    Allogeneic Adipose-Derived Mesenchymal Stromal Cells Ameliorate Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis by Regulating Self-Reactive T Cell Responses and Dendritic Cell Function

    Multipotent mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) have emerged as a promising therapy for autoimmune diseases, including multiple sclerosis (MS). Administration of MSCs to MS patients has proven safe with signs of immunomodulation but their therapeutic efficacy remains low. The aim of the current study has been to further characterize the immunomodulatory mechanisms of adipose tissue-derived MSCs (ASCs) in vitro and in vivo using the EAE model of chronic brain inflammation in mice. We found that murine ASCs (mASCs) suppress T cell proliferation in vitro via inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase- (COX-) 1/2 activities. mASCs also prevented the lipopolysaccharide- (LPS-) induced maturation of dendritic cells (DCs) in vitro. The addition of the COX-1/2 inhibitor indomethacin, but not the iNOS inhibitor L-NAME, reversed the block in DC maturation implicating prostaglandin (PG) E2 in this process. In vivo, early administration of murine and human ASCs (hASCs) ameliorated myelin oligodendrocyte protein- (MOG35-55-) induced EAE in C57Bl/6 mice. Mechanistic studies showed that mASCs suppressed the function of autoantigen-specific T cells and also decreased the frequency of activated (CD11c+ and CD11c+TNF-α+) DCs in draining lymph nodes (DLNs).     Heritage, Tourism and Local Development in Peripheral Rural Spaces: Mértola (Baixo Alentejo, Portugal)

    In the context of multiple repurposing of rural spaces, tourism represents a path for development, with the potential to revitalize these areas. The conservation and restoration of heritage, and its promotion through tourism, can become an opportunity for local development, in which a range of stakeholders fulfil different roles in the carrying out of the processes involved. The aim of the study was to analyse the heritagisation processes and their tourist value enhancement and how it affects local development in Mértola (Baixo Alentejo, Portugal). A series of interviews with the chief stakeholders in the process were conducted, from which the contexts and conceptualisations of development were determined. On the basis of secondary data in terms of statistics, an analysis of the impacts of the process of heritagisation and the development of tourism was undertaken. The main conclusions drawn by the research are the following: (a) the importance of the process of heritagisation in Mértola; (b) the viability of the project, given the cost and lack of comprehensive conservation, in creating a unified whole; (c) the performance of, and power relationships between, the various stakeholders; (d) the limited participation of locals due to disaffection with the project; (e) the correlation between heritage, rural tourism, and local development

    Development of carbon fiber acrylonitrile styrene acrylate composite for large format additive manufacturing

    The increasing interest of Large Format Additive Manufacturing (LFAM) technologies in various industrial sectors mainly lies on the attainable production of pieces reaching several cubic meters. These new technologies require the development of optimized materials with two-folded capabilities, able to satisfy functional in-service requirements but also showing a proper printability. Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate (ASA) is among the most interesting thermoplastic materials to be implemented in a LFAM device due to its excellent wettability and mechanical properties. This research focuses on the development and characterization of ASA and carbon fiber (CF) ASA composites suitable for LFAM. The rheological, thermal and mechanical properties of neat ASA and ASA containing 20 wt% CF are addressed. The results evidence the higher performance of the CF loaded composite compared to the raw ASA polymer (i.e., the 20 wt% CF composite shows a 350% increase in flexural Young's Modulus and a 500% increment in thermal conductivity compared with neat ASA). Additionally, both materials were successfully printed along perpendicular directions (X and Z), showing the maximum tensile strain for the composite printed along the X orientation as was expected. The results of the flexural tests are comparable or slightly higher than those of injected parts. Finally, the fracture surface was analysed, identifying different types of porosity

    Discriminant Canonical Analysis as a Validation Tool for Multivariety Native Breed Egg Commercial Quality Classification

    This study aimed to develop a tool to validate multivariety breed egg quality classification depending on quality-related internal and external traits using a discriminant canonical analysis approach. A flock of 60 Utrerana hens (Franciscan, White, Black, and Partridge) and a control group of 10 Leghorn hens were placed in individual cages to follow the traceability of the eggs and perform an individual internal and external quality assessment. Egg groups were determined depending on their commercial size (S, M, L, and XL), laying hen breed, and variety. Egg weight, major diameter, minor diameter, shell b*, albumen height, and the presence or absence of visual defects in yolk and/or albumen showed multicollinearity problems (variance inflation factor (VIF) > 5) and were discarded. Albumen weight, eggshell weight, and yolk weight were the most responsible traits for the differences among egg quality categories (Wilks’ lambda: 0.335, 0.539, and 0.566 for albumen weight, eggshell weight, and yolk weight, respectively). The combination of traits in the first two dimensions explained 55.02% and 20.62% variability among groups, respectively. Shared properties between Partridge and Franciscan varieties may stem from their eggs presenting heavier yolks and slightly lower weights, while White Utrerana and Leghorn hens’ similarities may be ascribed to hybridization reminiscences

    Research Areas: Agriculture ; Veterinary Sciences ; ZoologyA total of 137,927 controls of 22,932 Murciano-Granadina first lactation goats (measured between 1996–2016) were evaluated to determine the influence of the number of kids, season, year and farm on total milk yield, daily milk yield, lactation length, total production of fat and protein and percentages of fat and protein. All factors analyzed had a significant effect on the variables studied, except for the influence of the number of kids on the percentages of fat and protein, where the variation was very small. Goats with two offspring produced nearly 15% more milk, fat and protein per lactation compared to goats with simple kids. Kiddings occurring in summer–autumn resulted in average milk, fat and protein yields nearly 14, 19 and 23% higher when compared to winter–spring kiddings. Lactation curves were evaluated to determine the effects of the number of kids and season, using the linearized version of the model of Wood in random regression analyses. Peak Yield increased by about 0.3 kg per additional offspring at kidding, but persistence was higher in goats with single offspring. The kidding season significantly influenced the lactation curve shape. Hence summer-kidding goats were more productive, and peak occurred earlier, while a higher persistence was observed in goats kidding during autumn.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Comparativa del comportamiento acústico entre fachadas multicapas ligeras y fachadas tradicionales

    Los sistemas de fachadas multicapas ligeras presentan características favorables respecto al ahorro en el consumo energético, ya que presentan un excelente comportamiento térmico. Sin embargo, desde el punto de vista acústico, en general han sido poco estudiados. Los primeros datos que se tienen es que no suelen alcanzar los valores de aislamiento acústico requeridos en el Código Técnico de la Edificación (CTE) en entornos especialmente ruidosos. Por lo tanto, los objetivos principales de esta investigación son obtener sistemas de fachadas multicapas ligeras con un alto grado de aislamiento acústico, que puedan ser empleados en entornos ruidosos. Al mismo tiempo que presenten excelentes características térmicas, sin descuidar aspectos tan importantes como la sostenibilidad de los materiales, la industrialización, los costes, entre otros. En este artículo se explicará el proceso que se ha llevado a cabo para realizar una investigación relacionada con el comportamiento acústico de fachadas multicapas ligeras. Para ello se han empleado los métodos de medida del comportamiento acústico a ruido aéreo e intensimetría sonora.     Synthesis and Characterisation of Acrylic Resin-Al Powder Composites Suitable for Additive Manufacturing

    Stereolithography is an additive manufacturing technology commonly used to build either prototypes or final parts. Nevertheless, the manufacture of structural parts has been ruled out owing to the poor mechanical properties of conventional UV-curable resins. Moreover, the inventory of available commercial resins is still limited and they exhibit low thermal and electrical conductivity values. In this work, some composite materials were designed using Al microparticles dispersed within an SLA commercial resin matrix. These composites overcame the difficulties caused by the light scattering effect during the photopolymerisation process in the SLA technology. Dispersion of the filler was characterised by means of SEM/EDX and AFM. The composites exhibited improved thermal and mechanical behaviour in comparison with the pristine resin. The simplicity of the synthesis method used to prepare the composites provides a convenient starting point to explore new ways of designing composites for SLA with improved mechanical and functional properties

    An Old Technique with A Promising Future: Recent Advances in the Use of Electrodeposition for Metal Recovery

    Although the first published works on electrodeposition dates from more than one century ago (1905), the uses of this technique in the recovery of metals are attracting an increasing interest from the scientific community in the recent years. Moreover, the intense use of metals in electronics and the necessity to assure a second life of these devices in a context of circular economy, have increased the interest of the scientific community on electrodeposition, with almost 3000 works published per year nowadays. In this review, we aim to revise the most relevant and recent publications in the application of electrodeposition for metal recovery. These contributions have been classified into four main groups of approaches: (1) treatment and reuse of wastewater; (2) use of ionic liquids; (3) use of bio-electrochemical processes (microbial fuel cells and microbial electrolysis cells) and (4) integration of electrodeposition with other processes (bioleaching, adsorption, membrane processes, etc.). This would increase the awareness about the importance of the technology and would serve as a starting point for anyone that aims to start working in the field

    Coupling of electrodialysis and bio-electrochemical systems for metal and energy recovery from acid mine drainage

    BACKGROUND This work studied the treatment of a synthetic sphalerite acid mine drainage (AMD). The treatment was carried out by means of a previous concentration stage using electrodialysis, followed by electrodeposition using a bioelectrochemical system (BES). RESULTS The best concentration results were obtained when operating the electrodialysis at 8 V and at a diluate/concentrate volume ratio of 3. This treatment yielded a concentrate fraction of about 25% of the volume and a clear fraction of about 75% of the volume. The concentrated fraction was treated in a BES for the electrodeposition of the metal contained. By operating a microbial fuel cell (MFC), the spontaneous reactions took place and, in 2 days, all the Fe3+ was reduced to Fe2+; then, all the Cu2+ was electrodeposited as pure Cu0 in about 8 days. The maximum current density attained in this stage was 0.1 mA cm−2 and the maximum power was 0.05 W cm−2. Then, a subsequent operation of a microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) allowed for the simultaneous recovery of the Fe2+, Ni2+, Zn2+, and Cd2+ as a mixed metal mass. CONCLUSION The electrodialysis yielded a clear effluent representing 75% of the total volume and a concentrated effluent accounting for 25%. It was possible to treat the concentrated effluent in an MFC, recovering pure Cu0 with a net electricity generation. The non-spontaneous metal reductions were subsequently accomplished by means of MEC, the electricity requirements being lower than those in the case of the raw AMD due to the higher mass transfer rate and the reduction of the Ohmic loses. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI).ANTECEDENTES En este trabajo se estudió el tratamiento de un drenaje ácido de mina (DAM) sintético de esfalerita. El tratamiento se realizó mediante una etapa previa de concentración mediante electrodiálisis, seguida de electrodeposición mediante un sistema bioelectroquímico (BES). RESULTADOS Los mejores resultados de concentración se obtuvieron al operar la electrodiálisis a 8 V y a una relación de volumen diluido/concentrado de 3. Este tratamiento produjo una fracción concentrada de aproximadamente el 25% del volumen y una fracción clara de aproximadamente el 75% del volumen. La fracción concentrada se trató en una BES para la electrodeposición del metal contenido. Mediante el funcionamiento de una pila de combustible microbiana (MFC), se produjeron las reacciones espontáneas y, en 2 días, todo el Fe3+ se redujo a Fe2+; a continuación, todo el Cu2+ se electrodepositó como Cu0 puro en unos 8 días. La densidad de corriente máxima alcanzada en esta etapa fue de 0,1 mA cm-2 y la potencia máxima de 0,05 W cm-2. A continuación, una operación posterior de una célula de electrólisis microbiana (MEC) permitió la recuperación simultánea del Fe2+, Ni2+, Zn2+ y Cd2+ como masa metálica mixta. CONCLUSIÓN La electrodiálisis produjo un efluente claro que representaba el 75% del volumen total y un efluente concentrado que representaba el 25%. Fue posible tratar el efluente concentrado en una MFC, recuperando Cu0 puro con una generación neta de electricidad. Las reducciones no espontáneas de metales se realizaron posteriormente mediante MEC, siendo los requerimientos de electricidad menores que en el caso del AMD crudo debido a la mayor tasa de transferencia de masa y a la reducción de las pérdidas óhmicas. 2023 Sociedad de la Industria Química (SCI)

    Sexual Dimorphism and Breed Characterization of Creole Hens through Biometric Canonical Discriminant Analysis across Ecuadorian Agroecological Areas

    Despite Ecuador having a wide biodiversity of zootechnical species, characterization studies of these genetic resources are scarce. The objective of this research was to perform the biometric characterization of the Creole hen population through 14 quantitative zoometric measures. We evaluated 207 hens and 37 roosters from Ecuador’s three agro-ecological regions: the Sierra (highlands) region (Bolivar, Chimborazo, Tungurahua and Cotopaxi provinces); the Costa (coastal) region (Guayas); and the Oriente Amazonian region (Morona Santiago). Sexual dimorphism was assessed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Body dimensions were generally significantly higher for males (p < 0.05), especially for length of head, beak, neck, dorsum, tarsus, thigh, leg, and middle finger. Then, individuals were biometrically clustered into populations after a stepwise canonical discriminant analysis (CDA) computing interpopulation Mahalanobis distances. Agroecologically-based structured populations were identified when zoometrical criteria were used to classify the animals. Cotopaxi and Tungurahua provinces were reported to be the most distant from the rest, with a slight differentiation of the Morona Santiago province population from those in Guayas, Chimborazo and Bolívar. Conclusively, Ecuadorian Creole hens were higher than longer contrasting light hen breeds, which favors their dual-purpose aptitude. Hence, the development of selection programs aimed at Ecuadorian differentiated entity of production of eggs and meat across agro-ecological areas is feasible
