Paradoxes of Traffic Flow and Economics of Congestion Pricing
This paper utilizes a unique county-level dataset to examine technical efficiency and technology gap in China’s agriculture. We classify the counties into four regions with distinctive levels of economic development, and hence production technologies. A meta-frontier analysis is applied to the counties. We find that although the eastern counties have the highest efficiency scores with respect to the regional frontier but the northeastern region leads in terms of agricultural production technology nationwide. Meanwhile, the mean efficiency of the northeastern counties is particularly low, suggesting technology and knowledge diffusion within region might help to improve production efficiency and thus output.China’s grain production; County-level; Metafrontier; Stochastic production frontier; Technical efficiency
Dirac Neutrino Masses in NCG
Several models in NCG with mild changes to the standard model(SM)are
introduced to discuss the neutrino mass problem. We use two constraints,
Poincar duality and gauge anomaly free, to discuss the possibility
of containing right-handed neutrinos in them. Our work shows that no model in
this paper, with each generation containing a right-handed neutrino, can
satisfy these two constraints in the same time. So, to consist with neutrino
oscillation experiment results, maybe fundamental changes to the present
version of NCG are usually needed to include Dirac massive neutrinos.Comment: 14 page
Optimal binary trees with height restrictions on left and right branches
We begin with background definitions on binary trees. Then we review known algorithms for finding optimal binary search trees. Knuth\u27s famous algorithm, presented in the second chapter, is the cornerstone for our work. It depends on two important results: the Quadrangle Lemma and the Monoticity Theorem. These enabled Knuth to achieve a time complexity of O(n2), while previous algorithms had been O(n3) (n = size of input). We present the known generalization of Knuth\u27s algorithm to trees with a height restriction. Finally, we consider the previously unexamined case of trees with different restrictions on left and right heights. We prove the Quadrangle Lemma and the Monoticity Theorem in this case, and present an algorithm based on this
Sprinklers: A Randomized Variable-Size Striping Approach to Reordering-Free Load-Balanced Switching
Internet traffic continues to grow exponentially, calling for switches that
can scale well in both size and speed. While load-balanced switches can achieve
such scalability, they suffer from a fundamental packet reordering problem.
Existing proposals either suffer from poor worst-case packet delays or require
sophisticated matching mechanisms. In this paper, we propose a new family of
stable load-balanced switches called "Sprinklers" that has comparable
implementation cost and performance as the baseline load-balanced switch, but
yet can guarantee packet ordering. The main idea is to force all packets within
the same virtual output queue (VOQ) to traverse the same "fat path" through the
switch, so that packet reordering cannot occur. At the core of Sprinklers are
two key innovations: a randomized way to determine the "fat path" for each VOQ,
and a way to determine its "fatness" roughly in proportion to the rate of the
VOQ. These innovations enable Sprinklers to achieve near-perfect load-balancing
under arbitrary admissible traffic. Proving this property rigorously using
novel worst-case large deviation techniques is another key contribution of this
