Antibacterial Activity of Leaf Extracts of Anredera cordifolia (Ten.) Steenis and Muntingia calabura L. Against Streptococcus pneumoniae
Antibacterial resistance in Streptococcus pneumoniae has been increasing and is one of ongoing global concern. The need to find new antibacterial agents against Streptococcus pneumoniae is of paramount importance. Medicinal plants are prospective sources of antibacterial agents. The aims of the present study were to determine the activity of leaf extraxt of Anredera cordifolia (Ten.) Steenis and Muntingia calabura L. against Streptococcus pneumoniae. Leaves of Anredera cordifolia (Ten.) Steenis were extracted using 96% ethanol, while the leaves of Muntingia calabura L were extracted using 100% methanol. The leaf extracts of the two plants obtained were bioassayed for antibacterial activity against Streptococcus pneumoniae ATCC 49619 and a clinical isolate Streptococcus pneumoniae PU 067. Results showed that leaf extracts of both Anredera cordifolia (Ten.) Steenis and Muntingia calabura L. have antibacterial activity in vitro against Streptococcus pneumoniae ATCC 49619 at crude extract concentrations of 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% (w/v). Both plants extracts showed strongest activity against S. pneumoniae ATCC 49619 at extract concentration of 75%. In addition, the extracts of both plants have inhibitory activity against growth of the clinical isolate Streptococcus pneumoniae PU 067. Both plant extracts showed strongest activity against S. pneumoniae PU 067 at extract concentration of 100%. Therefore, leaf extracts of Anredera cordifolia (Ten.) Steenis and Muntingia calabura L. can potentially be used as a source of antibacterial agent for Streptococcus pneumoniae.

Activity of Skin Secretions of Frog Fejervarya limnocharis and Limnonectes macrodon against Streptococcus pneumoniae Multidrug Resistant and Molecular Analysis of Species F. limnocharis
Indonesia has about 450 frog species which is approximately 20% of frog species in the world. Among frog species found in Indonesia are Fejervarya limnocharis dan Limnonectes macrodon belonging to family Dicroglossidae. Frog skin secretion is considered to have a potency to be used as an alternative source of antibacterial agent against Streptococcus pneumoniae multidrug resistant (MDR). The aims of the present study were to analyze antibacterial activity of skin secretions of F. limnocharis and L. macrodon against S. pneumoniae multidrug resistant (MDR) and conduct molecular phylogenetic analysis of the frog used to ensure classification of frog species. The release of skin secretion was stimulated using epinephrine injection. Antibacterial activity of the skin secretions was tested using the well and paper disc methods. Results showed that skin secretions of F. limnocharis have antibacterial activity against S. pneumoniae multidrug resistant (MDR) SPN1307. The activity, however, was lower compared to that of chloramphenicol in both well and paper disc methods. On the other hand, skin secretions of L. macrodon failed to inhibit the growth of S. pneumoniae multidrug resistant (MDR) SPN1307. Molecular phylogenetic analysis was carried out on F. limnocharis based on DNA sequence of a partial fragment of mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) gene. Results showed that the frog F. limnocharis is closely related (97%) to Fejervarya sp from Bali. Skin secretions of F. limnocharis, therefore, has the potency to be developed as a source of antibacterial agents against S. pneumoniae multidrug resistant (MDR) SPN1307

According to Law Number 24 of 2007, Flood is an event or condition where an area or land is submerged due to an increased volume of water. The impact of floods often causes human casualties, physical losses, property losses, social, economic losses, environmental damage, infrastructure damage, and psychological impacts. Floods occur in almost all parts of Indonesia, especially during the rainy season in areas with high rainfall intensity. AL-Fajar Islamic College, Jatiasih District, Bekasi City, West Java Province is one of the educational facilities that has and is often affected by floods in the area. The problem of limited information and public knowledge about flood disaster management is a vulnerability factor for the risks and impacts of the flood disaster itself. This requires socialization of flood management for communities affected by flood disasters. The purpose of this activity is to increase the knowledge and ability of the community in dealing with and reducing disaster risk. The results of this activity are believed to provide increased knowledge, ability and preparedness in dealing with threats and minimizing the impact of flood disasters
Detection of Subclinical Mastitis in Dairy Cows using California Mastitis Test and Udder Pathogen
Subclinical mastitis is an infection of the udder devoid of clinical symptoms, bacteria are one of the causes behind this disease. In the present study, we investigated subclinical mastitis in dairy cows using the California mastitis test (CMT) and udder pathogens from KUNAK (Kawasan Usaha Peternak Sapi Perah) Cibungbulang, Bogor, West Java, Indonesia. We randomly collected 102 milk samples from dairy farms in different stalls. We found that 87 out of the 102 (86 %) milk samples were positive for CMT test with level+1, level+2, and level+3 were 22 %, 45 %, and 33 % respectively. We also identified three different major bacterial groups: staphylococcus, streptococcus, and enterobacteria based on gram staining, oxidase test, and coagulase test. It can be concluded that the case of bovine subclinical mastitis in Kunak Bogor was very high and caused by various bacteria which infected cows

Phylogenetic Analysis of Cytochrome Oxidase I from Buduk Toads Duttaphrynus melanostictus and Phrynoidis asper from Bogor
Indonesia have high diversity of Amphibians. Amphibians have an important role in ecosystem and produce many bioactive peptides. However, the genetic information of amphibians from Indonesia is very limited, especially Duttaphrynus melanostictus and Phrynoidis asper. The aims of this study are to determine the nucleotide sequence of cytochrome oxidase I (COI) from D. melanostictus and P. asper, to analyze their genetic diversity and their phylogenetic relationship. A total 668 base pairs of COI gene fragment were successfully amplified and their nucleotide sequence determined. P. asper (5 haplotypes) samples group have high haplotype diversity compared to D. melanostictus (1 haplotype). The results of Basic Local Alignment Search Tools (BLAST) to the NCBI and BOLD database, showed 99 % - 100 % identity to sequence of D. melanostictus. For the sequence of P. asper showed 99.23 % identity to sequence P. asper in BOLD database. There was no sequence of COI gene of P. asper in NCBI database. Genetic relationship among species in family Bufonidae, indicated that D. melanostictus has closer relation to P. asper than to another species, inspite of their pharapyletic characteristic. For intern species relationship of D. melanostictus, the data showed that D. melanostictus from Bogor have closer relationship to D. melanostictus from India than D. melanostictus from China
Preparation and immunogenicity of gold glyco-nanoparticles as antipneumococcal vaccine model
Nanotechnology-based fully synthetic carbohydrate vaccines are promising alternatives to classic polysaccharide/protein conjugate vaccines. We have prepared gold glyco-nanoparticles (GNP) bearing two synthetic carbohydrate antigens related to serotypes 19F and 14 of Streptococcus pneumoniae and evaluated their immunogenicity in vivo. Results: A tetrasaccharide fragment of serotype 14 (Tetra-14), a trisaccharide fragment of serotype 19F (Tri-19F), a T-helper peptide and d -glucose were loaded onto GNP in different ratios. Mice immunization showed that the concomitant presence of Tri-19F and Tetra-14 on the same nanoparticle critically enhanced the titers of specific IgG antibodies toward type 14 polysaccharide compared with GNP exclusively displaying Tetra-14, while no IgG antibodies against type 19F polysaccharide were elicited. Conclusion: This work is a step forward toward synthetic nanosystems combining carbohydrate antigens and immunogenic peptides as potential carbohydrate-based vaccines
