    Therevidae (Diptera) in the East-Flemish inland dunes, pioneers on sandy soils?

    Relicts of East-Flemish inland dunes were investigated for the presence of dune-land fauna. Five of the 8 therevid species known from Flanders were found in the present study. In contrast to asilids, therevids showed to be pioneer species preferring areas with large bare sandy patches. Pit fall traps proved to be twice as effective to sample therevids than white or yellow pan traps. Yellow traps are ineffective. Highest activity and diversity is found in June and July

    The distribution of ant nest (Hymenoptera, Formicidae) in coastal grey dunes of Flanders (Belgium) and their relationship to myrmecochorous plants

    During the summer of 2001, we conducted a study on the spatial distribution of ants in coastal grey dunes (Oostduinkerke, Western Flanders, Belgium). Nest locations of the most abundant ant species were analysed with multivariate techniques. Tetramorium caespitum frequented moss-dominated vegetation, whereas Myrmica sabuleti, M. scabrinodis, Lasius flavus and L. meridionalis preferred grassy vegetations. Formica cunicularia and L. psammophilus occurred in all types of grey dune vegetation. According to recent literature, a positive spatial relationship can exist between the positioning of ant nests and the location of the myrmecochorous plants Viola curtisii, Luzula campestris and Polygala vulgaris in coastal dunes. Neither preliminary investigations, nor our study could confirm this significant positive relationship: the occurrence of myrmecochorous plants seems to be independent of the proximity of nests. It is possible that relationships are masked by a high turnover rate of the nest sites or by a restricted seedling establishment. We did not, however, observe ants transporting seeds of Viola, Luzula or Polygala in the field, possibly indicating the inefficiency of searching for those seeds in areas where population densities of these plants are rather low and other food sources are abundantly available

    Introduction and Establishment of the Exotic Mosquito Species Aedes japonicus japonicus (Diptera: Culicidae) in Belgium

    The establishment of the potential vector species Aedes (Finlaya) japonicus japonicus (Theobald) (Diptera: Culicidae) in southern Belgium is reported. The species was most likely introduced through the international trade in used tires. It was first collected in 2002 on the premises of a second-hand tire company and was sampled using different sampling methods in the two consecutive years (2003-2004). It was only in 2007 and 2008, during a national mosquito survey (MODIRISK), that its presence as adults and larvae at the above-mentioned site and at another tire company in the area was confirmed based on morphological and molecular identification. This discovery is the first record for Belgium of an exotic mosquito species that established successfully and raises the question on the need for monitoring and control. Considering the accompanying species found during the surveys, we also report here the first observation of Culex (Maillotia) hortensis hortensis (Ficalbi) in Belgiu

    Presentamos la primera revisión exhaustiva de los taxones de hormigas del archipiélago de Galápagos. La revisión se basa en datos recopilados durante búsquedas bibliográficas, encuestas de campo y la revisión de especímenes de museos, e incluye información sobre la distribución, hábitat y ecología de 47 especies. Se supone que al menos nueve de estas especies son nativas o endémicas de las islas y al menos 32 especies se han introducido a través de vías asociadas a los humanos. Se desconoce el estado de las seis especies restantes. La información compilada en este estudio nos permitirá comprender mejor el papel ecológico de las especies indígenas y su potencial como indicadores de la salud del ecosistema. La información de referencia sobre la distribución de hormigas introducidas será indispensable para evaluar el impacto y la propagación dentro del archipiélago.We present the first comprehensive review of the ant taxa of the Galápagos archipelago. The review is based on data gathered during literature searches, field surveys, and the revision ofmuseum specimens, and includes information on the distribution, habitat, and ecology of 47 species. At least nine of these species are assumed to be native or endemic to the islands and at least 32 species have been introduced through human-associated pathways. The status of the remaining six species is unknown. The information compiled in this study will allow us to better understand the ecological role of indigenous species and their potential as indicators of ecosystem health. Baseline information on the distribution of introduced ants will be indispensable for assessing impact and spread within the archipelago
