    Phytochemical and antioxidant characterization of Hypericum perforatum alcoholic extracts

    The antioxidant potentials of a total ethanolic extract of Hypericum perforatum (TE) and fractions were evaluated and correlated with their phenolic contents. The extracts were fully characterised by HPLC-DAD-MS-MS. Kaempferol 3-rutinoside and rutin-acetyl were identified for the first time in TE extracts. The free radical-scavenging properties of TE (EC50=21 [mu]g dwb/ml) and fractions were studied using DPPH. Fractions containing flavonoids and/or caffeoylquinic acids were found to be the main contributors to the free radical-scavenging activity of the TE. Lipid peroxidation, induced with ascorbate/Fe2+, was significantly reduced in the presence of the TE (EC50=26 [mu]g dwb/ml) and fractions containing flavonoids and/or caffeoylquinic acids. The fraction containing flavonoid aglycones was found to be responsible for a major part of the TE protection against lipid peroxidation. Hypericins and hyperforins made no significant contributions to the antioxidant properties of TE.     Mycobiota and mycotoxins present in finished fish feeds from farms in the Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil

    The aim of the present study was to determine species of the fungal genera Aspergillus, Fusarium, and Penicillium and fumonisin B1 (FB1), aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), and ochratoxin A (OTA) contamination from feed intended for fish farms. A total of 60 samples were sampled from tilapia farms in the Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. The quantitative enumeration of fungi as colony-forming units per gram of feed (CFU/g) was performed using the surface spread method in different culture media. The results were expressed as fungal isolation frequency and relative density. Fungal total counts ranged from <1 × 102 to 4.7 × 104 CFU/g. Fusarium counts were not observed. Among toxigenic genera, Aspergillus (68%) was the most prevalent, followed by Penicillium species (60%). Aspergillus niger aggregate (36%), Aspergillus flavus (35%), and Penicillium citrinum (71%) were the most prevalent species. A high percentage of samples (98%) were contaminated with FB1 levels, while 55% and 3.3% were contaminated with AFB1 and OTA, respectively. The simultaneous occurrence of these mycotoxins emphasizes the need for further research in the area to better assess the risk to the health of fish farms and their implications for the health of consumers of this meat.Fil: Barbosa, Tatiana S..     Transcriptome analysis of Taenia solium cysticerci using Open reading Frame ESTS (ORESTES)

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Human infection by the pork tapeworm <it>Taenia solium </it>affects more than 50 million people worldwide, particularly in underdeveloped and developing countries. Cysticercosis which arises from larval encystation can be life threatening and difficult to treat. Here, we investigate for the first time the transcriptome of the clinically relevant cysticerci larval form.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Using Expressed Sequence Tags (ESTs) produced by the ORESTES method, a total of 1,520 high quality ESTs were generated from 20 ORESTES cDNA mini-libraries and its analysis revealed fragments of genes with promising applications including 51 ESTs matching antigens previously described in other species, as well as 113 sequences representing proteins with potential extracellular localization, with obvious applications for immune-diagnosis or vaccine development.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The set of sequences described here will contribute to deciphering the expression profile of this important parasite and will be informative for the genome assembly and annotation, as well as for studies of intra- and inter-specific sequence variability. Genes of interest for developing new diagnostic and therapeutic tools are described and discussed.</p

    Desenvolvimento de equipamento para avaliação do consumo e da desagregação devido à resistência ao rolamento de pavimentos rodoviários

    Atendendo a que as caraterísticas estruturais e superficiais dos pavimentos rodoviários influenciam o consumo de combustível dos veículos, foi desenvolvido um equipamento que pretende determinar as diferenças de consumo de energia imputáveis à circulação em pavimentos com diferentes caraterísticas superficiais, de forma a avaliar soluções mais sustentáveis que permitam reduzir os custos para os utentes devido ao consumo de combustível. Para além disso, o equipamento permitirá ainda avaliar a resistência à desagregação.     Os pavimentos rodoviários são infraestruturas de grande importância para o desenvolvimento económico de qualquer país. Atualmente, o principal critério utilizado na conceção dessas infraestruturas deixou de ser apenas o seu menor custo, valorizando-se a perspetiva ambiental e procurando determinar todos os impactos de longo prazo (económicos, ambientais ou sociais) deste tipo de investimentos. Nesse sentido, o consumo de combustível dos veículos que circulam nos pavimentos tem um peso significativo em termos económicos e ambientais, justificando a procura de soluções que permitam reduzir esse consumo de forma a garantir um desenvolvimento mais sustentável. No que diz respeito às características dos pavimentos, um dos fatores que mais influencia o consumo dos veículos é a resistência ao rolamento. Tendo em conta que as características dos pavimentos, em especial as superficiais, têm uma influência significativa nessa propriedade, com o presente trabalho pretendeu desenvolver-se uma metodologia de avaliação da resistência ao rolamento de misturas betuminosas com diferentes características superficiais. Assim, é possível avaliar que misturas ou características superficiais permitem contribuir para uma redução do consumo de combustível e das emissões de gases resultantes da sua queima ao longo do ciclo de vida de um pavimento. A obtenção de resultados do consumo energético necessário para circular sobre diferentes misturas betuminosas foi conseguida através do desenvolvimento de um protótipo. O consumo energético do movimento circular das rodas, equipadas com pneus convencionais de veículos ligeiros, foi medido para diferentes superfícies e a sua utilização para a avaliação da sustentabilidade das misturas estudadas é analisada no presente artigoFEDER através do Programa Operacional de Competitividade - COMPETE e por fundos nacionais através da FCT - Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia - no âmbito do Projeto PLASTIROADS - PTDC/ECM/119179/201

    Superposition effect and clan structure in forward-backward multiplicity correlations

    The main purpose of this paper is to discuss the link between forward-backward multiplicity correlations properties and the shape of the corresponding final charged particle multiplicity distribution in various classes of events in different collisions. It is shown that the same mechanism which explains the shoulder effect and the H_n vs. n oscillations in charged particle multiplicity distributions, i.e., the weighted superposition of different classes of events with negative binomial properties, reproduces within experimental errors also the forward-backward multiplicity correlation strength in e+e- annihilation at LEP energy and allows interesting predictions for pp collisions in the TeV energy region, to be tested at LHC, for instance with the ALICE detector. We limit ourselves at present to study substructures properties in hadron-hadron collisions and e+e- annihilation; they are examined as ancillary examples in the conviction that their understanding might be relevant also in other more complex cases.Comment: 16 page

    Standalone vertex finding in the ATLAS muon spectrometer

    A dedicated reconstruction algorithm to find decay vertices in the ATLAS muon spectrometer is presented. The algorithm searches the region just upstream of or inside the muon spectrometer volume for multi-particle vertices that originate from the decay of particles with long decay paths. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated using both a sample of simulated Higgs boson events, in which the Higgs boson decays to long-lived neutral particles that in turn decay to bbar b final states, and pp collision data at √s = 7 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC during 2011

    Quercetin-biapigenin nanoparticles are effective to penetrate the blood–brain barrier

    Search for efficient therapeutic agents for central nervous system (CNS) disorders has been extensive. Nevertheless, blood-brain barrier (BBB) is an obstacle that prevents the majority of compounds to act in these diseases. It is, thus, of extreme relevance the BBB overcome, in order to deliver a drugs therapeutically active concentration to the action site, with the least losses and interaction with other organs, tissues, or cells. The present study aimed to investigate the potential protective effect of quercetin-biapigenin encapsulated into poly(Ɛ-polycaprolactone) (PCL) nanoparticles against t-BOOH-induced oxidative stress in several brain cell lines, as well as evaluate the permeability of those active molecules through an in vitro BBB model. The three cell lines under study (BV-2, hcmec/D3, and U87) presented different reactions to t-BOOH. In general, quercetin-biapigenin PCL-loaded nanoparticles were able to minimize compound toxicity they convey, regardless the cell line. Quercetin-biapigenin PCL-loaded nanoparticles (Papp of approximately 80 × 10-6 cm/s) revealed to be more permeable than free compounds (Papp of approximately 50 × 10-6 cm/s). As of our knowledge, this is the first report of quercetin-biapigenin PCL-loaded nanoparticle activity in brain cells.     Measurement of inclusive two-particle angular correlations in pp collisions with the ATLAS detector at the LHC

    We present a measurement of two-particle angular correlations in proton- proton collisions at s√=900 GeV and 7 TeV. The collision events were collected during 2009 and 2010 with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider using a single-arm minimum bias trigger. Correlations are measured for charged particles produced in the kinematic range of transverse momentum p T  > 100 MeV and pseudorapidity |η| < 2.5. A complex structure in pseudorapidity and azimuth is observed at both collision energies. Results are compared to pythia 8 and herwig++ as well as to the AMBT2B, DW and Perugia 2011 tunes of pythia 6. The data are not satisfactorily described by any of these models

    Inclusive search for same-sign dilepton signatures in pp collisions at root s=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    An inclusive search is presented for new physics in events with two isolated leptons (e or mu) having the same electric charge. The data are selected from events collected from p p collisions at root s = 7 TeV by the ATLAS detector and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 34 pb(-1). The spectra in dilepton invariant mass, missing transverse momentum and jet multiplicity are presented and compared to Standard Model predictions. In this event sample, no evidence is found for contributions beyond those of the Standard Model. Limits are set on the cross-section in a fiducial region for new sources of same-sign high-mass dilepton events in the ee, e mu and mu mu channels. Four models predicting same-sign dilepton signals are constrained: two descriptions of Majorana neutrinos, a cascade topology similar to supersymmetry or universal extra dimensions, and fourth generation d-type quarks. Assuming a new physics scale of 1 TeV, Majorana neutrinos produced by an effective operator V with masses below 460 GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level. A lower limit of 290 GeV is set at 95% confidence level on the mass of fourth generation d-type quarks
