Comment on "Why quantum mechanics cannot be formulated as a Markov process"
In the paper with the above title, D. T. Gillespie [Phys. Rev. A 49, 1607,
(1994)] claims that the theory of Markov stochastic processes cannot provide an
adequate mathematical framework for quantum mechanics. In conjunction with the
specific quantum dynamics considered there, we give a general analysis of the
associated dichotomic jump processes. If we assume that Gillespie's
"measurement probabilities" \it are \rm the transition probabilities of a
stochastic process, then the process must have an invariant (time independent)
probability measure. Alternatively, if we demand the probability measure of the
process to follow the quantally implemented (via the Born statistical
postulate) evolution, then we arrive at the jump process which \it can \rm be
interpreted as a Markov process if restricted to a suitable duration time.
However, there is no corresponding Markov process consistent with the

Resonant, broadband and highly efficient optical frequency conversion in semiconductor nanowire gratings at visible and UV wavelengths
Using a hydrodynamic approach we examine bulk- and surface-induced second and
third harmonic generation from semiconductor nanowire gratings having a
resonant nonlinearity in the absorption region. We demonstrate resonant,
broadband and highly efficient optical frequency conversion: contrary to
conventional wisdom, we show that harmonic generation can take full advantage
of resonant nonlinearities in a spectral range where nonlinear optical
coefficients are boosted well beyond what is achievable in the transparent,
long-wavelength, non-resonant regime. Using femtosecond pulses with
approximately 500 MW/cm2 peak power density, we predict third harmonic
conversion efficiencies of approximately 1% in a silicon nanowire array, at
nearly any desired UV or visible wavelength, including the range of negative
dielectric constant. We also predict surface second harmonic conversion
efficiencies of order 0.01%, depending on the electronic effective mass,
bistable behavior of the signals as a result of a reshaped resonance, and the
onset fifth order nonlinear effects. These remarkable findings, arising from
the combined effects of nonlinear resonance dispersion, field localization, and
phase-locking, could significantly extend the operational spectral bandwidth of
silicon photonics, and strongly suggest that neither linear absorption nor skin
depth should be motivating factors to exclude either semiconductors or metals
from the list of useful or practical nonlinear materials in any spectral range.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figure
Commentary: Principles, Approaches and Challenges of Applying Big Data in Safety Psychology Research
This commentary builds upon the recent theoretical paper by Kang et al. (2019) to advance the debate currently going on about psychology and big data. The aim is to discuss the feasibility of extending the conceptualization proposed by the authors\u2014i.e., Big Data of Safety Psychology (BDSP)\u2014to other branches of psychology going beyond the only safety domain, ultimately pointing out a big data of whatever psychology scenario. This will lead to suggest a perspective enrichment from a solely big data applied to psychology paradigm toward a much less advocated psychology applied to big data
Hardware prototyping and validation of a W-ΔDOR digital signal processor
Microwave tracking, usually performed by on ground processing of the signals coming from a spacecraft, represents a crucial aspect in every deep-space mission. Various noise sources, including receiver noise, affect these signals, limiting the accuracy of the radiometric measurements obtained from the radio link. There are several methods used for spacecraft tracking, including the Delta-Differential One-Way Ranging (ΔDOR) technique. In the past years, European Space Agency (ESA) missions relied on a narrowband ΔDOR system for navigation in the cruise phase. To limit the adverse effect of nonlinearities in the receiving chain, an innovative wideband approach to ΔDOR measurements has recently been proposed. This work presents the hardware implementation of a new version of the ESA X/Ka Deep Space Transponder based on the new tracking technique named Wideband ΔDOR (W-ΔDOR). The architecture of the new transponder guarantees backward compatibility with narrowband ΔDOR
A Next-to-Leading-Order Study of Dihadron Production
The production of pairs of hadrons in hadronic collisions is studied using a
next-to-leading-order Monte Carlo program based on the phase space slicing
technique. Up-to-date fragmentation functions based on fits to LEP data are
employed, together with several versions of current parton distribution
functions. Good agreement is found with data for the dihadron mass
distribution. A comparison is also made with data for the dihadron angular
distribution. The scale dependence of the predictions and the dependence on the
choices made for the fragmentation and parton distribution functions are also
presented. The good agreement between theory and experiment is contrasted to
the case for single production where significant deviations between

Labial fusion is defined as either partial or complete adherence of the labia minora (1), and also called vulvar fusion, adhesions of the labia minor or conglutination of the labia minora and sinechia of the vulva. The complete and severe labial fusion is a rare pathology with a small number of cases reported in the literature in adults. We present a case report of a postmenopausal woman who presented with voiding difficulty and incontinence and was treated by surgical division of the adhesions and immediate resolution of the urinary incontinence confirmed by multichannel urodynamic test postoperatively

Age estimation in children by measurement of open apices in teeth: a European formula
The aim of the present paper was to improve and
expand research with a larger number of children from various
European countries and to provide a common formula useful
for all these countries. Orthopantomographs taken from 2,652
European Caucasian children (1,382 boys, 1,270 girls) aged
between 4 and 16 years were analyzed. The children came from
Croatia, Germany, Kosovo, Italy, Slovenia, Spain, and the UK.
Following the pilot study, subjects’ age was modeled as a
function of gender (g), morphological variables (predictors)×5
(second premolar), s (sum of normalized open apices) N0, and
the first-order interaction between s and N0. The results
showed that all these variables contributed significantly to
the fit, so that all were included in the regression model,
yielding the following linear regression formula: Age=8.387+
0.282 g−1.692×5+0.835 N0−0.116 s−0.139 s×N0, where
g is a variable, 1 for males and 0 for females. The equation
explained 86.1% (R2=0.861) of total deviance. The median
of the residuals (=observed age minus predicted age) was
−0.114 years, with (RefB.2) interquartile range=1.22 years
Histological and immunohistochemical evaluation of mandibular bone tissue regeneration
The purpose of the study was to perform an immunohistochemical and histological evaluation of samples taken from different bone regeneration procedures in atrophic human mandible. 30 patients (15 men and 15 women, age range of 35-60 years), non-smokers, with good general and oral health were recruited in this study and divided into three groups. The first group included patients who were treated with blood Concentration Growth Factors (bCGF), the second group included patients who were treated with a mixture of bCGF and autologous bone, while the third group of patients was treated with bCGF and tricalcium phosphate/hydroxyapatite (TCP-HA). Six months after the regenerative procedures, all patients undergone implant surgery, and a bone biopsy was carried out in the site of implant insertion. Each sample was histologically and immunohistochemically examined. Histological evaluation showed a complete bone formation for group II, partial ossification for group I, and moderate ossification for group III. Immunohistochemical analysis demonstrated a statistically significant difference between the three groups, and the best clinical result was obtained with a mixture of bCGF and autologous bone
Inflammatory markers as prognostic factors of survival in patients affected by hepatocellular carcinoma undergoing transarterial chemoembolization
Transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) is a good choice for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) treatment when surgery and liver transplantation are not feasible. Few studies reported the value of prognostic factors influencing survival after chemoembolization. In this study, we evaluated whether preoperative inflammatory factors such as neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio and platelet to lymphocyte ratio affected our patient survival when affected by hepatocellular carcinoma. Methods. We retrospectively evaluated a total of 72 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma that underwent TACE. We enrolled patients with different etiopathogeneses of hepatitis and histologically proven HCC not suitable for surgery. The overall study population was dichotomized in two groups according to the median NLR value and was analyzed also according to other prognostic factors. Results. The global median overall survival (OS) was 28 months. The OS in patients with high NLR was statistically significantly shorter than that in patients with low NLR. The following pretreatment variables were significantly associated with the OS in univariate analyses: age, Child-Pugh score, BCLC stage, INR, and NLR. Pretreated high NLR was an independently unfavorable factor for OS. Conclusion. NLR could be considered a good prognostic factor of survival useful to stratify patients that could benefit from TACE treatment
