A Volume Clearing Algorithm for Muon Tomography
The primary objective is to enhance muon-tomographic image reconstruction
capability by providing distinctive information in terms of deciding on the
properties of regions or voxels within a probed volume "V" during any point of
scanning: threat type, non-threat type, or not-sufficient data. An algorithm
(MTclear) is being developed to ray-trace muon tracks and count how many
straight tracks are passing through a voxel. If a voxel "v" has sufficient
number of straight tracks (t), then "v" is a non-threat type voxel, unless
there are sufficient number of scattering points (p) in "v" that will make it a
threat-type voxel. The algorithm also keeps track of voxels for which not
enough information is known: where p and v both fall below their respective
threshold parameters. We present preliminary results showing how the algorithm
works on data collected with a Muon Tomography station based on gas electron
multipliers operated by our group. The MTclear algorithm provides more
comprehensive information to a human operator or to a decision algorithm than
that provided by conventional muon-tomographic reconstruction algorithms, in
terms of qualitatively determining the threat possibility from a probed volume.
This is quite important because only low numbers of cosmic ray source muons are
typically available in nature for tomography, while a quick determination of

Correlations in Nuclear Matter
We analyze the nuclear matter correlation properties in terms of the pair
correlation function. To this aim we systematically compare the results for the
variational method in the Lowest Order Constrained Variational (LOCV)
approximation and for the Bruekner-Hartree-Fock (BHF) scheme. A formal link
between the Jastrow correlation factor of LOCV and the Defect Function (DF) of
BHF is established and it is shown under which conditions and approximations
the two approaches are equivalent. From the numerical comparison it turns out
that the two correlation functions are quite close, which indicates in
particular that the DF is approximately local and momentum independent. The
Equations of State (EOS) of Nuclear Matter in the two approaches are also
compared. It is found that once the three-body forces (TBF) are introduced the
two EOS are fairly close, while the agreement between the correlation functions
holds with or without TBF.Comment: 11 figure
Radioisotope thermal photovoltaic application of the GaSb solar cell
An examination of a RTVP (radioisotopic thermophotovoltaic) conceptual design has shown a high potential for power densities well above those achievable with radioisotopic thermoelectric generator (RTG) systems. An efficiency of 14.4 percent and system specific power of 9.25 watts/kg were predicted for a system with sixteen GPHS (general purpose heat source) sources operating at 1100 C. The models also showed a 500 watt system power by the strontium-90 isotope at 1200 C at an efficiency of 17.0 percent and a system specific power of 11.8 watts/kg. The key to this level of performance is a high-quality photovoltaic cell with narrow bandgap and a reflective rear contact. Recent work at Boeing on GaSb cells and transparent back GaAs cells indicate that such a cell is well within reach

This study arose from the identification of a gap in knowledge and corresponding need for the development of a better contemporary understanding of children's experiences of poverty. Fragmentation pathways of [Re₂(μ-OR)₃(CO)₆]– (R = H, Me) and ligand exchange reactions with oxygen donor ligands, investigated by electrospray mass spectrometry
The rhenium hydroxy and methoxy carbonyl complexes [Re₂(μOR)₃(CO)₆]⁻ (R = H or Me) have been studied by negative-ion electrospray mass spectrometry (ESMS). The complexes undergo facile exchange reactions with protic compounds, including alcohols and phenols. With dimethyl malonate, ester hydrolysis occurs giving carboxylate-containing complexes, and with H₂O₂ or ButOOH, oxidation to ReO₄⁻occurs. The feasibility and extent of these reactions can conveniently, rapidly, and unambiguously be determined by electrospray mass spectrometry, and is dependent on the acidity and steric bulk of the protic compound. The results also suggest that the complexes can be used as versatile starting materials for the synthesis of a wide range of analogous [Re₂(μ-OR)₃(CO)₆]⁻ complexes by simple reaction with an excess of the appropriate alcohol. By varying the applied cone voltage the fragmentation pathways have been investigated; the hydroxy complex undergoes dehydration followed by CO loss, whereas for the methoxy complex -hydride elimination (and CO loss) is observed, with confirmation provided by deuterium labelling studies. Under ESMS conditions, the neutral complexes [Re₂(μ-OR)₂(μ-dppf )(CO)₆] [R = H or Me; dppf = 1,1 -bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene] undergo substantial solvolysis and hydrolysis to give mainly mononuclear species; simple parent ions (e.g. [M + H]⁺) are not formed in appreciable abundance, probably due to the lack of an efficient ionisation pathway
Detoxification in rehabilitation in England: effective continuity of care or unhappy bedfellows?
There is evidence that residential detoxification alone does not provide satisfactory treatment outcomes and that outcomes are significantly enhanced when clients completing residential detoxification attend rehabilitation services (Gossop, Marsden, Stewart, & Rolfe, 1999; Ghodse, Reynolds, Baldacchino, et al., 2002). One way of increasing the likelihood of this continuity of treatment is by providing detoxification and rehabilitation within the same treatment facility to prevent drop-out, while the client awaits a rehabilitation bed or in the transition process. However, there is little research evidence available on the facilities that offer both medical detoxification and residential rehabilitation. The current study compares self-reported treatment provision in 87 residential rehabilitation services in England, 34 of whom (39.1%) reported that they offered detoxification services within their treatment programmes. Although there were no differences in self-reported treatment philosophies, residential rehabilitation services that offered detoxification were typically of shorter duration overall, had significantly more beds and reported offering more group work than residential rehabilitation services that did not offer detoxification. Outcomes were also different, with twice as many clients discharged on disciplinary grounds from residential rehabilitation services without detoxification facilities. The paper questions the UK classification of residential drug treatment services as either detoxification or rehabilitation and suggests the need for greater research focus on the aims, processes and outcomes of this group of treatment providers
Universality of residence-time distributions in non-adiabatic stochastic resonance
We present mathematically rigorous expressions for the residence-time and
first-passage-time distributions of a periodically forced Brownian particle in
a bistable potential. For a broad range of forcing frequencies and amplitudes,
the distributions are close to periodically modulated exponential ones.
Remarkably, the periodic modulations are governed by universal functions,
depending on a single parameter related to the forcing period. The behaviour of
the distributions and their moments is analysed, in particular in the low- and
