The present paper tackles the situation of *s between consonants in Mycenaean Greek. It is proposed that inherited *s was still preserved in that position. The Mycenaean evidence is twofold: orthographic, with one example of written s (a3-ka-sa-ma), and phonetic, since the position between consonants is more conservative than other positions where an intermediate stage before its disappereance in alphabetic Greek is attested for that phoneme

The biographical funerary texts coming from tombs built one of the most important gender of egyptian literature from the Pharaonic times. The V Dynasty is an important step in the growth of this kind of text. Here we fi nd the fi rst occurrence of what we call “the unique event”, focusing on a concrete incident in the life of the man, usually connected with the king. This is a very important element for the later long narrative biographies from the end of the VI Dynasty and the First Intermediate Period, that undoubtedly built one of the peaks of this genre
The name was for the Egyptians an essential part of the individual. In narrative fictional texts, we find it
describing the literary character, helping to shape its image and performance. In the second story contained
in the Westcar Papyrus, the “Tale of the Deceived Husband”, the protagonist, a priest-reader and magician,
bears the name of Uba-Iner, “He-who-open-the-stone”. We offer an assessment of the meaning and use of
this name, clearly related to the plot of the story and the actions of the main character of the tale.Unión Europea, Ministerio de Economia y Competitividad HAR2014-52323-
Adverbs, particles, and discourse markers: αὖ and αὖθις in Greek historians
funciona prototípicamente como un adverbio,
mientras que algunos estudiosos consideran que αὖ
es más bien una partícula. Ambos elementos están
relacionados etimológicamente y se usan como
marcadores del discurso en contextos similares. Mi
The aim of this paper is the study of αὖ and αὖθις in
the texts of Greek historians. Αὖθις prototypically
functions as an adverb, but the same can not be
said of αὖ, which is considered by some scholars
to be a particle. Both words are etymologically related
and are used as discourse markers in similar
contexts. I am going to argue that αὖ and αὖθις are
to be described in my corpus as temporal adverbs
that can be used as discourse markers, a function
proper to the so-called particles in Ancient Greek.
Their function as discourse markers is to be classified
among the discourse organisers that structure
series of parallel members
Concessive Participles and Epitactic Constructions in Ancient Greek
The purpose of this paper is to explain the construction of concessive participles introduced by kaì taûta in Ancient Greek as an instance of epitaxis, a specific type of coordination. This construction will be differentiated from the concessive participles introduced by adverbial kaí, the usual construction, by its syntactic configuration and pragmatics. The data is drawn from the works of Xenophon of Athens (c. 430–354bc)
A Note on Unparticle Decays
The coupling of an unparticle operator O_U to Standard Model particles opens
up the possibility of unparticle decays into standard model fields. We study
this issue by analyzing the pole structure (and spectral function) of the
unparticle propagator, corrected to account for one-loop polarization effects
from virtual SM particles. We find that the propagator of a scalar unparticle
(of scaling dimension 1 < d_U < 2) with a mass gap m_g develops an isolated
pole, m_p^2-i m_p Gamma_p, with m_p^2 < m_g^2 below the unparticle continuum
that extends above m_g (showing that the theory would be unstable without a
mass gap). If that pole lies below the threshold for decay into two standard
model particles the pole corresponds to a stable unparticle state (and its
width Gamma_p is zero). For m_p^2 above threshold the width is non zero and
related to the unparticle decay rate into Standard Model particles. This
picture is valid for any value of d_U in the considered range.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure
The aim of this paper is to identify the temporal adverbs that are used as connectives with consecutive nuance in Ancient Greek and to ascertain their peculiarities in that use. The searched corpus are the works by Herodotus, Thucydides, Xenophon and Polybius. We can conclude from our data that the temporal adverbs used as connectives with consecutive nuance in Ancient Greek are those expressing sequentiality and that the evolution of some of them into illative conjunctions is at its beginning.
The implored heaven. Piedrahíta’s chalcolithic prayers (Montellano, Seville) and its archaeological context
This article expounds a series of archaeological materials from the chalcolithic site of Piedrahíta, located
in a village called Montellano (Seville). Bone and stone pieces traditionally interpreted as small idols are analyzed
deliberately, although we lean towards an interpretation of them as human representations in a motion of prayer. These
elements were accompanied by a unique and remarkable archaeological documentation, defined by lithic industries
carved and polished, a generous number of boulders along with shells of several dissimilar mollusks and a batch of
burnt fauna bones. It could be considered part of grave goods, even though there are other ritual hypotheses that cannot
be ruled out
