Navigating the landscape of Postpartum Depression: a comprehensive review
Introduction and purpose:
The joyous occasion of childbirth is often overshadowed by the prevalence of postpartum depression (PPD), a complex mental health condition affecting mothers globally. This paper reviews the current state of knowledge on PPD, exploring its frequency, risk factors, pathogenesis, symptoms, and impact on maternal and child health.
Description of the State of Knowledge:
Recent studies indicate an alarming increase in PPD rates, with notable racial and socioeconomic disparities. Symptoms of PPD, ranging from mild to severe include mood disturbances, cognitive impairments, and self-harm ideation. The repercussions extend beyond the postpartum period, affecting long-term child development, breastfeeding practices, and the mother-infant bond. Advancements in screening tools, particularly the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), have facilitated early detection. However, creating an environment conducive to open communication about mental health remains a significant challenge. Interventions for PPD include psychotherapeutic approaches, pharmacological interventions, and complementary therapies. Brexanolone, the first FDA-approved drug for PPD, represents a significant breakthrough. Community-based and peer support programs, alongside a multidisciplinary approach involving healthcare professionals and support networks, have shown promise in alleviating PPD symptoms.
Summary:
In conclusion, PPD remains a substantial public health concern. Increased awareness of its multifaceted nature has led to improved screening, diagnosis, and intervention strategies. Ongoing dialogue, supportive environments, and refined treatments are essential for enhancing the well-being of both mothers and their infants in the postpartum period
The growing importance of high-efficiency ultrasound in diagnosis and management of dermatological diseases
Introduction: High-frequency ultrasonography (HF-USG) uses frequency above 20 MHz, which allows to visualize skin layers and measure their thickness. As it is simple, non-invasive and reliable technique, it has become a relevant tool in the field of dermatology along with other methods like for example dermoscopy. It can be used not only for the evaluation, diagnosis and management of various skin diseases, but also for analysis of the healthy skin structure
Aim of the study: The aim of this review is to present information on the use of high-efficiency USG and its application in dermatology.
Materials and methods: The literature available in the PubMed and Google Scholar data bases was reviewed, using the following keywords: "dermatologic ultrasound", "skin ultrasound, "HFUS dermatology".
Conclusions: HFUS has given many opportunities in dermatology. Although ultrasound is not a new thing and it has been used in the field of dermatology for more than four decades, its significance has evolved with improvements in technology. We already have some pathognomonic sonographic features for skin lesions, but this amount will definitely increase due to the growing popularity of HFUS devices in clinical practice
Cholelithiasis - current knowledge about one of the most common diseases of the digestive system
Introduction: Cholelithiasis is one of the most common diseases of the digestive system and thus the most common cause of hospitalization in gastroenterology. According to the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL), it affects up to 20% of the European population and about 10-20% of the Polish population, and the number of patients is constantly increasing. This may be related to the growing problem of obesity and the widespread use of ultrasonography. The disease is also becoming more common in children and adolescents. The costs of gallstone diagnosis and treatment cause a huge financial burden on the health care system. As such, it is a public health issue that deserves more attention.
Aim of the study: The aim of this review is to present current and the most important information about cholelithiasis – to determine the association between prevention and cholelithiasis, describe diagnosis, treatment and complications.
Materials and methods: The review was based on the analysis of materials collected in the „Pubmed” database, Google Scholar, European Society for the Study of the Liver guidelines (EASL), books and other scientific articles. The search was performer using the key words: „cholelithiasis”, „cholelithiasis treatment”, „cholelithiasis diet”, „gallstone disease”,” gallstones”, „cholelithiasis etiology”, „Biliary Colic”
Summary: Cholelithiasis is currently the most common disease of the bile ducts. The increasing incidence of patients with gallstones should contribute to the increased interest in this disease
Diogenes syndrome - causes and treatment of pathological hoarding and self neglect
Introduction
Diogenes syndrome is a behavioral disorder typically described in physically neglected people living in extreme poverty, unsanitary conditions and self-imposed isolation, who often refuse outside help and tend to accumulate unusual objects. This syndrome is gaining increasing attention in the world of neurology and psychiatry.
The aim of the study
To summarize current knowledge on the causes of Diogenes syndrome, its characteristics and treatment.
Material and methods
The search of the Pubmed and Google Scholar database was carried out using keywords, in order to find the latest publications.
Summary
Diogenes syndrome is a complex disease that will affect an increasing number of elderly people as the population ages. There is a lack of extensive research to create clear diagnostic criteria, classification and treatment for Diogenes syndrome. The creation of a disease entity would enable earlier diagnosis and help patients
Zastosowanie antagonistów receptora dla aldosteronu w leczeniu niewydolności serca
Antagoniści receptora dla aldosteronu należą do leków moczopędnych
o niewielkiej sile działania diuretycznego, a działają
poprzez hamowanie ostatniego ogniwa układu renina-angiotensyna-aldosteron.
Dzięki nowym badaniom klinicznym wskazania do stosowania antagonistów aldosteronu rozszerzono i obecnie można do nich zaliczyć
niewydolność serca w klasach III i IV - nie ze względu na
działanie diuretyczne, ale ze względu na hamowanie niekorzystnego
remodelingu niewydolnego serca i redukcję śmiertelności
Cannabidiol: main mechanisms of action and therapeutic targets
Introduction: Over the past few years, multiple publications have proven many beneficial properties associated with CBD. Currently, its use in the treatment of inflammatory and autoimmune diseases is suggested. Also, very often the use of CBD in the treatment of anxiety disorders, schizophrenia and depression, as well as Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease is the subject of scientific research. CBD could be also used in treatment of the chronic pain in cancer patients or in people with diabetic complications. So far, it has been proven that CBD has anti-inflammatory, anticonvulsant, antioxidant, anti-arthritic, procognitive, cardio- and neuroprotective effects. The potential of cannabidiol in the prevention and treatment of many diseases is seen in its complex and multidirectional mechanisms of action. CBD has low affinity for cannabinoid receptors and acts as an inverse agonist of type 2 cannabinoid receptors (CB2-R). Additionally, CBD exerts its effects through many other molecular targets.
Aim of the study: The aim of this review is to present mechanisms of action of cannabidiol and its possible therapeutic targets.
Materials and methods: The literature available in the PubMed and Google Scholar data bases was reviewed, using the following keywords: "cannabidiol", "CBD", "CBD's mechanism of action", "CBD therapeutic targets", "endocannabinoid system".
Conclusions: Cannabidiol is a promising candidate in the treatment of many common diseases. Furthermore, research is needed to confirm its beneficial effects and turn it into an effective drug that supports therapy with other drugs
Combined Anticancer Therapy for Prostate Cancer - Literature Review
Prostate cancers represent a significant health problem, and their etiology is complex and multifaceted. It is estimated that in 2018, 1.3 million new cases and 359,000 deaths due to prostate cancer were diagnosed. They constitute the second most common group of cancers and the fifth most common cause of cancer-related deaths in men worldwide. The present study encompasses a literature review aimed at conducting an analysis of the potential of combined anticancer therapy as a prospective method for enhancing treatment efficacy, minimizing side effects, and improving long-term survival outcomes for prostate cancer patients. Combinations of compounds such as sunitinib with docetaxel, carboplatin with paclitaxel, estramustine or flutamide with luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone agonists, as well as docetaxel in conjunction with dexamethasone and octreotide, have demonstrated synergistic effects and an augmentation of therapeutic effectiveness. It is noteworthy to emphasize the potential enhancement of docetaxel's anticancer activity with concurrent administration of dexamethasone and octreotide, as well as combined therapy involving docetaxel, prednisone, and curcumin
