Factors influencing progression rate in higher education in Oman-data engineering and statistical approach
The paper highlights key issues in student progression in a tertiary level educational system. The colleges operate under the ministry of higher education, ministry of men power. Private universities are affiliated with the external universities from the developed world. Students come from various backgrounds and allocation of students to the education system depends on the performance of the student in the school. The good students get placed in state universities and colleges and those who could not get in the state universities get placed in private universities and colleges. Progression rates in all the type of system is a challenge. We have addressed a way to overcome this problem in this paper. An attempt is made to analyze the factors influencing progression rate in higher education system via data engineering and statistical approach
Breeding for Biofortification Traits in Rice: Means to Eradicate Hidden Hunger
Rice (Oryza sativa L.) supplies nourishment to about half of the population of the world’s inhabitants. Of them, more than 2 billion people suffer from ‘hidden hunger’ in which they are unable to meet the recommended nutrients or micronutrients from their daily dietary intake. Biofortification refers to developing micronutrient-rich diet foods using traditional breeding methods and modern biotechnology, a promising approach to nutrition enrichment as part of an integrated strategy for food systems. To improve the profile of rice grain for the biofortification-related traits, understanding the genetics of important biofortification traits is required. Moreover, these attributes are quantitative in nature and are influenced by several genes and environmental variables. In the course of past decades, several endeavours such as finding the important quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for improving the nutrient profile of rice seeds were successfully undertaken. Breaking Yield Ceiling in Wheat: Progress and Future Prospects
Wheat is one of the most important staple crops that contribute considerably to global food and nutritional security. The future projections of the demand for wheat show significant enhancement owing to the population growth and probable changes in diets. Further, historical yield trends show a reduction in the relative rate of gain for grain yield over time. To maintain future food security, there is a strong need to find ways to further increase the yield potential of wheat. Grain yield is a quantitative trait that is highly influenced by the environment. It is determined by various interlinked yield component traits. Molecular breeding approaches have already proven useful in improving the grain yield of wheat and recent advances in high-throughput genotyping platforms now have remodelled molecular breeding to genomics-assisted breeding. Hence, here in this chapter, we have discussed various advancements in understanding the genetics of grain yield, its major components, and summarised the various powerful strategies, such as gene cloning, mining superior alleles, transgenic technologies, advanced genome editing techniques, genomic selection, genome-wide association studies-assisted genomic selection, haplotype-based breeding (HBB), which may be/being used for grain yield improvement in wheat and as the new breeding strategies they could also be utilised to break the yield ceiling in wheat
