Graphene Oxide Reduces the Hydrolytic Degradation in Polyamide-11
Graphene oxide (GO) was incorporated into polyamide-11 (PA11) via in-situ polymerization. The GO-PA11 nano-composite had elevated resistance to hydrolytic degradation. At a loading of 1 mg/g, GO to PA11, the accelerated aging equilibrium molecular weight of GO-PA11 was higher (33 and 34 kg/mol at 100 and 120 C, respectively) compared to neat PA11 (23 and 24 kg/mol at 100 and 120 C, respectively). Neat PA11 had hydrolysis rate constants (kH) of 2.8 and 12 ( 10(exp -2) day(exp -1)) when aged at 100 and 120 C, respectively, and re-polymerization rate constants (kP) of 5.0 and 23 ( 10(exp -5) day(exp -1)), respectively. The higher equilibrium molecular weight for GO-PA11 loaded at 1 mg/g was the result of a decreased kH, 1.8 and 4.5 ( 10(exp -2) day(exp -1)), and an increased kP, 10 and 17 ( 10(exp -5) day(exp -1)) compared with neat PA11 at 100 and 120 C, respectively. The decreased rate of degradation and resulting 40% increased equilibrium molecular weight of GO-PA11 was attributed to the highly asymmetric planar GO nano-sheets that inhibited the molecular mobility of water and the polymer chain. The crystallinity of the polymer matrix was similarly affected by a reduction in chain mobility during annealing due to the GO nanoparticles' chemistry and highly asymmetric nano-planar sheet structure
Technology for monitoring everyday prosthesis use: a systematic review
BACKGROUND
Understanding how prostheses are used in everyday life is central to the design, provision and evaluation of
prosthetic devices and associated services. This paper reviews the scientific literature on methodologies and
technologies that have been used to assess the daily use of both upper- and lower-limb prostheses. It discusses
the types of studies that have been undertaken, the technologies used to monitor physical activity, the benefits
of monitoring daily living and the barriers to long-term monitoring.
METHODS
A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, CINAHL and EMBASE of
studies that monitored the activity of prosthesis-users during daily-living.
RESULTS
60 lower-limb studies and 9 upper-limb studies were identified for inclusion in the review. The first studies in
the lower-limb field date from the 1990s and the number has increased steadily since the early 2000s. In contrast,
the studies in the upper-limb field have only begun to emerge over the past few years. The early lower-limb
studies focused on the development or validation of actimeters, algorithms and/or scores for activity
classification. However, most of the recent lower-limb studies used activity monitoring to compare prosthetic components. The lower-limb studies mainly used step-counts as their only measure of activity, focusing on the
amount of activity, not the type and quality of movements. In comparison, the small number of upper-limb
studies were fairly evenly spread between development of algorithms, comparison of everyday activity to
clinical scores, and comparison of different prosthesis user populations. Most upper-limb papers reported the
degree of symmetry in activity levels between the arm with the prosthesis and the intact arm.
CONCLUSIONS
Activity monitoring technology used in conjunction with clinical scores and user feedback, offers significant
insights into how prostheses are used and whether they meet the user’s requirements. However, the cost, limited
battery-life and lack of availability in many countries mean that using sensors to understand the daily use of
prostheses and the types of activity being performed has not yet become a feasible standard clinical practice.
This review provides recommendations for the research and clinical communities to advance this area for the
benefit of prosthesis users
Key Science Goals for the Next Generation Very Large Array (ngVLA): Report from the ngVLA Science Advisory Council
This document describes some of the fundamental astrophysical problems that
require observing capabilities at millimeter- and centimeter wavelengths well
beyond those of existing, or already planned, telescopes. The results
summarized in this report follow a solicitation from the National Radio
Astronomy Observatory to develop key science cases for a future U. S.-led radio
telescope, the "next generation Very Large Array" (ngVLA). The ngVLA will have
roughly 10 times the collecting area of the Jansky VLA, operate at frequencies
from 1 GHz to 116 GHz with up to 20 GHz of bandwidth, possess a compact core
for high surface-brightness sensitivity, and extended baselines of at least
hundreds of kilometers and ultimately across the continent to provide
high-resolution imaging. The ngVLA builds on the scientific and technical
legacy of the Jansky VLA and ALMA, and will be designed to provide the next
leap forward in our understanding of planets, galaxies, and black holes.Comment: ngVLA memo 1
The Science Case for an Extended Spitzer Mission
Although the final observations of the Spitzer Warm Mission are currently
scheduled for March 2019, it can continue operations through the end of the
decade with no loss of photometric precision. As we will show, there is a
strong science case for extending the current Warm Mission to December 2020.
Spitzer has already made major impacts in the fields of exoplanets (including
microlensing events), characterizing near Earth objects, enhancing our
knowledge of nearby stars and brown dwarfs, understanding the properties and
structure of our Milky Way galaxy, and deep wide-field extragalactic surveys to
study galaxy birth and evolution. By extending Spitzer through 2020, it can
continue to make ground-breaking discoveries in those fields, and provide
crucial support to the NASA flagship missions JWST and WFIRST, as well as the
upcoming TESS mission, and it will complement ground-based observations by LSST
and the new large telescopes of the next decade. This scientific program
addresses NASA's Science Mission Directive's objectives in astrophysics, which
include discovering how the universe works, exploring how it began and evolved,

Planck 2015 results. XXV. Diffuse low-frequency Galactic foregrounds
Interstellar and circumstellar matter.-- et al.We discuss the Galactic foreground emission between 20 and 100 GHz based on observations by Planck and WMAP. The total intensity in this part of the spectrum is dominated by free-free and spinning dust emission, whereas the polarized intensity is dominated by synchrotron emission. The Commander component-separation tool has been used to separate the various astrophysical processes in total intensity. Comparison with radio recombination line templates verifies the recovery of the free-free emission along the Galactic plane. Comparison of the high-latitude Hα emission with our free-free map shows residuals that correlate with dust optical depth, consistent with a fraction (≈30%) of Hα having been scattered by high-latitude dust. We highlight a number of diffuse spinning dust morphological features at high latitude. There is substantial spatial variation in the spinning dust spectrum, with the emission peak (in Iν) ranging from below 20 GHz to more than 50 GHz. There is a strong tendency for the spinning dust component near many prominent H ii regions to have a higher peak frequency, suggesting that this increase in peak frequency is associated with dust in the photo-dissociation regions around the nebulae. The emissivity of spinning dust in these diffuse regions is of the same order as previous detections in the literature. Over the entire sky, the Commander solution finds more anomalous microwave emission (AME) than the WMAP component maps, at the expense of synchrotron and free-free emission. This can be explained by the difficulty in separating multiple broadband components with a limited number of frequency maps. Future surveys, particularly at 5–20 GHz, will greatly improve the separation by constraining the synchrotron spectrum. We combine Planck and WMAP data to make the highest signal-to-noise ratio maps yet of the intensity of the all-sky polarized synchrotron emission at frequencies above a few GHz. Most of the high-latitude polarized emission is associated with distinct large-scale loops and spurs, and we re-discuss their structure. We argue that nearly all the emission at 40deg > l > −90deg is part of the Loop I structure, and show that the emission extends much further in to the southern Galactic hemisphere than previously recognised, giving Loop I an ovoid rather than circular outline. However, it does not continue as far as the “Fermi bubble/microwave haze”, making it less probable that these are part of the same structure. We identify a number of new faint features in the polarized sky, including a dearth of polarized synchrotron emission directly correlated with a narrow, roughly 20deg long filament seen in Hα at high Galactic latitude. Pharmacokinetic and Pharmacodynamic Comparison of Once-Daily Efavirenz (400 mg vs. 600 mg) in Treatment-Naïve HIV-Infected Patients: Results of the ENCORE1 Study.

Eu-Social Science: The Role of Internet Social Networks in the Collection of Bee Biodiversity Data
Background
Monitoring change in species diversity, community composition and phenology is vital to assess the impacts of anthropogenic activity and natural change. However, monitoring by trained scientists is time consuming and expensive.
Methodology/Principal Findings
Using social networks, we assess whether it is possible to obtain accurate data on bee distribution across the UK from photographic records submitted by untrained members of the public, and if these data are in sufficient quantity for ecological studies. We used Flickr and Facebook as social networks and Flickr for the storage of photographs and associated data on date, time and location linked to them. Within six weeks, the number of pictures uploaded to the Flickr BeeID group exceeded 200. Geographic coverage was excellent; the distribution of photographs covered most of the British Isles, from the south coast of England to the Highlands of Scotland. However, only 59% of photographs were properly uploaded according to instructions, with vital information such as ‘tags’ or location information missing from the remainder. Nevertheless, this incorporation of information on location of photographs was much higher than general usage on Flickr (∼13%), indicating the need for dedicated projects to collect spatial ecological data. Furthermore, we found identification of bees is not possible from all photographs, especially those excluding lower abdomen detail. This suggests that giving details regarding specific anatomical features to include on photographs would be useful to maximise success.
Conclusions/Significance
The study demonstrates the power of social network sites to generate public interest in a project and details the advantages of using a group within an existing popular social network site over a traditional (specifically-designed) web-based or paper-based submission process. Some advantages include the ability to network with other individuals or groups with similar interests, and thus increasing the size of the dataset and participation in the project
Self-management support intervention to control cancer pain in the outpatient setting: a randomized controlled trial study protocol
Background: Pain is a prevalent and distressing symptom in patients with cancer, having an enormous impact on functioning and quality of life. Fragmentation of care, inadequate pain communication, and reluctance towards pain medication contribute to difficulties in optimizing outcomes. Integration of patient self-management and professional care by means of healthcare technology provides new opportunities in the outpatient setting.
Methods/Design: This study protocol outlines a two-armed multicenter randomized controlled trial that compares a technology based multicomponent self-management support intervention with care as usual and includes an effect, economic and process evaluation. Patients will be recruited consecutively via the outpatient oncology clinics and inpatient oncology wards of one academic hospital and one regional hospital in the south of the Netherlands. Irrespective of the stage of disease, patients are eligible when they are diagnosed with cancer and have uncontrolled moderate to severe cancer (treatment) related pain defined as NRS ≥ 4 for more than two weeks. Randomization (1:1) will assign patients to either the intervention or control group; patients in the intervention group receive self-management support and patients in the control group receive care as usual. The intervention will be delivered by registered nurses specialized in pain and palliative care. Important components include monitoring of pain, adverse effects and medication as well as graphical feedback, education, and nurse support. Effect measurements for both groups will be carried out with questionnaires at baseline (T0), after 4 weeks (T1) and after 12 weeks (T2). Pain intensity and quality of life are the primary outcomes. Secondary outcomes include self-efficacy, knowledge, anxiety, depression and pain medication use. The final questionnaire contains also questions for the economic evaluation that includes both cost-effectiveness and cost-utility analysis. Data for the process evaluation will be gathered continuously over the study period and focus on recruitment, reach, dose delivered and dose received.
Discussion: The proposed study will provide insight into the effectiveness of the self-management support intervention delivered by nurses to outpatients with uncontrolled cancer pain. Study findings will be used to empower patients and health professionals to improve cancer pain control.
