BACKGROUND: Defoliation by Anticarsia gemmatalis (H ¨ ubner), Pseudoplusia includens (Walker), Spodoptera eridania (Cramer), S. cosmioides (Walker) and S. frugiperda (JE Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) was evaluated in four soybean genotypes. A multiple-species economic threshold (ET), based upon the species? feeding capacity, is proposed with the aim of improving growers? management decisions on when to initiate control measures for the species complex. RESULTS: Consumption by A. gemmatalis, S. cosmioides or S. eridania on different genotypes was similar. The highest consumption of P. includens was 92.7 cm2 on Codetec 219RR; that of S. frugiperda was 118 cm2 on Codetec 219RR and 115.1 cm2 on MSoy 8787RR. The insect injury equivalent for S. cosmoides, calculated on the basis of insect consumption, was double the standard consumption by A. gemmatalis, and statistically different from the other species tested, which were similar to each other. CONCLUSIONS: As S. cosmioides always defoliated nearly twice the leaf area of the other species, the injury equivalent would be 2 for this lepidopteran species and 1 for the other species. The recommended multiple-species ET to trigger the beginning of insect control would then be 20 insect equivalents per linear metre

Role of Narrow Band Imaging Endoscopy in Preoperative Evaluation of Laryngeal Leukoplakia: A Review of the Literature

    Get PDF
Introduction: Leukoplakia is a precancerous lesion considered to be within the spectrum of histopathological results from parakeratosis, through stages of dysplasia to invasive cancer. Narrow band imaging (NBI) endoscopy has been introduced to improve early diagnosis of benign and malignant laryngeal lesions. The aim of this literature review was to evaluate the accuracy of preoperative evaluation of vocal fold leukoplakia with NBI endoscopy in comparison with histology. Methods: A systematic review of the literature was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, using 3 different databases: PubMed, Embase, and Scopus. The included articles in the systematic review were identified combining each of the following terms: “narrow band imaging” OR “NBI,” [AND] with each of these terms: “laryngeal leukoplakia,” OR “vocal fold leukoplakia,” OR “vocal cord leukoplakia.” Results: The articles that fully met the inclusion criteria were 5 case series, conducted between January 2010 and February 2018, and published between 2017 and 2019. The selected articles included 312 patients (86% males and 14% females), affected by 382 vocal cord leukoplakia, evaluated with NBI endoscopy and that underwent surgical microlaryngoscopy with biopsy. Based on the studies included in the review, accuracy of NBI in predicting malignancy within leukoplakia ranged from 81% to 97.8%, demonstrating to be an accurate method to predict the risk of malignant transformation of vocal fold leukoplakia. Conclusion: Narrow band imaging can help otolaryngologists in the decision-making process on the necessity to perform a biopsy and transoral surgery or long-term follow-up. Larger studies are necessary to confirm the high association of NBI evaluation of the epithelium surrounding the leukoplakia with the histological diagnosis

Techno-economic evaluation of buffered accelerated weathering of limestone as a CO2 capture and storage option

Carbon dioxide storage technologies are needed not only to store the carbon captured in the emissions of hard-to-abate sectors but also for some carbon dioxide removal technologies requiring a final and permanent storage of CO2. The pace and scale of geological CO2 storage deployment have fallen short of expectations, and there is a growing interest in ocean-based CO2 storage options. As complementary to geological storage, buffered accelerated weathering of limestone (BAWL) has been proposed to produce a buffered ionic solution at seawater pH, derived from the reaction in seawater between a CO2 stream and a micron-sized powder of calcium carbonate (CaCO3), within a long tubular reactor. The addition of calcium hydroxide to buffer the unreacted CO2 before the discharge in seawater is also envisaged. BAWL avoids the risks of CO2 degassing back into the atmosphere and does not induce seawater acidification. This work presents a mass and energy balance and preliminary cost analysis of the technology for different configurations of discharge depth (100, 500, 3,000 m), pipeline length (10, 25, 100 km) and diameter of CaCO3 particles (1, 2, 10 mu m) fed in the tubular reactor. The total energy consumption to capture and store 1 t of CO2 generated by a steam-methane reforming (SMR) process ranges from 1.3 to 2.2 MWh. The CO2 released from the CaCO3 calcination to produce the buffering solution leads to a total CO2 storage requirement 43-85% higher than the CO2 derived by SMR. The total cost to capture and store 1 t of CO2 from SMR is estimated in the range 142-189 euro

Effect of different finishing strategies and steer temperament on animal welfare and instrumental meat tenderness

The aim of this experiment was to evaluate the effect of different fattening systems from pasture to concentrate and temperament on animal welfare (AW) and meat quality (MQ). Eighty-four Hereford steers were randomly assigned to the following groups: T1, pasture (4% of animal live weight: LW); T2, pasture (3% LW) plus concentrate (0.6% LW); T3, pasture (3% LW) plus concentrate (1.2% LW); T4, an ad libitum concentrate treatment. Temperament was assessed by three individual tests: crush score, flight time, and exit speed, building a multicriterial temperament index (TIndex). The flight zone was also registered for each treatment. AW was assessed through the integration of indicators of productivity, physiology, and behavior, as well as by monitoring the health status within each treatment. Shear force was registered for MQ. Differences in average daily gain were due to the different energetic composition of the diets (T4 > T3 > T2 > T1) and were not attributable to animal welfare problems. Animals from T4 had the higher average daily gain (ADG) but welfare was negatively affected, being evident through physiological indicators, the restriction or deprivation of relevant behaviors, diet-related diseases, and mortality. T1, T2, and T3 did not appear to compromise animal welfare. However, strict preventive measures and monitoring should be taken during the habituation process and when using any new diet that includes concentrate, because of possible dietary diseases. Shear force values were lower in T1. None of the animals in our experiment were excitable or aggressive, but there was a positive response to handling in all treatments. In addition, regardless of diet, calmer animals had higher average daily gain and lower shear force values; thus, temperament appears to have a significant influence on productivity and meat quality
