Technical paper on Twin screw extruder processing technology for fibres as raw material for peat substitution
One important aim of the Organic-PLUS project is to develop resource and energy efficient technologies to produce fibres from lignocellulosic plant materials as a raw material to substitute peat.
For this purpose, Leibniz Institute für Agrartechnik und Bioekonomie (ATB), Germany leads the work in the task 5.3, “Processing of agroforestry and other plant material for improved characteristics”.
This report (Project deliverable D5.3) describes one technology available at pilot scale at ATB which changes the characteristics of plant fibres to make them better suited for peat replacement. The process is called extrusion, and is described in this report. The purpose is to inform stakeholders interested in peat replacement, including scientists involved in the Organic-PLUS project, to collect relevant materials for extrusion and to test further utilisations of extruded fibres
Weeds on hard surfaces in Saxony and efficacy of thermic weed control
1.Heißschaumverfahren „Waipuna“ in den Jahren 2006 und 2007, insgesamt 9 Flächen, zwei Anwendungen pro Jahr;
2.Heißdampfverfahren „OMK“ im Jahr 2008, 11 Flächen, drei bis vier Anwendungen pro Jahr;
During the years 2006 to 2008 a research of weed occurence on footpaths and places was carried out in the city of Chemnitz and in the surrounding area. More than 70 weed species were found. Dominant species were Poa annua L. and Taraxacum officinale Wiggers. They were found on more than 90 of the places. Mosses and Plantago major L. occurred on about 80% of the locations. Solidago canadensis L., an invasive species, was found on almost 70% of the places.
Poa annua had the highest average weed cover. Mosses and Taraxacum officinale had also a high weed cover.
During the time span from 2006 to 2010 a research of the efficacy of thermic weed control systems was carried out in the city of Chemnitz. The following systems were tested:
1.Hot foam system „Waipuna“ in 2006 and 2007, altogether 9 areas, 2 applications per year;
2.Hot steam system „OMK“ in 2008, 11 areas, 3 to 4 applications per year;
3.Hot water – hot steam system „Geysir“, in 2009 and 2010, altogether 10 areas, 3 to 4 applications per year.
These three systems had mostly good efficacy against annual weeds and mosses. They failed to control Taraxacum officinale.
None of the three systems provided a complete weed control with the above-mentioned number of applications. Weed cover was reduced by perennial application of the hot steam – hot water system „Geysir“.

Influence of Processing Parameters on Fibre Properties during Twin-Screw Extrusion of Poplar Wood Chips
For sustainable agriculture, the contentious input of peat in growing media needs to be replaced by a substitute with the best possible water-holding capacity (WHC). Wood from fast growing poplar trees, cultivated in short rotation coppices (SRC), is a suitable alternative if it is processed correctly in a twin-screw extruder. The processing parameters, such as the aperture setting of the extruder, moisture content, and specific energy demand (SED), during twin-screw extrusion, as well as their influence on fibre properties such as WHC and particle size distribution, are investigated. SRC-poplar wood chips from clone Max3 are the raw material used for this research. As a result, the best volume-based WHC (75%) at −1 kPa suction tension was achieved for dry extruded wood chip fibre at an aperture setting of 15 mm and an SED of 340 kWh*t−1. The smallest SED of 140 kWh*t−1 was measured at apertures of 35 mm and 40 mm, which resulted in a volume-based WHC of approximately 30% and a dry matter mass flow during processing of 0.289 t*h−1 (40 mm). The particle size distribution of semi-dry wood chips has the highest fine fraction as well as the smallest coarse fraction. Conclusively, poplar wood can be processed fresh and dry into fibre at an acceptable SED, which results in an acceptable WHC
Fertility preservation in women—a practical guide to preservation techniques and therapeutic strategies in breast cancer, Hodgkin's lymphoma and borderline ovarian tumours by the fertility preservation network FertiPROTEKT
Purpose: Fertility preservation methods are playing an increasing role in women up to the age of 40years because of rising survival rates in those affected by cancer. However, balanced practical recommendations concerning all relevant fertility preservation, to support doctors in counselling and treating patients, are still rare. Methods: These recommendations were prepared by the network FertiPROTEKT ( http://www.fertiprotect.eu ), a collaboration of around 70 centres in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. The recommendations were developed by specialists in reproductive medicine, reproductive biology and oncology, which gave a comprehensive overview of all named techniques as well as their benefits and risks. Furthermore, practice-orientated recommendations for the individual use of fertility preservation methods for various indications such as breast cancer, Hodgkin's lymphoma and borderline ovarian tumours are given. Results: Various options such as ovarian stimulation and cryopreservation of unfertilised or fertilised oocytes, cryopreservation and transplantation of ovarian tissue, GnRH-agonist administration and transposition of the ovaries can be offered. All the techniques can be performed alone or in combination within a maximum of 2weeks with low risk and different success rates. Conclusions: Fertility preservation in women has become an option with realistic chances to become pregnant after cytotoxic therapies. The information provided allows a well balanced and realistic counselling and treatmen

Polymeric Liquids in Nanoporous Photonic Structures: From Precursor Film Spreading to Imbibition Dynamics at the Nanoscale
Polymers are known to wet nanopores with high surface energy through an
atomically thin precursor film followed by slower capillary filling. We present
here light interference spectroscopy using a nanoporous membrane-based chip
that allows us to observe the dynamics of these phenomena in situ with
sub-nanometer spatial and milli- to microsecond temporal resolution. The device
consists of a mesoporous silicon film (average pore size 6 nm) with an
integrated photonic crystal, which permits to simultaneously measure the phase
shift of the thin-film interference and the resonance of the photonic crystal
upon imbibition. For a styrene dimer, we find a flat fluid front without a
precursor film, while the pentamer forms an expanding molecular thin film
moving in front of the menisci of the capillary filling. These different
behaviors are attributed to a significantly faster pore-surface diffusion
compared to the imbibition dynamics for the pentamer and vice versa for the
dimer. In addition, both oligomers exhibit anomalously slow imbibition
dynamics, which could be explained by apparent viscosities of six and eleven
times the bulk value, respectively. However, a more consistent description of
the dynamics is achieved by a constriction model that emphasizes the increasing
importance of local undulations in the pore radius with the molecular size and
includes a sub-nanometer hydrodynamic dead, immobile zone at the pore wall, but
otherwise uses bulk fluid parameters. Overall, our study illustrates that
interferometric, opto-fluidic experiments with nanoporous media allow for a
remarkably detailed exploration of the nano-rheology of polymeric liquids.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure
