Confining strings in the Abelian-projected SU(3)-gluodynamics II. 4D-case with θ\theta-term

    Get PDF
The generalization of 4D confining string theory to the SU(3)-inspired case is derived. It describes string representation of the Wilson loop in the SU(3)-analogue of compact QED extended by the θ\theta-term. It is shown that although the obtained theory of confining strings differs from that of compact QED, their low-energy limits have the same functional form. This fact leads to the appearance of the string θ\theta-term in the low-energy limit of the SU(3)-inspired confining string theory. In particular, it is shown that in the extreme strong coupling regime, the crumpling of string world sheets could disappear owing to the string θ\theta-term at θ=π/12\theta=\pi/12. Finally, some characteristic features of the SU(N)-case are pointed out.Comment: 8 pages, LaTeX2e, no figures, to appear in Europhys. Letter

String breaking in QCD: dual superconductor vs. stochastic vacuum model

    Get PDF
Effects of dispersion of the chromoelectric field of the flux tube on the string-breaking distance are studied. The leading-order correction is shown to slightly diminish the result following from the Schwinger formula. Instead, accounting for corrections of all orders might result, at certain values of the Landau-Ginzburg parameter, in an increase of the string-breaking distance up to one order of magnitude. An alternative formula for this distance is obtained when produced pairs are treated as holes in a confining pellicle, which spans over the contour of an external quark-antiquark pair. Generalizations of the obtained results to the cases of small temperatures, as well as temperatures close to the critical one are also discussed.Comment: 21 pages, no figures, uses JHEP3.cl

Condensation of vortices and disorder parameter in 3d Heisenberg model

The 3d Heisenberg model is studied from a dual point of view. It is shown that the disordered phase corresponds to condensation of vortices in the vacuum, and the critical indices are computed from the corresponding disorder parameter.Comment: LATTICE98(spin

Expected sensitivity of ARGO-YBJ to detect point gamma-ray sources

ARGO-YBJ is a full coverage air shower detector currently under construction at the Yangbajing Laboratory (4300 m a.s.l., Tibet, China). First data obtained with a subset of the apparatus will be available in summer 2003 while the full detector operation is expected in 2005. One of the main aims of ARGO-YBJ is the observation of gamma-ray sources, at an energy threshold of a few hundreds GeV. In this paper we present the expected sensitivity to detect point gamma ray sources, with particular attention to the Crab Nebula. According to our simulations a Crab-like signal could be detected in one year of operation with a statistical significance of 10 standard deviations, without any gamma/hadron discrimination.Comment: 4 pages, 2 Postscript figure

    Natural statistics for spectral samples

    Get PDF
Spectral sampling is associated with the group of unitary transformations acting on matrices in much the same way that simple random sampling is associated with the symmetric group acting on vectors. This parallel extends to symmetric functions, k-statistics and polykays. We construct spectral k-statistics as unbiased estimators of cumulants of trace powers of a suitable random matrix. Moreover we define normalized spectral polykays in such a way that when the sampling is from an infinite population they return products of free cumulants.Comment: Published in at http://dx.doi.org/10.1214/13-AOS1107 the Annals of Statistics (http://www.imstat.org/aos/) by the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (http://www.imstat.org

    Behavioural patterns in social networks

    Get PDF
In this paper, we focus on the analysis of individual decision making for the formation of social networks, using experimentally generated data. We first analyse the determinants of the individual demand for links under the assumption of agents' static expectations. The results of this exercise subsequently allow us to identify patterns of behaviour that can be subsumed in three strategies of link formation: 1) reciprocator strategy - players propose links to those from whom they have received link proposals in the previous round; 2) myopic best response strategy - players aim to profit from maximisation; 3) opportunistic strategy - players reciprocate link proposals to those who have the largest number of connections. We find that these strategies explain approximately 76% of the observed choices. We finally estimate a mixture model to highlight the proportion of the population who adopt each of these strategies
