    Desarrollo gradual de las competencias transversales en el Grado en Farmacia. Metodologías y herramientas de evaluación para el “profesional en formación”

    Objetivo: Establecer niveles de dominio de algunas competencias transversales del Grado en Farmacia y diseñar e implementar metodologías y herramientas que permitan su desarrollo y evaluación a lo largo de la Titulación. Material y Método: Se han utilizado metodologías activas, diseñado actividades y elaborado rúbricas de evaluación para utilizar en los distintos niveles definidos para las competencias transversales elegidas: comunicación escrita, búsqueda de información y trabajo en equipo. Se ha elaborado una encuesta de satisfacción, que ha permitido valorar la experiencia realizada. Resultados: Los resultados obtenidos en tres asignaturas de primer y segundo curso de Farmacia (Fisicoquímica, Inmunología y Microbiología y Parasitología General) para las competencias de la comunicación escrita, trabajo en equipo y búsqueda de información, en los niveles de dominio 1 y 2, han sido muy positivos en la adquisición de las competencias y en la adecuación de actividades y herramientas de evaluación. Conclusiones: Las herramientas diseñadas, se pueden adaptar a cualquier materia y área de conocimiento para valorar estas competencias transversales, además, permiten al alumno conocer los criterios con los que va a ser evaluado. El presente trabajo ha potenciado la creación y desarrollo de grupos docentes y favorecido la coordinación entre asignaturas de la titulación.Aim: To set different levels of acquisition of some cross-curricular competencies in the Pharmacy Degree and to design and implement methodologies and tools to allow their development and evaluation along the whole curriculum. Material and Method: Different active methodologies have been used, and tasks and evaluation rubrics have been prepared to be applied in the different levels defined for the cross-curricular competencies selected: written communication skills, information seeking, and teamwork. Similarly, a student satisfaction survey has been designed in order to evaluate the implementation of the experience. Results: The results obtained in the core subjects of the 1st and 2nd year of the Pharmacy Degree (Physical Chemistry, Immunology and General Microbiology and Parasitology) for the competences of written communication skills, teamwork and information seeking, in levels 1 and 2, have been very successful in terms of the acquisition of competences and in the suitability of the different tasks and evaluation tools proposed. Conclusions: The tools designed to evaluate these cross-curricular competencies can be adapted to any subject and knowledge field, in addition, they allow the student to be aware of the criteria used for his evaluation.     Effects of Microwave Heating on Sensory Characteristics of Kiwifruit Puree

    The effect of microwave processing on the characteristics of kiwifruit puree was evaluated by applying various gentle treatments. Different combinations of microwave power/processing time were applied, with power among 200-1,000 W and time among 60-340 s, and various sensory and instrumental measurements were performed with the aim of establishing correlations and determining which instrumental parameters were the most appropriate to control the quality of kiwi puree. The water and soluble solids of the product, 83 and 14/100 g sample, respectively, did not change due to treatments. For sensory assessment, an expert panel was previously trained to describe the product. Fourteen descriptors were defined, but only the descriptors 'typical kiwifruit colour', 'tone', 'lightness', 'visual consistency' and 'typical taste' were significant to distinguish between kiwifruit puree samples. The instrumental analysis of samples consisted in measuring consistency, viscosity, colour and physicochemical characteristics of the treated and fresh puree. Applying intense treatments (600 W-340 s, 900 W-300 s and 1,000 W-200 s) through high power or long treatment periods or a combination of these factors, mainly affects the consistency (flow distance decreased from 5. 9 to 3. 4 mm/g sample), viscosity (increased from 1. 6 to 2. 5 Pa/s), colour (maximun ¿E was 6 U) and taste of the product. As a result, samples were thicker and with an atypical flavour and kiwifruit colour due to increased clarity (L* increased from 38 to 43) and slight changes in the yellow-green hue (h* decreased from 95 to 94).     Examining Alternative Measures of Social Disadvantage Among Asian Americans: The Relevance of Economic Opportunity, Subjective Social Status, and Financial Strain for Health

    Socioeconomic position is often operationalized as education, occupation, and income. However, these measures may not fully capture the process of socioeconomic disadvantage that may be related to morbidity. Economic opportunity, subjective social status, and financial strain may also place individuals at risk for poor health outcomes. Data come from the Asian subsample of the 2003 National Latino and Asian American Study (n = 2095). Regression models were used to examine the associations between economic opportunity, subjective social status, and financial strain and the outcomes of self-rated health, body mass index, and smoking status. Education, occupation, and income were also investigated as correlates of these outcomes. Low correlations were observed between all measures of socioeconomic status. Economic opportunity was robustly negatively associated with poor self-rated health, higher body mass index, and smoking, followed by financial strain, then subjective social status. Findings show that markers of socioeconomic position beyond education, occupation, and income are related to morbidity among Asian Americans. This suggests that potential contributions of social disadvantage to poor health may be understated if only conventional measures are considered among immigrant and minority populations

    Cross-national comparison of the link between socioeconomic status and emotional and behavioral problems in youths

    Introduction: In previous longitudinal studies in the US, lower socioeconomic status (SES) was associated with more emotional and behavioral problems. It remains unclear whether these findings can be generalized outside the US, as different countries vary in their health care systems and prevention of psychopathology in youth. Therefore, we studied the same associations in a comparable sample in The Netherlands and directly tested for differences between the US and The Netherlands. Methods: The US (N = 833) and Dutch (N = 708) population samples were followed-up for 9 years. Age at baseline ranged from 8 to 16 years. Parents filled out behavior checklists. Results: Analyses revealed very few differences between the two countries. In both countries, SES predicted syndrome scores and cumulative prevalence rates for internalizing and externalizing problems (withdrawn and aggressive behavior) and for thought and attention Problems. The SES gradient in syndrome scores was stable over time. Only for withdrawn behavior, the gradient was larger in young adulthood.     Frequency of Fabry disease in male and female haemodialysis patients in Spain

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Fabry disease (FD), an X-linked lysosomal storage disorder, is caused by a reduced activity of the lysosomal enzyme α-galactosidase A. The disorder ultimately leads to organ damage (including renal failure) in males and females. However, heterozygous females usually present a milder phenotype with a later onset and a slower progression.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A combined enzymatic and genetic strategy was used, measuring the activity of α-galactosidase A and genotyping the α-galactosidase A gene (<it>GLA</it>) in dried blood samples (DBS) of 911 patients undergoing haemodialysis in centers across Spain.</p> <p>Results</p> <p><it>GLA </it>alterations were found in seven unrelated patients (4 males and 3 females). Two novel mutations (p.Gly346AlafsX347 and p.Val199GlyfsX203) were identified as well as a previously described mutation, R118C. The R118C mutation was present in 60% of unrelated patients with <it>GLA </it>causal mutations. The D313Y alteration, considered by some authors as a pseudo-deficiency allele, was also found in two out of seven patients.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Excluding the controversial D313Y alteration, FD presents a frequency of one in 182 individuals (0.55%) within this population of males and females undergoing haemodialysis. Moreover, our findings suggest that a number of patients with unexplained and atypical symptoms of renal disease may have FD. Screening programmes for FD in populations of individuals presenting severe kidney dysfunction, cardiac alterations or cerebrovascular disease may lead to the diagnosis of FD in those patients, the study of their families and eventually the implementation of a specific therapy.</p

    Environmentally Persistent Free Radicals (EPFRs). 3. Free versus Bound Hydroxyl Radicals in EPFR Aqueous Solutions

    Additional experimental evidence is presented for in vitro generation of hydroxyl radicals because of redox cycling of environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) produced after adsorption of 2-monochlorophenol at 230 °C (2-MCP-230) on copper oxide supported by silica, 5% Cu(II)O/silica (3.9% Cu). A chemical spin trapping agent, 5,5-dimethyl-1-pyrroline-N-oxide (DMPO), in conjunction with electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy was employed. Experiments in spiked O17 water have shown that ∼15% of hydroxyl radicals formed as a result of redox cycling. This amount of hydroxyl radicals arises from an exogenous Fenton reaction and may stay either partially trapped on the surface of particulate matter (physisorbed or chemisorbed) or transferred into solution as free OH. Computational work confirms the highly stable nature of the DMPO–OH adduct, as an intermediate produced by interaction of DMPO with physisorbed/chemisorbed OH (at the interface of solid catalyst/solution).     Immigration, Acculturation and Chronic Back and Neck Problems Among Latino-Americans

    Higher acculturation is associated with increased obesity and depression among Latino-Americans, but not much is known about how acculturation is related to their prevalence of back and neck problems. This study examines whether acculturation is associated with the 12-month prevalence of self-reported chronic back or neck problems among US-born and immigrant Latinos. We performed multivariable logistic regression analysis of data from 2,553 noninstitutionalized Latino adults from the 2002–2003 National Latino and Asian American Survey (NLAAS). After adjusting for demographic, physical and mental health indicators, English proficiency, nativity and higher generational status were all significantly positively associated with the report of chronic back or neck problems. Among immigrants, the proportion of lifetime in the US was not significantly associated. Our findings suggest that the report of chronic back or neck problems is higher among more acculturated Latino-Americans independent of health status, obesity, and the presence of depression
