Measuring airway mucin 2 in patients with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease with bacterial colonization
Sibila and colleagues reported an analysis of the levels of the secreted polymeric mucins MUC2, MUC5AC, and MUC5B in the sputum and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid of patients with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (1). We are writing because they found a very high level of MUC2 in both specimens, whereas most recent studies by others find little or no MUC2 in the airway. Therefore, this report raises the possibility of an error in measurement that could cause confusion in the field
Notes on Exact Multi-Soliton Solutions of Noncommutative Integrable Hierarchies
We study exact multi-soliton solutions of integrable hierarchies on
noncommutative space-times which are represented in terms of quasi-determinants
of Wronski matrices by Etingof, Gelfand and Retakh. We analyze the asymptotic
behavior of the multi-soliton solutions and found that the asymptotic
configurations in soliton scattering process can be all the same as commutative
ones, that is, the configuration of N-soliton solution has N isolated localized
energy densities and the each solitary wave-packet preserves its shape and
velocity in the scattering process. The phase shifts are also the same as
commutative ones. Furthermore noncommutative toroidal Gelfand-Dickey hierarchy
is introduced and the exact multi-soliton solutions are given.Comment: 18 pages, v3: references added, version to appear in JHE
HI in the Outskirts of Nearby Galaxies
The HI in disk galaxies frequently extends beyond the optical image, and can
trace the dark matter there. I briefly highlight the history of high spatial
resolution HI imaging, the contribution it made to the dark matter problem, and
the current tension between several dynamical methods to break the disk-halo
degeneracy. I then turn to the flaring problem, which could in principle probe
the shape of the dark halo. Instead, however, a lot of attention is now devoted
to understanding the role of gas accretion via galactic fountains. The current
cold dark matter theory has problems on galactic scales, such as
the core-cusp problem, which can be addressed with HI observations of dwarf
galaxies. For a similar range in rotation velocities, galaxies of type Sd have
thin disks, while those of type Im are much thicker. After a few comments on
modified Newtonian dynamics and on irregular galaxies, I close with statistics
on the HI extent of galaxies.Comment: 38 pages, 17 figures, invited review, book chapter in "Outskirts of

Requirement for MUC5AC in KRAS-dependent lung carcinogenesis
With more than 150,000 deaths per year in the US alone, lung cancer has the highest number of deaths for any cancer. These poor outcomes reflect a lack of treatment for the most common form of lung cancer, non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC). Lung adenocarcinoma (ADC) is the most prevalent subtype of NSCLC, with the main oncogenic drivers being KRAS and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). Whereas EGFR blockade has led to some success in lung ADC, effective KRAS inhibition is lacking. KRAS-mutant ADCs are characterized by high levels of gel-forming mucin expression, with the highest mucin levels corresponding to worse prognoses. Despite these well-recognized associations, little is known about roles for individual gel-forming mucins in ADC development causatively. We hypothesized that MUC5AC/Muc5ac, a mucin gene known to be commonly expressed in NSCLC, is crucial in KRAS/Kras-driven lung ADC. We found that MUC5AC was a significant determinant of poor prognosis, especially in patients with KRAS-mutant tumors. In addition, by using mice with lung ADC induced chemically with urethane or transgenically by mutant-Kras expression, we observed significantly reduced tumor development in animals lacking Muc5ac compared with controls. Collectively, these results provide strong support for MUC5AC as a potential therapeutic target for lung ADC, a disease with few effective treatments
Regenerative Metaplastic Clones in COPD Lung Drive Inflammation and Fibrosis
The hallmark features of COPD (inflammation, fibrosis, and mucus hypersecretion) are driven by distinct pathogenic progenitors which pre-exist as minor populations in healthy lungs but dominate in the disease state relative to normal lung stem cells. © 2020 Elsevier Inc.Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive condition of chronic bronchitis, small airway obstruction, and emphysema that represents a leading cause of death worldwide. While inflammation, fibrosis, mucus hypersecretion, and metaplastic epithelial lesions are hallmarks of this disease, their origins and dependent relationships remain unclear. Here we apply single-cell cloning technologies to lung tissue of patients with and without COPD. Unlike control lungs, which were dominated by normal distal airway progenitor cells, COPD lungs were inundated by three variant progenitors epigenetically committed to distinct metaplastic lesions. When transplanted to immunodeficient mice, these variant clones induced pathology akin to the mucous and squamous metaplasia, neutrophilic inflammation, and fibrosis seen in COPD. Remarkably, similar variants pre-exist as minor constituents of control and fetal lung and conceivably act in normal processes of immune surveillance. However, these same variants likely catalyze the pathologic and progressive features of COPD when expanded to high numbers
Anomalous accelerations in spacecraft flybys of the Earth
[EN] The flyby anomaly is a persistent riddle in astrodynamics.
Orbital analysis in several flybys of the Earth
since the Galileo spacecraft flyby of the Earth in 1990 have
shown that the asymptotic post-encounter velocity exhibits
a difference with the initial velocity that cannot be attributed
to conventional effects. To elucidate its origin, we have developed
an orbital program for analyzing the trajectory of
the spacecraft in the vicinity of the perigee, including both
the Sun and the MoonÂżs tidal perturbations and the geopotential
zonal, tesseral and sectorial harmonics provided by
the EGM96 model. The magnitude and direction of the
anomalous acceleration acting upon the spacecraft can be
estimated from the orbital determination program by comparing
with the trajectories fitted to telemetry data as provided
by the mission teams. This acceleration amounts to a
fraction of a mm/s2 and decays very fast with altitude. The
possibility of some new physics of gravity in the altitude
range for spacecraft flybys is discussed.Acedo RodrĂguez, L. (2017). Anomalous accelerations in spacecraft flybys of the Earth.
