WR 7a: a V Sagittae or a qWR star?
The star WR 7a, also known as SPH 2, has a spectrum that resembles that of V
Sagittae stars although no O VI emission has been reported. The Temporal
Variance Spectrum - TVS - analysis of our data shows weak but strongly variable
emission of O VI lines which is below the noise level in the intensity
spectrum. Contrary to what is seen in V Sagittae stars, optical photometric
monitoring shows very little, if any, flickering. We found evidence of periodic
variability. The most likely photometric period is P(phot) = 0.227(14) d, while
radial velocities suggest a period of P(spec) = 0.204(13) d. One-day aliases of
these periods can not be ruled out. We call attention to similarities with HD
45166 and DI Cru (= WR 46), where multiple periods are present. They may be
associated to the binary motion or to non-radial oscillations. In contrast to a
previous conclusion by Pereira et al. (1998), we show that WR 7a contains
hydrogen. The spectrum of the primary star seems to be detectable as the N V
4604A absorption line is visible. If so, it means that the wind is optically
thin in the continuum and that it is likely to be a helium main sequence star.
Given the similarity to HD 45166, we suggests that WR 7a may be a qWR - quasi
Wolf-Rayet - star. Its classification is WN4h/CE in the Smith et al. (1996)

The Ring Imaging Cherenkov detector (RICH) of the AMS experiment
The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) experiment to be installed on the
International Space Station (ISS) will be equipped with a proximity focusing
Ring Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) detector for measuring the electric charge and
velocity of the charged cosmic particles. A RICH prototype consisting of 96
photomultiplier units, including a piece of the conical reflector, was built
and its performance evaluated with ion beam data. Preliminary results of the
in-beam tests performed with ion fragments resulting from collisions of a 158
GeV/c/nuc primary beam of Indium ions (CERN SPS) on a Pb target are reported.
The collected data included tests to the final front-end electronics and to
different aerogel radiators. Cherenkov rings for a large range of charged
nuclei and with reflected photons were observed. The data analysis confirms the
design goals. Charge separation up to Fe and velocity resolution of the order
of 0.1% for singly charged particles are obtained.Comment: 29th International Conference on Cosmic Rays (Pune, India
The AMS-RICH velocity and charge reconstruction
The AMS detector, to be installed on the International Space Station,
includes a Ring Imaging Cerenkov detector with two different radiators, silica
aerogel (n=1.05) and sodium fluoride (n=1.334). This detector is designed to
provide very precise measurements of velocity and electric charge in a wide
range of cosmic nuclei energies and atomic numbers. The detector geometry, in
particular the presence of a reflector for acceptance purposes, leads to
complex Cerenkov patterns detected in a pixelized photomultiplier matrix. The
results of different reconstruction methods applied to test beam data as well
as to simulated samples are presented. To ensure nominal performances
throughout the flight, several detector parameters have to be carefully
monitored. The algorithms developed to fulfill these requirements are
presented. The velocity and charge measurements provided by the RICH detector
endow the AMS spectrometer with precise particle identification capabilities in
a wide energy range. The expected performances on light isotope separation are

Hawking radiation and thermodynamics of dynamical black holes in phantom dominated universe
The thermodynamic properties of dark energy-dominated universe in the
presence of a black hole are investigated in the general case of a varying
equation-of-state-parameter . We show that all the thermodynamics
quantities are regular at the phantom divide crossing, and particularly the
temperature and the entropy of the dark fluid are always positive definite. We
also study the accretion process of a phantom fluid by black holes and the
conditions required for the validity of the generalized second law of
thermodynamics. As a results we obtain a strictly negative chemical potential

The RICH detector of the AMS-02 experiment: status and physics prospects
The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS), whose final version AMS-02 is to be
installed on the International Space Station (ISS) for at least 3 years, is a
detector designed to measure charged cosmic ray spectra with energies up to the
TeV region and with high energy photon detection capability up to a few hundred
GeV. It is equipped with several subsystems, one of which is a proximity
focusing RICH detector with a dual radiator (aerogel+NaF) that provides
reliable measurements for particle velocity and charge. The assembly and
testing of the AMS RICH is currently being finished and the full AMS detector
is expected to be ready by the end of 2008. The RICH detector of AMS-02 is

Spitzer IRS Spectral Mapping of the Toomre Sequence: Spatial Variations of PAH, Gas, and Dust Properties in Nearby Major Mergers
We have mapped the key mid-IR diagnostics in eight major merger systems of
the Toomre Sequence (NGC4676, NGC7592, NGC6621, NGC2623, NGC6240, NGC520,
NGC3921, and NGC7252) using the Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph (IRS). With these
maps, we explore the variation of the ionized-gas, PAH, and warm-gas (H_2)
properties across the sequence and within the galaxies. While the global PAH
interband strength and ionized gas flux ratios ([Ne III]/[Ne II]) are similar
to those of normal star forming galaxies, the distribution of the spatially
resolved PAH and fine structure line flux ratios is significant different from
one system to the other. Rather than a constant H_2/PAH flux ratio, we find
that the relation between the H_2 and PAH fluxes is characterized by a power
law with a roughly constant exponent (0.61+/-0.05) over all merger components
and spatial scales. While following the same power law on local scales, three
galaxies have a factor of ten larger integrated (i.e. global) H_2/PAH flux
ratio than the rest of the sample, even larger than what it is in most nearby
AGNs. These findings suggest a common dominant excitation mechanism for H_2
emission over a large range of global H_2/PAH flux ratios in major mergers.
Early merger systems show a different distribution between the cold (CO J=1-0)
and warm (H_2) molecular gas component, which is likely due to the merger
interaction. Strong evidence for buried star formation in the overlap region of
the merging galaxies is found in two merger systems (NGC6621 and NGC7592) as
seen in the PAH, [Ne II], [Ne III], and warm gas line emission, but with no
apparent corresponding CO (J=1-0) emission. Our findings also demonstrate that
the variations of the physical conditions within a merger are much larger than
any systematic trends along the Toomre Sequence.Comment: 35 pages, accepted for publication in ApJ
The Holographic Model of Dark Energy and Thermodynamics of Non-Flat Accelerated Expanding Universe
Motivated by recent results on non-vanishing spatial curvature \cite{curve}
we employ the holographic model of dark energy to investigate the validity of
first and second laws of thermodynamics in non-flat (closed) universe enclosed
by apparent horizon and the event horizon measured from the sphere of
horizon named . We show that for the apparent horizon the first law is
roughly respected for different epochs while the second laws of thermodynamics
is respected while for as the system's IR cut-off first law is broken down
and second law is respected for special range of deceleration parameter. It is
also shown that at late-time universe is equal to and the
thermodynamic laws are hold, when the universe has non-vanishing curvature.
Defining the fluid temperature to be proportional to horizon temperature the
range for coefficient of proportionality is obtained provided that the

The status of chestnut cultivation and utilization in the Canary Islands
Chestnut was introduced to the Canary Islands at the beginning of the 16th century during the time of the Spanish Conquest. It was utilised by the conquerors as a means of claiming property for communal lands. From that time until today, chestnut has been an important crop in the Canary Islands. It is important both as a source of food and timber and has contributed to the subsistence of the population, particularly at times when both resources were scarce. Nowadays it is mainly cultivated on the Islands of Tenerife (around 1300 ha) and La Palma. On other islands, such as Gran Canaria, La Gomera and El Hierro, semi-wild chestnut forests and small plots where farmers collect fruit still exist. Morphological and molecular marker (SSRs) studies have shown a great variability within the local population of chestnut trees in the Canaries. The main use for chestnut is fruit consumption, but it was also utilised in the past as an exchange commodity to obtain fish and other food. The fruit is consumed in many different ways, mainly toasted or roasted, but also cooked in soups, fish or meat dishes and even as an ingredient for the typical Canary Islands’ sweet ‘morcillas’ (a type of sausage). The wood of the tree has been used for furniture, with some shoots being utilised for basket making, and also as cattle food. The trunk of the chestnut has also been used to obtain cork or as a bee hive. Recent efforts to add value to chestnut cultivation in the Canary Islands have included the creation of a Chestnut Farmers Association in Tenerife that commercializes their products under a brand name
Tecnologia e Competências Tecnológicas em Educação a Distancia: Um Estudo Exploratório
Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo geral identificar os elementos componentes das competências tecnológicas em serviços por meio do estudo do uso da tecnologia e seus impactos nas práticas organizacionais. A abordagem de pesquisa incluiu uma etapa qualitativa, baseada em entrevistas com desenvolvedores, usuários e gestores de tecnologia. A principal contribuição da pesquisa foi a identificação das tecnologias utilizadas a partir de uma perspectiva que reúne tanto a perspectiva do usuário quanto do desenvolvedor, onde são analisados os desdobramentos em termos de práticas organizacionais e desempenho no segmento de Educação a Distância (EAD). A análise das entrevistas sugere que ainda há resistência na adoção da tecnologia e o desenvolvimento da competência tecnológica ainda encontra-se nos estágios iniciais. Nos casos em que a tecnologia é utilizada com intensidade, as mudanças nas práticas e no desempenho ocorrem indistintamente, com benefícios claros em termos de rapidez, eficiência e ganhos de escala
