Anti-transpirant effects on vine physiology, berry and wine composition of cv. Aglianico (Vitis vinifera L.) Grown in South Italy
In viticulture, global warming requires reconsideration of current production models. At the base of this need there are some emerging phenomena: modification of phenological phases; acceleration of the maturation process of grapes, with significant increases in the concentration of sugar musts; decoupling between technological grape maturity and phenolic maturity. The aim of our study was to evaluate the effect of a natural anti-transpirant on grapevine physiology, berry, and wine composition of Aglianico cultivar. For two years, Aglianico vines were treated at veraison with the anti-transpirant Vapor Gard and compared with a control sprayed with only water. A bunch thinning was also applied to both treatments. The effectiveness of Vapor Gard were assessed through measurements of net photosynthesis and transpiration and analyzing the vegetative, productive and qualitative parameters. The results demonstrate that the application of antitranspirant reduced assimilation and transpiration rate, stomatal conductance, berry sugar accumulation, and wine alcohol content. No significant differences between treatments were observed for other berry and wine compositional parameters. This method may be a useful tool to reduce berry sugar content and to produce wines with a lower alcohol content
Methodological problems in solvency assessment of an insurance company
The recent wide development and changes in insurance markets highlighted the necessity to map out the solvency analysis in a more complete framework. The approach we present in the paper comes up with an integrated analysis of the risk profile of an insurance business, taking into account the actual European directives about solvency assessment. The aim of the paper is to construct a methodology apt to incorporate properly the effect of the risk sources in calculating mathematical provisions related to a portfolio of insurance policies.Life insurance, financial risk, demographic risk, capital adequacy, reserves, conditional random processes

Pension schemes versus real estate
The demographic, economic and social changes that have characterized the last decades, and the dramatic financial crisis that has taken place since 2008, have led to a demand for structural changes in the pension sector and a growing interest in individual pension products. Hence the need, for most elderly people, to liquidate their fixed assets, which are usually the homes in which they live. This highlights products such as reverse mortgages and domestic reversibility plans. Within this context, we propose a contractual scheme where an immediate life annuity is obtained by paying a single-premium in the form of real estate rights (RERs), for example by transferring to an insurer the property title of a house or a similar realty, while keeping its usufruct or a restricted bundle of rights. The level of the installments depends on the fair value of the transferred RER at the contract’s issue, the life expectancy of the insured and the expected growth rate of the real estate market value. The contract design is developed by considering the control of the financial risk inherent in the contract itself, because of the prospective changes in the value of the RERs, and the level of the insurer’s leverage. Finally, we provide some numerical evidence of the proposed contractual structure, in order to compare the level of the installments according to the house return forecasts in different European countries
Sensitivity study of dynamics variability for mild-carbon steel structures affected by corrosion
Background: Corrosion propagation mainly occurs due to environmental conditions and to the absence of adequate maintenance. The corrosion propagation affects the structural performances of slender and thin structures, in particular in the case of structure very sensitive to the wind action and its dynamical phenomena, because commonly they are designed with a precise optimization of the stiffness/mass ratio. The static and dynamic wind action represent an immediate safety hazard in the case of structural stiffness and mass reduction due to the corrosion depth. Objective: This paper discusses the dynamics behavior variability due to the corrosion depth propagation for two significant examples of slender and thin structure (i.e. tower and truss roof). Methods: The structures assumed as case of study are made of mild carbon. The corrosion depth variability was estimated based on literature references. The structural natural frequencies and modal shapes are assumed as significant magnitudes to discuss the effect of the corrosion on the structural elements. Results: Results have shown that the corrosion depth gives a significant reduction of frequencies and modification of modal shapes. Conclusion: Results have shown that the corrosion depth affect the structural behavior long before a structural collapse. It suggests that a monitoring must be done to estimate the structure reliability for the Serviceability limit state under Characteristic design loads
Effectiveness of clozapine and olanzapine: a comparison in severe, psychotically ill patients
The aim of our study was to evaluate the effectivenessof clozapine and olanzapine in the treatment of schizophrenicpatients. Either clozapine or olanzapine signifcantly ameliorated positive symptoms, but only clozapine was effective in reducinganxiety and hallucinations, while olanzapine was more effective in reducing negative symptoms, such as mannerism and posturing, blunted affect and emotional withdrawal. Olanzapine-treated patients obtained significantly higher GAF scores than clozapine-treated patients and more frequently participated in rehabilitative programmes. In conclusio, olanzapine therapy has surprisingly been shown to be more effective than clozapine in improving social and working skills
Somatic embryogenesis of Vitis vinifera L. (cv. Sugraone) from stigma and style culture
Somatic embryo and plant regeneration were induced from stigma and style culture of grapevine (Vitis vinifera L. cv. Sugraone). To obtain somatic embryogenesis, explants were cultured on Nitsch and Nitsch basal medium (NN) supplemented with 88 mM sucrose and various combinations of the auxin β-naphthoxyacetic acid (NOA, 0-10 μM) and the cytokinin 6-benzylaminopurine (BA, 0-9 μM). Growth regulators (BA and NOA) in the culture medium were essential for induction of somatic embryogenesis since explants incubated on hormone-free medium never regenerated somatic embryos. Usually, the regenerated somatic embryos become visible as small white globular structures on the surface of the callus 3-4 months after culture initiation. The best embryogenic response (27 %) was obtained when stigma and style explants were cultured on NN medium supplemented with 5 μM NOA and 9 μM BA. Somatic embryos developed into plantlets when transferred to a hormone-free semisolid NN medium. 35 % of primary somatic embryos showed secondary embryogenesis
A circular dichroism study of the protective role of polyphosphoesters polymer chains in polyphosphoester‐myoglobin conjugates
Protein-polymer conjugates are a blooming class of hybrid systems with high
biomedical potential. Despite a plethora of papers on their biomedical
properties, the physical–chemical characterization of many protein-polymer
conjugates is missing. Here, we evaluated the thermal stability of a set of
fully-degradable polyphosphoester-protein conjugates by variable temperature
circular dichroism, a common but powerful technique. We extensively describe
their thermodynamic stability in different environments (in physiological
buffer or in presence of chemical denaturants, e.g., acid or urea), highlighting
the protective role of the polymer in preserving the protein from denaturation.
For the first time, we propose a simple but effective protocol to achieve useful
information on these systems in vitro, useful to screen new samples in their
early stages
Evaluation of graft success of grapevine after incubation room by means of thermographic, electrical and mechanical techniques
Grafting is an important technique for getting good yields in plant multiplication. Understanding the success of the graft after the incubation stage is important to the evaluation of the suitable grafting for the open field (nursery). Successful grafting in vines requires the development of a functional vascular system between the scion and the rootstock. The graft compatibility and its augmentation depend upon various natural factors like environment, soil conditions and protective measures. The present study examines the capability of thermographic, mechanical and electrical techniques to assess the graft quality and success after the incubation stage. The trial was carried out at Vivai Mannone, (Petrosino, Western Sicily, 37\uc2\ub042'26.28''N - 12\uc2\ub029'09.57''E). After the different tests, various grafting combinations were planted in the nursery and followed for the vegetative season. Before the evaluation procedure was performed graft unions have been subjected to a moderate heating from ambient temperature, then the thermal transient toward ambient temperature was monitored by means of a thermal imaging camera. As far as the electrical testing procedure was concerned, a sinusoidal voltage was applied through the grafts-cuttings, and the voltage attenuation at different points at increasing distances from the source was measured by an oscilloscope. The mechanical strength of the graft undergoing a controlled rate flexural loading was monitored by a PC remote controlled digital dynamometer. Experimental results show that we were able to distinguish the successful grafting only with the thermographic test. Moreover, this technique was the only non-destructive test from which it was possible to derive quantitative parameters, useful to provide successful nursery forecast. Engraftment results detected at the nursery showed a 15% error in forecast based on the proposed thermal image method, which is a satisfactory value for a feasibility study
