    effectiveness of aquatic therapy in post-surgery rehabilitation of the rotator cuff

    Introduction: rotator cuff injuries very often require surgical repair and subsequent rehabilitation. The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of a traditional and an aquatic post-surgery rehabilitation program of the rotator cuff in 20 adult (60±5y) patients. Methods:patients were randomly assigned to a traditional (TR; n=10) and to an aquatic (WR; n=10) rehabilitation group. Both programs started 15 days after the surgery, lasted 3 months (3 times-a-week), and consisted in passive mobilization followed by strengthening exercises. The only WR group underwent to an adjunctive aquatic mobilization program. Before (pre-intervention) and after (post-intervention) the programs, patients underwent the following assessments: shoulder range of motion (ROM), in both flexion and extra rotation positions; pain perception (visual analogue scale); simple shoulder test. Results: pre vs. post-intervention results were compared in each group by means of a dependent-samples t-Test on each variables. An independent-samples t-Test was used to analyze pre-intervention differences between TR and WR groups; since no significant differences were found, the same test was used to analyze post-intervention differences. Pre- vs post-intervention results showed significant improvements in all variables in both groups (p 0,005) Discussion: although the water-based program did not result more effective than the traditional program at the end of the three months, the aquatic rehabilitation seemed to improve shoulder ROM faster than the traditional one and to be better tolerated by the patients.     Discovering the spatial coverage of the documents through the SpatialCIM Methodology.

    The main focus of this paper is to present the SpatialCIM methodology to identify the spatial coverage of the documents in the Brazilian geographic area. This methodology uses a linguistic tool to assist in the entity recognition process. The linguistic tool classifies the recognized entities as person, organization, time and localization, among others. The localization entities are checked using a geographic information system (GIS) in order to extract the Brazilian entity geographic paths. If there are multiple geographic paths for a single entity, the disambiguation process is carried out. This process attempts to locate the best geographic path for an entity considering all the geographic entities in the text. Another important objective of this paper is to show that the disambiguation process improves the geographic classification of the documents considering the obtained geographic paths. The validation process considers a set of news previously labeled by an expert and compared with the results of the disambiguated and non-disambiguated geographic paths. The results showed that the disambiguation process improves the classification compared with the classification without disambiguation.     Factorizing the time evolution operator

    There is a widespread belief in the quantum physical community, and in textbooks used to teach Quantum Mechanics, that it is a difficult task to apply the time evolution operator Exp{-itH/h} on an initial wave function. That is to say, because the hamiltonian operator generally is the sum of two operators, then it is a difficult task to apply the time evolution operator on an initial wave function f(x,0), for it implies to apply terms operators like (a+b)^n. A possible solution of this problem is to factorize the time evolution operator and then apply successively the individual exponential operator on the initial wave function. However, the exponential operator does not directly factorize, i. e. Exp{a+b} is not equal to Exp{a}Exp{b}. In this work we present a useful procedure for factorizing the time evolution operator when the argument of the exponential is a sum of two operators, which obey specific commutation relations. Then, we apply the exponential operator as an evolution operator for the case of elementary unidimensional potentials, like the particle subject to a constant force and the harmonic oscillator. Also, we argue about an apparent paradox concerning the time evolution operator and non-spreading wave packets addressed previously in the literature.Comment: 24 pages; added references; one figure change
