Anhedonia and Pessimism in Hospitalized Depressed Adolescents
This longitudinal study investigates whether anhedonia and pessimistic attributional style represent a clinical state or a trait in hospitalized depressed adolescents. 81 consecutive adolescent inpatients were screened with the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and the clinician-rated Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) criteria sheet. 51 patients with BDI score ≥10 and/or ≥4 symptoms on MDD criteria sheet were assessed at Time 1 upon admission, with 39 patients (78%) assessed at discharge (Time 2) with the Pleasure Scale for Children and Children's Attributional Style Questionnaire—Revised. Anhedonia and pessimism at admission were associated with BDI scores at admission and discharge as well as number of depressive symptoms and depression severity. MDD diagnosis was associated with anhedonia, but not with pessimism. Pessimism—but not anhedonia—improved significantly by discharge. Results suggest that while some adolescents exhibit enduring anhedonia, pessimistic attributional style appears to be a concomitant feature of an acute depressive state
Using integrated resource management and the public trust doctrine to examine wildlife management practices in northern Labrador: a case study on the George River caribou hunting ban
The people of Labrador, especially the Inuit, rely on their surrounding resources to sustain themselves and their culture. In particular, the Labrador Inuit depended upon the George River Caribou Herd (GRCH), once one of the largest caribou herds in the world, to provide them with a staple food supply, nourishment, materials, and facilitate the intergenerational sharing of knowledge and important social and cultural norms, all of which are critical to life in Arctic and subarctic environments. This woodland caribou population, however, has declined by 99% over much of it range resulting in a hunting ban, and consequently, a cascade of impacts on the Inuit of northern Labrador. Examining and understanding these impacts is the focus of this thesis. As management of wildlife in North America is to follow the Public Trust Doctrine—to manage wildlife in the public trust—this thesis helps bring the information of Inuit impacts into the discussion to help inform future best practices for more accountable, responsible, and locally responsive wildlife management efforts in the North
Observations of M87 and Hydra A at 90 GHz
This paper presents new observations of the AGNs M87 and Hydra A at 90 GHz
made with the MUSTANG bolometer array on the Green Bank Telescope at 8.5"
resolution. A spectral analysis is performed combining this new data and
archival VLA data on these objects at longer wavelengths. This analysis can
detect variations in spectral index and curvature expected from energy losses
in the radiating particles. M87 shows only weak evidence for steepening of the
spectrum along the jet suggesting either re-acceleration of the relativistic
particles in the jet or insufficient losses to affect the spectrum at 90 GHz.
The jets in Hydra A show strong steepening as they move from the nucleus
suggesting unbalanced losses of the higher energy relativistic particles. The
difference between these two sources may be accounted for by the different
lengths over which the jets are observable, 2 kpc for M87 and 45 kpc for Hydra

GMRF Estimation under Topological and Spectral Constraints
International audienceWe investigate the problem of Gaussian Markov random field selection under a non-analytic constraint: the estimated models must be compatible with a fast inference algorithm, namely the Gaussian belief propagation algorithm. To address this question, we introduce the *-IPS framework, based on iterative proportional scaling, which incrementally selects candidate links in a greedy manner. Besides its intrinsic sparsity-inducing ability, this algorithm is flexible enough to incorporate various spectral constraints, like e.g. walk summability, and topological constraints, like short loops avoidance. Experimental tests on various datasets, including traffic data from San Francisco Bay Area, indicate that this approach can deliver, with reasonable computational cost, a broad range of efficient inference models, which are not accessible through penalization with traditional sparsity-inducing norms
PAPPA: Primordial Anisotropy Polarization Pathfinder Array
The Primordial Anisotropy Polarization Pathfinder Array (PAPPA) is a
balloon-based instrument to measure the polarization of the cosmic microwave
background and search for the signal from gravity waves excited during an
inflationary epoch in the early universe. PAPPA will survey a 20 x 20 deg patch
at the North Celestial Pole using 32 pixels in 3 passbands centered at 89, 212,
and 302 GHz. Each pixel uses MEMS switches in a superconducting microstrip
transmission line to combine the phase modulation techniques used in radio
astronomy with the sensitivity of transition-edge superconducting bolometers.
Each switched circuit modulates the incident polarization on a single detector,
allowing nearly instantaneous characterization of the Stokes I, Q, and U
