The psychological impact of overactive bladder: a systematic review

    Get PDF
This review aimed to provide an overview of the current research on the psychological impact of overactive bladder. A systematic search yielded 32 papers. It was found that people with overactive bladder tended to have greater levels of depression, anxiety and embarrassment/shame; difficulties with social life; impact on sleep and sexual relationships; and a lower quality of life than people without overactive bladder. A psychological impact on family members was also found. Psychological health should be considered an important aspect of managing overactive bladder and further research is required to determine how best to provide psychological care and support in this area

Retail Food Access in Rural Kansas: Two Models for Two Small Towns

    Get PDF
Allen County, Kansas is defined by low incomes, the legacy of extractive industries, and poor health. Iola, the county seat, is home to roughly half the county’s residents (5,704 people) and several large factories. The basis for the town is low-wage line work, and the town is, in large part, working poor. In 2009, after the opening of a Wal-Mart Supercenter on the edge of town, the only standalone grocery store in town closed. Citizen organizing combined with an intensive recruitment effort, and five years and nine separate grocery chains later, G&W Foods agreed to build new, next to market-rate apartments and in the midst of the densest neighborhood in town. The close collaboration of Iola, Allen County, Iola Industries, Thrive Allen County, and G&W was key in creating a mixed-use, infill development in a small town, and doors opened on January 5, 2018. Moran, Kansas, population 522, is a small town that anchors the eastern end of Allen County. It is the hub of activity for farmers, ranchers and oilfield workers in the area, roughly 2,000 people. Stub’s Market, a small, but full-service, market, has been for sale for five years. In 2017, the community group Moran PRIDE-Thrive and Thrive Allen County started organizing a consumer cooperative, and The Marmaton Market started taking household memberships on July 14, 2017 at “God, Country and Groceries.” As of January 31, 2018, the Market has 103 owner-members in a town of 220 households, and the membership has voted unanimously to move forward with the purchase, renovation and re-opening of Stub’s Market as a co-op. Attendees come away with a deeper understanding of the politics, finance and other dynamics involved in both models, recruiting a chain to build new and organizing a community to form a cooperative

When is better really better? Individuals' experiences of treatment for OAB with anticholinergic medication

    Get PDF
Overactive bladder (OAB) has been found to have a number of psychological consequences, including anxiety, depression and shame. However, there is little research on how drug treatment, which has been found to be effective at reducing physical symptoms, impacts on these psychological effects. This study aimed to examine patients’ experiences of anticholinergic treatment for OAB, and the impact of both OAB and its treatment on psychological well-being. A cross-sectional, qualitative interview design with a secondary care outpatient sample was used. The approach was idiographic and sought to understand the detailed complexities and nuances of patient experiences. This small-scale qualitative study found that, even where there had been symptom reduction, patients did not feel ‘better’, and found it difficult to let go of worries and fears around OAB. These findings suggest that a person with OAB may need support even after a ‘successful’ treatment, as OAB continues to be at the centre of patients’ lives

The playground effect: how augmented reality drives creative customer engagement

    Get PDF
Across various customer experiences, Augmented Reality (AR) is emerging as a strategic experience design tool. This study contributes to an emerging body of research on the use of AR in the early stages of customers’ purchase journeys. Extending previous research, we propose that AR enables a unique form of customer creativity that is distinct from prior conceptualizations of creativity through its association with customer engagement. Specifically, we propose a sequential process of creative customer engagement, in which AR-enabled customer creativity stems from heightened customer engagement and, in turn, offers a source of intrinsic satisfaction for customers. In an experiment with a customer-facing AR application, we empirically demonstrate this sequential mediation process connecting the use of AR with customer engagement, customer creativity, and anticipated satisfaction. We also identify an important boundary condition based on a customer’s assessment orientation, suggesting a novel behavioral effect in the context of regulatory mode theory

    Preventing Zoonotic Influenza Virus Infection

We evaluated 49 swine industry workers and 79 nonexposed controls for antibodies to swine influenza viruses. Multivariate modeling showed that workers who seldom used gloves (odds ratio [OR] 30.3) or who smoked (OR 18.7) most frequently had evidence of previous H1N1 swine virus. These findings may be valuable in planning for pandemic influenza

Implications of Cannabis Use and Heavy Alcohol Use on HIV Drug Risk Behaviors in Russian Heroin Users

    Get PDF
Cannabis and heavy alcohol use potentially increase HIV transmission by increasing risky drug behaviors. We studied 404 subjects entering treatment for heroin dependence, in St. Petersburg, Russia. We used the HIV Risk Assessment Battery (RAB) drug subscale to measure risky drug behavior. Although all heavy alcohol users had risky drug behaviors, their drug RAB scores did not differ from non-heavy alcohol users in unadjusted or adjusted analyses. Cannabis use was significantly associated with drug RAB scores in unadjusted analyses (mean difference 1.7 points) and analyses adjusted for age, sex, and employment (mean difference 1.3 points). When also adjusting for stimulant use, the impact of cannabis use was attenuated and no longer statistically significant (mean difference 1.1 points). Because of the central role of risky drug behaviors in the Russian HIV epidemic, it is important to understand how the use of multiple substances, including cannabis and alcohol, impacts risky drug behaviors
