Astrometry of the main satellites of Uranus: 18 years of observations

We determine accurate positions of the main satellites of Uranus: Miranda, Ariel, Umbriel, Titania, and Oberon. Positions of Uranus, as derived from those of these satellites, are also determined. The observational period spans from 1992 to 2011. All runs were made at the Pico dos Dias Observatory, Brazil. We used the software called Platform for Reduction of Astronomical Images Automatically (PRAIA) to minimise (digital coronography) the influence of the scattered light of Uranus on the astrometric measurements and to determine accurate positions of the main satellites. The positions of Uranus were then indirectly determined by computing the mean differences between the observed and ephemeris positions of these satellites. A series of numerical filters was applied to filter out spurious data. These filters are mostly based on the comparison between the positions of Oberon with those of the other satellites and on the offsets as given by the differences between the observed and ephemeris positions of all satellites. We have, for the overall offsets of the five satellites, -29 (+/-63) mas in right ascension and -27 (+/-46) mas in declination. For the overall difference between the offsets of Oberon and those of the other satellites, we have +3 (+/-30) mas in right ascension and -2 (+/-28) mas in declination. Ephemeris positions for the satellites were determined from DE432+ura111. Comparisons using other modern ephemerides for the solar system -INPOP13c- and for the motion of the satellites -NOE-7-2013- were also made. They confirm that the largest contribution to the offsets we find comes from the motion of the barycenter of the Uranus system around the barycenter of the solar system, as given by the planetary ephemerides. Catalogues with the observed positions are provided.Comment: 13 pages, 21 figure

Trabalho científico apresentado sob a forma de Poster no evento 9th ISABS Conference on Forensic Anthropologic Genetics and Mayo Clinicm Bol, Island of Brac, Croacia, 2015During the past few years significant progress has been made in solving technical challenges associated with STR profiling including the ability to analyze degraded DNA and low amounts of DNA. The result of these changes is that useful STR profiles can now be obtained from previously untypeable forensic DNA samples. Analysis of DNA from ancient material represents an important role in molecular anthropology, although there are many limitations concerning low DNA quantity and/or degraded DNA, and/or PCR inhibitors. These factors can make it difficult to decide whether to continue with STR analysis, which STR panel to use and how much DNA to add to PCR reaction. With all these constraints, DNA quantification represents an important tool to decide which method will follow in order to improve workflow and have good results in less time-consuming. The Quantifiler® Trio DNA method provides a quality index (QI) to detect the presence of degraded DNA along with PCR inhibitors. This guide allows the selection of the optimal short tandem repeat (STR) analysis chemistry (autosomal, or miniSTR) and streamlines the workflow while increasing downstream analysis success rates. In order to compare DNA quality from different extraction methods, samples from 46 exhumed Middle Ages individuals were extracted with modified phenol-chloroform method and also PrepFiler Express BTA™ method. DNA was quantified with Quantifiler® Trio DNA Quantification in an Applied Biosystems® 7500 Real-Time PCR System. Results were analyzed and allow us to point Quantifiler® Trio method as an important tool in pre-STR typing methods in ancient samplesN/

Measurements and analysis of the upper critical field Hc2H_{c2} on an underdoped and overdoped La2xSrxCuO4La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 compounds

The upper critical field Hc2H_{c2} is one of the many non conventional properties of high-TcT_c cuprates. It is possible that the Hc2(T)H_{c2}(T) anomalies are due to the presence of inhomogeneities in the local charge carrier density ρ\rho of the CuO2CuO_2 planes. In order to study this point, we have prepared good quality samples of polycrystalline La2xSrxCuO4La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_{4} using the wet-chemical method, which has demonstrated to produce samples with a better cation distribution. In particular, we have studied the temperature dependence of the second critical field, Hc2(T)H_{c2}(T), through the magnetization measurements on two samples with opposite average carrier concentration (ρm=x\rho_m=x) and nearly the same critical temperature, namely ρm=0.08\rho_m = 0.08 (underdoped) and ρm=0.25\rho_m = 0.25 (overdoped). The results close to TcT_c do not follow the usual Ginzburg-Landau theory and are interpreted by a theory which takes into account the influence of the inhomogeneities.Comment: Published versio

Purpose: To assess the sociodemographic profiles, teratogen exposures, and ocular congenital abnormalities in Brazilian patients with Möbius sequence. Method: Forty-four patients were recruited from the Brazilian Möbius Sequence Society. This cross-section comprised 41 patients (age, mean ± standard deviation, 9.0 ± 5.5 years) who fulfilled the inclusion criteria. The parent or caregiver answered a questionnaire regarding sociodemographic data and pregnancy history. Patients underwent ophthalmological assessments. They were subdivided into groups according to misoprostol exposure during pregnancy, and the two groups were compared. Results: Mothers/caregivers reported unplanned pregnancies in 36 (88%) cases. Of these, 19 (53%) used misoprostol during their first trimesters. A stable marital status tended to be more frequent in the unexposed group (P=0.051). Incomplete elementary school education was reported by two (11%) mothers in the exposed group and by three (14%) mothers in the unexposed group (P=0.538). The mothers' gestational exposures to cocaine, marijuana, alcohol, and cigarettes were similar in both groups (P=0.297, P=0.297, P=0.428, and P=0.444, respectively). One (5%) case of Rubella infection during pregnancy was found in the unexposed group. The main malformations in the exposed and unexposed groups were the following: strabismus (72% and 77%, respectively), lack of emotional tearing (47% and 36%, respectively), and lagophthalmos (32% and 41%, respectively). Conclusion: Stable marital statuses tended to be more frequent among mothers that did not take misoprostol during pregnancy. Exposures to other teratogens and the main ocular abnormalities were similar in both groups. Fundação Altino Ventura Department of OphthalmologyHospital de Olhos de Pernambuco Department of OphthalmologyUniversity of Illinois Department of Ophthalmology & Visual ScienceUniversidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP) Department of OphthalmologyAssociação de Assistência à Criança DeficienteSanta Casa de Misericórdia de São Paulo Department of OphthalmologyUniversidade de São Paulo Faculdade de Medicina Departments of Neurology and PediatricsUniversidade de São Paulo Instituto de Biociências Department of BiologyUniversidade de São Paulo Department of OphthalmologyUniversidade Federal de Pernambuco Department of Pediatric SurgeryUniversidade de São Paulo Department of PsychiatryServices Group in Epileptic Child PsychiatryInstituto Cema Department of OphthalmologyUNIFESP, Department of OphthalmologySciEL

Larval anatomy of Dendropsophus decipiens (A. Lutz 1925) (Anura: Hylidae: Dendropsophini) with considerations to larvae of this genus

    Get PDF
The Dendropsophus decipiens clade comprises four species: D. berthalutzae, D. decipiens, D. haddadi, and D. oliveirai. Tadpoles of these species were described, but data on their internal morphology are lacking. We provide the first description of the buccopharyngeal anatomy, chondrocranial morphology, and cranial, hyoid and hyobranchial musculature of the tadpole of D. decipiens. Larvae of D. decipiens are characterized by the absence of lingual papillae, presence of fan-like papilla on the buccal floor, presence of a single-element suprarostral cartilage, presence of a small triangular process at the basis of the processus muscularis, m. levator mandibulae lateralis inserted on the nasal sac, and m. subarcualis rectus II-IV with a single, continuous slip. Tadpoles are likely macrophagous, although not as specialized as those of other species of the genus, suggesting some degree of diversification on the feeding habits within Dendropsophus.Fil: Dias, Pedro H. Insights into the posttranslational structural heterogeneity of thyroglobulin and its role in the development, diagnosis, and management of benign and malignant thyroid diseases

    Get PDF
Thyroglobulin (Tg) is the major glycoprotein produced by the thyroid gland, where it serves as a template for thyroid hormone synthesis and as an intraglandular store of iodine. Measurement of Tg levels in serum is of great practical importance in the follow-up of differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC), a setting in which elevated levels after total thyroidectomy are indicative of residual or recurrent disease. The most recent methods for serum Tg measurement are monoclonal antibody-based and are highly sensitive. However, major challenges remain regarding the interpretation of the results obtained with these immunometric methods, particularly in patients with endogenous antithyroglobulin antibodies or in the presence of heterophile antibodies, which may produce falsely low or high Tg values, respectively. The increased prevalence of antithyroglobulin antibodies in patients with DTC, as compared with the general population, raises the very pertinent possibility that tumor Tg may be more immunogenic. This inference makes sense, as the tumor microenvironment (tumor cells plus normal host cells) is characterized by several changes that could induce posttranslational modification of many proteins, including Tg. Attempts to understand the structure of Tg have been made for several decades, but findings have generally been incomplete due to technical hindrances to analysis of such a large protein (660 kDa). This review article will explore the complex structure of Tg and the potential role of its marked heterogeneity in our understanding of normal thyroid biology and neoplastic processes.FapespCNPqCapesUniv Fed Sao Paulo EPM Unifesp, Escola Paulista Med, Lab Endocrinol Mol & Translac, Div Endocrinol & Metab,Dept Med, Sao Paulo, SP, BrazilUniv Fed Mato Grosso do Sul UFMS, Fac Med Famed, Dept Med, Clin Integrada 5,Endocrinol & Metab, Campo Grande, MS, BrazilUniv Fed Sao Paulo, EPM, Dept Bioquim, Div Mol Biol, Sao Paulo, SP, BrazilUniv Fed Sao Paulo EPM Unifesp, Escola Paulista Med, Lab Endocrinol Mol & Translac, Div Endocrinol & Metab,Dept Med, Sao Paulo, SP, BrazilUniv Fed Sao Paulo, EPM, Dept Bioquim, Div Mol Biol, Sao Paulo, SP, BrazilWeb of Scienc
