MDSCs: Key Criminals of Tumor Pre-metastatic Niche Formation

    Get PDF
The emergence of disseminated metastases remains the primary cause of mortality in cancer patients. Formation of the pre-metastatic niche (PMN), which precedes the establishment of tumor lesions, is critical for metastases. Bone marrow-derived myeloid cells (BMDCs) are indispensable for PMN formation. Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) are a population of immature myeloid cells that accumulate in patients with cancer and appear in the early PMN. The mechanisms by which MDSCs establish the pre-metastatic microenvironment in distant organs are largely unknown, although MDSCs play an essential role in metastasis. Here, we summarize the key factors associated with the recruitment and activation of MDSCs in the PMN and review the mechanisms by which MDSCs regulate PMN formation and evolution. Finally, we predict the potential value of MDSCs in PMN detection and therapy

The existing of compositional gradient in volatile oil reservoir makes the reservoir special. It will have great significance in calculating reserves, determining reasonable development mode and improving volatile oil recovery,if the composition profile and vertical distribution characteristic of the underground fluid are considered, when developing volatile oil reservoir. Based on the theory of compositional gradient[1], the paper analyzed the compositional gradient in various kinds of reservoir, researched the impact of compositional gradient on reserves estimation in volatile oil reservoir, and then evaluated the final recovery efficiency of different development modes (depletion, water-flood, gas injection) with the method of compositional numerical simulation. Results show that: If the reservoir fluid contains more light components, the compositional gradient phenomenon will be more obvious; by choosing fluid samples at the middle of the reservoir to calculate reserves of the volatile oil reservoir, accurate value will be obtained; when developing volatile oil reservoirs, the compositional gradient phenomenon affects greater on recovery efficiency of gas injection development than that of depletion and water-flood development. The achievements provide theoretical guidance and basis for volatile oil reservoir development.Key words: Volatile oil reservoir; Compositional gradient; Compositional simulation; Development mode; Phase behavio

Plant–plant interactions vary greatly along a flooding gradient in a dam-induced riparian habitat

Plant–plant interactions under extreme environmental stress are still controversial. The stress gradient hypothesis (SGH) proposes that facilitation prevails under extreme environmental stresses, while an alternative view states that facilitation collapses or even switches back to competition at the extreme end of stress gradients. However, how the relationship between plant–plant interaction and periodic extreme flooding stress varies and its underlying mechanism are still unclear in a dam-regulated riparian ecosystem. We established a controlled experiment using two dominant species pairs (Cynodon dactylon–Cyperus rotundus and C. dactylon–Xanthium sibiricum) in the water level fluctuating zone of the Three Gorges Dam to examine their growth responses to the periodic extreme flooding stress. The results showed that as flooding stress increased, the competitive effect of C. dactylon on X. sibiricum shifted to facilitation, whereas the effect of X. sibiricum on C. dactylon maintained a strong inhibition. The plant height of X. sibiricum was the most important driver of the interaction between X. sibiricum and C. dactylon along the flooding gradient. The net effect of C. dactylon on C. rotundus shifted from neutral to negative, and the inhibitory effect of C. rotundus on C. dactylon became stronger at the extreme end of flooding stress. The root biomass of the two species was the key trait regulating their interaction with increasing flooding stress. Overall, the SGH was partially supported along our periodic extreme flooding stress gradient. Aboveground resource (light) might be the dominant factor driving the response of the interaction between annual plants and perennial clonal plants to periodic flooding stress, whereas belowground resource (water and nutrients) was probably the dominant factor for perennial clonal plants. Our study will help to further understand the environmental responses of plant–plant relationships and their regulatory mechanism, and the succession of riparian plant communities under extreme environmental changes, providing a basic theoretical basis and data support for the ecological restoration and management of riparian wetland vegetation

Two-dimensional (2D) rare-earth oxides (REOs) are a large family of materials with various intriguing applications and precise facet control is essential for investigating new properties in the 2D limit. However, a bottleneck remains with regard to obtaining their 2D single crystals with specific facets because of the intrinsic non-layered structure and disparate thermodynamic stability of different facets. Herein, for the first time, we achieve the synthesis of a wide variety of high-quality 2D REO single crystals with tailorable facets via designing a hard-soft-acid-base couple for controlling the 2D nucleation of the predetermined facets and adjusting the growth mode and direction of crystals. Also, the facet-related magnetic properties of 2D REO single crystals were revealed. Our approach provides a foundation for further exploring other facet-dependent properties and various applications of 2D REO, as well as inspiration for the precise growth of other non-layered 2D materials

Role of myeloid-derived suppressor cells in the promotion and immunotherapy of colitis-associated cancer

Colitis-associated cancer (CAC) is a specific type of colorectal cancer that develops from inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) are a heterogeneous population of immature myeloid cells that are essential for the pathological processes of inflammation and cancer. Accumulating evidence indicates that MDSCs play different but vital roles during IBD and CAC development and impede CAC immunotherapy. New insights into the regulatory network of MDSCs in the CAC pathogenesis are opening new avenues for developing strategies to enhance the effectiveness of CAC treatment. In this review, we explore the role of MDSCs in chronic inflammation, dysplasia and CAC and summarize the potential CAC therapeutic strategies based on MDSC blockade

The treatment of depressive symptoms of bipolar disorder (BD) has received increasing attention. Recently, some studies have shown that bright light therapy (BLT) seems to be useful for BD depression. This meta-analysis is intended to further elucidate the role of BLT in depressive symptoms in patients with BD. Register of Systematic Reviews PROSPERO: CRD 420191 33642.Randomized controlled trials and cohort studies were retrieved in PubMed, Cochrane Library, EMbase, Web of Science, CINHAL, CBM, CNKI, VIP, and Wanfang from their foundation to March 2020, and other sources as supplement was also retrieved. Data were extracted after strict evaluation of literature quality by two researchers, and Meta-analysis was conducted on literatures that met the inclusion criteria. Meta-analysis was performed using Revman 5.3 software. In total, 12 studies including 847 patients with BD depression were included in our meta-analysis. A meta-analysis found significant differences between BLT and placebo for the following outcomes: (1) depression severity before and after BLT [SMD = -0.43, 95% CI (-0.73,-0.13), P<0.05] in RCT and [SMD = -2.12, 95% CI (-2.3,-1.94), P<0.05] in cohort studies.; (2) the efficacy of duration/timing of light therapy for depressive symptoms in BD [I2 = 85%, SMD = -1.88, 95% CI (-2.04, -1.71),P<0.05] and [I2 = 71%, SMD = -2.1,95% CI(-2.24, -1.96), P<0.05]; (3) the efficacy of different color/color temperatures for depressive symptoms in BD [I2 = 0%, SMD = -0.56, 95% CI (-0.92, -0.19), P<0.05] and [I2 = 97%, SMD = -1.74, 95% CI (-1.99, -1.49), P<0.05].We performed a subgroup meta-analysis of studies that used different light intensities. The results showed that light intensity≥5000 lux significantly reduced the severity of depression. And patients without psychotropic drugs revealed significantly decreased disease severity [I2 = 0%, SMD = -0.6, 95% CI (-1.06,-0.13), P<0.05]. Limitations of the study include studies only assessed short-term effects, and insufficient duration may underestimate adverse reactions and efficacy. Our results highlight the significant efficiency of BLT in the treatment of bipolar depression. Prospective studies with more rigorous design and consistent follow-up

Improvement in Light Output of Ultraviolet Light-Emitting Diodes with Patterned Double-Layer ITO by Laser Direct Writing

    No full text
A patterned double-layer indium-tin oxide (ITO), including the first unpatterned ITO layer serving as current spreading and the second patterned ITO layer serving as light extracting, was applied to obtain uniform current spreading and high light extraction efficiency (LEE) of GaN-based ultraviolet (UV) light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Periodic pinhole patterns were formed on the second ITO layer by laser direct writing to increase the LEE of UV LED. Effects of interval of pinhole patterns on optical and electrical properties of UV LED with patterned double-layer ITO were studied by numerical simulations and experimental investigations. Due to scattering out of waveguided light trapped inside the GaN film, LEE of UV LED with patterned double-layer ITO was improved as compared to UV LED with planar double-layer ITO. As interval of pinhole patterns decreased, the light output power (LOP) of UV LED with patterned double-layer ITO increased. In addition, UV LED with patterned double-layer ITO exhibited a slight degradation of current spreading as compared to the UV LED with a planar double-layer ITO. The forward voltage of UV LED with patterned double-layer ITO increased as the interval of pinhole patterns decreased

    No full text
Aiming at the problem of insufficient primary frequency regulation resources of power grid in the future, an adaptive control strategy based on charging and discharging margin is proposed for virtual energy storage of electric vehicle aggregation to participate in primary frequency regulation of power grid. Firstly, regulatory and operating range of the electric vehicle is analyzed. Secondly, the primary frequency regulation method of electric vehicle aggregation participating in the power grid is studied. Considering the margin of charging and discharging time and state of charge (SOC), charging and discharging margin index of electric vehicles is designed. Then, an adaptive primary frequency regulation control strategy based on charging and discharging margin is proposed to optimize the droop power of electric vehicles participating in primary frequency regulation, which considers both requirements of primary frequency regulation of power grid and charging, discharging of electric vehicles. Then, the primary frequency regulation capability of virtual energy storage in electric vehicle aggregation is evaluated by regular update, and the evaluation index of primary frequency regulation effect is proposed. Finally, through the simulation analysis of regional power grid cases, the effectiveness of the proposed strategy in reducing the system frequency deviation and optimizing the primary frequency regulation output of electric vehicles is verified
