KIR genotype with disease outcome by comparing genotypes of a Gabonese control population, IgG+ contacts, survivors, and fatalities of ZEBOV infection. We showed that the activating KIR2DS1 and KIR2DS3 genes associate with fatal outcome in Ebola virus infection. In addition, this study brings supplemental evidence in favor of the specificity of the IgG+ contact population. The outcome of fulminating Ebola virus infection could depend in part on the host's inherited KIR gene repertoire. This supports a key role for KIRs in disease susceptibility to infections
SPINE20 recommendations 2021: spine care for people’s health and prosperity
PurposeThe focus of SPINE20 is to develop evidence-based policy recommendations for the G20 countries to work with governments to reduce the burden of spine disease, and disability.MethodsOn September 17-18, 2021, SPINE20 held its annual meeting in Rome, Italy. Prior to the meeting, the SPINE20 created six proposed recommendations. These recommendations were uploaded to the SPINE20 website 10 days before the meeting and opened to the public for comments. The recommendations were discussed at the meeting allowing the participants to object and provide comments.ResultsIn total, 27 societies endorsed the following recommendations. SPINE20 calls upon the G20 countries: (1) to expand telehealth for the access to spine care, especially in light of the current situation with COVID-19. (2) To adopt value-based interprofessional spine care as an approach to improve patient outcomes and reduce disability. (3) To facilitate access and invest in the development of a competent rehabilitation workforce to reduce the burden of disability related to spine disorders. (4) To adopt a strategy to promote daily physical activity and exercises among the elderly population to maintain an active and independent life with a healthy spine, particularly after COVID-19 pandemic. (5) To engage in capacity building with emerging countries and underserved communities for the benefit of spine patients. (6) To promote strategies to transfer evidence-based advances into patient benefit through effective implementation processes.ConclusionsSPINE20's initiatives will make governments and decision makers aware of efforts to reduce needless suffering from disabling spine pain through education that can be instituted across the globe
