    Challenges of using software size in agile software development: A systematic literature review

Size is used for a variety of purposes, such as benchmarking, normalization, and portfolio measurement, and it is frequently considered as the sole input of estimation. Estimations can be produced for various reasons; e.g., to predict effort, cost and duration of software development projects. There are different types of software size measures. Particularly in projects where agile methodologies are adopted, measurement becomes a significant challenge as it is perceived as a non-value-added task and records of tasks such as requirements identification are not always consistent. The difficulties of applying traditional size measurement techniques in agile contexts, however, do not diminish the need, and new methods and techniques are introduced to improve the manageability of the agile projects. In this paper, we discuss estimation and measurement approaches in relation with ―software size in agile contexts. Based on this review, we present the perceptions of software size and related challenges, such as misinterpretation of size, difficulties in implementation, and acceptability of the measurement processes. We anticipate that providing a baseline for the state of software size measures in agile contexts and presenting related challenges, particularly in terms of its acceptability by practitioners can shed light on the development of new techniques

    Implementation of an OFDM based underwater acoustic modem

UWA communication became more popular as there has been a growing interest in transmitting real-time data, such as video and sonar images. There are many applications where these transmissions are used. These applications are underwater wireless sensor networks(UWSN) and unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) for military and scientific purposes. Therefore, building an efficient UWA communication system which has a high data rate can improve these applications’ performance signifi- cantly. Currently, many underwater communication systems use single carrier modulation which have limited data rate due to complexity of their receivers, as frequency selectivity of the channel increases when the symbol rate increases, so we preferred to use multicarrier modulation in UWA communication in order to increase data rate of our system. In this thesis, we considered a system that uses zero-padded (ZP) OFDM modulation. Based on ZP-OFDM, we used a receiver model that performs pilot-tone based channel estimation, carrier frequency offset compensation based on least squares (LS) fitting error or null subcarriers if they occur and data demodulation for each OFDM block individually. We used MATLAB environment for implementing our system. The MATLAB scripts generate a data burst that contains OFDM blocks, and then it is transmitted to the hardware from a laptop by using a Data Acquisition (DAQ) Card. At the other side of the system, the receiver laptop gets the data by using a DAQ Card. As the data is received, MATLAB scripts are used for demodulating it. As we built our system, we performed underwater experiments at Bilkent Lake Facility to investigate its performance in a real UWA channel. In our test, a data rate of 13.92 kbps has been achieved with quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) modulation while the bit-error-rate (BER) was less then 9x10−2 without using any coding.Demirörs, EmrecanM.S

    Assessing Software Processes over a New Generic Software Process Assessment Tool

    Performing process improvement to deliver qualified products with the expected cost on time has been a requirement for organizations targeting to be successful in the software market. Software organizations usually perform process improvement based on well-known process assessment frameworks such as CMMI and ISO/IEC 15504. A number of derivatives of CMMI and ISO/IEC 15504 have been developed and they are being updated. As a result of this, the software process assessment tool based on them needs to be updated. Process assessment requires judgment and there is an unavoidable manual work. However, there are also opportunities for assessment automation. Therefore, there is a need for a generic software process assessment tool to define process assessment models and facilitate assessment. The existing tools do not meet the expected features of a software process assessment tool completely, as they have generally been developed for single process assessment models. In this study, we present GSPA, a generic software process assessment tool, which has been developed to support all structured process assessment models with its generic framework, facilitate assessment, support parallel assessment and present the reports in a well-structured way to the assessors.     Manufacturing Large-scale Materials with Structural Color

    Living organisms frequently use structural color for coloration as an alternative mechanism to chemical pigmentation. Recently there has been a growing interest to translate structural color into synthetic materials as a more durable and less hazardous alternative to conventional pigments. Efforts to fabricate structurally colored materials take place in different fronts, from 3D printing to spray-coating and roll-to-roll casting. Stability, performance, and quality of the color, the environmental impact of the materials or their manufacturing methods are some of the heavily researched topics we discuss. First, we highlight recent examples of large-scale manufacturing technologies to fabricate structurally colored objects. Second, we discuss the current challenges to be tackled to create perfect appearances which aim at the full color gamut while caring for environmental concerns. Finally, we discuss possible scenarios that could be followed in order to involve other manufacturing methods for creating structurally colored objects

    Cross-factor analysis of software modeling practices versus practitioner demographics in the embedded software industry

    Software-intensive embedded systems have evolved to be essential tools of our lives. To cope with growing complexities in embedded software industry, software modeling and model-driven engineering (MDE) have become popular for design, development and testing of these systems. However, the usage of models in embedded software industry and the relevant practices usually vary since challenges, requirements and purposes differ among systems as well as among sectors. To understand the state-of-the-practice of software modeling in embedded systems industry, we designed and conducted a world-wide survey, which accepted 627 responses from 27 different countries. The goal of this paper is to present our work built on this survey to better understand and characterize the cross-factor analysis of software modeling versus practitioner demographics, e.g., degree of using software modeling versus target sectors of the products
