The relationship between buildings and health: A systematic review
© 2018 The Author(s). Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of Faculty of 268 Public Health. All rights reserved. Background The built environment exerts one of the strongest directly measurable effects on physical and mental health, yet the evidence base underpinning the design of healthy urban planning is not fully developed. Method This study provides a systematic review of quantitative studies assessing the impact of buildings on health. In total, 7127 studies were identified from a structured search of eight databases combined with manual searching for grey literature. Only quantitative studies conducted between January 2000 and November 2016 were eligible for inclusion. Studies were assessed using the quality assessment tool for quantitative studies. Results In total, 39 studies were included in this review. Findings showed consistently that housing refurbishment and modifications, provision of adequate heating, improvements to ventilation and water supply were associated with improved respiratory outcomes, quality of life and mental health. Prioritization of housing for vulnerable groups led to improved wellbeing. However, the quality of the underpinning evidence and lack of methodological rigour in most of the studies makes it difficult to draw causal links. Conclusion This review identified evidence to demonstrate the strong association between certain features of housing and wellbeing such as adequate heating and ventilation. Our findings highlight the need for strengthening of the evidence base in order for meaningful conclusions to be drawn
A UK practitioner view of domestic energy performance measurement
There is a growing body of evidence concerning the energy efficiency performance of domestic buildings in the UK, driven by policy-based agenda, such as the need for zero carbon dioxide homes by 2016 for new build homes, and Green Deal and energy company obligation for sustainable refurbishment. While there have been a number of studies funded and results presented in this area, little work has been done to understand the drivers, practices and issues of data collection and analysis. There are a number of major building performance evaluation (BPE) studies in the UK, yet behind many of these research projects are practical issues of data loss, experimental error, data analysis variances and resident issues that are common when studies move from the actual to the living lab. In this paper the issues of domestic energy are addressed by leading BPE practitioners in the UK. They identify issues of client demands, technical failure, costs and implementation. The work provides insights of both academic and industry-based practitioners and considers not only the practicalities of building performance studies, but also implications for these types of studies in the future

Overheating in vulnerable and non-vulnerable households
Temperatures of living rooms, kitchens and bedrooms of 55 dwellings in Exeter (UK) were monitored during the summers of 2014 and 2015. Additionally, radiator temperatures and CO2 levels were also monitored. Occupant thermal comfort was investigated through a paper-based questionnaires at the end of summer 2014 and telephone interviews during summer 2015
Campus of the Future Project FAIR Datasets
The Campus of the Future project proposes to develop evidence-based decision-making strategies to match supply and demand for the future campus. The two datasets presented in this folder are the outputs of the Campus of the Future project and they provide decision-makers and researchers with the most relevant and up-to-date campus management data: (1) University building data from Archdaily; (2) Corona-related campus news from Flipboard. These FAIR datasets also encourage campus decision-makers to provide open data on campus buildings in the future years, which will support decision-makers of individual universities with management information in making the right decisions for their future campus. Please check the “README [.txt]” and “campus.of.the.future.project.FAIR.datasets_codebook [.pdf]” files for more information. </p
