Flow visualization study of a two-dimensional representation of the Space Shuttle launch pad configuration
The loss of the Space Shuttle Challenger was caused by the failure of the aft joint O-ring seals in its right solid rocket booster. It has been suggested by several sources that wind conditions through a reduction in temperature of the right solid rocket booster caused by the wind blowing across the cold external tank, played a role in the O-ring failure. To check the plausibility of the wind theory, an experiment was carried out in a water towing tank to visualize the flow past a two-dimensional model representing a cross section of the Space Shuttle launch configuration. The periodic formation of vortices was found to characterize the wake generated by the model. It is suggested that this organized motion in the flow is the dominant mechanism that accomplishes heat transfer from the external tank to the right solid rocket booster. Experimental unsteady aerodynamics of conventional and supercritical airfoils
Experimental data on the unsteady aerodynamics of oscillating airfoils in transonic flow are presented. Two 0.5 m-chord airfoil models - an NACA 64A010 and an NLR 7301 - were tested in the NASA-Ames 11 by 11 foot Transonic Wind Tunnel at Mach numbers to 0.85, at chord Reynolds numbers to 12 million and at mean angles of attack to 4 deg. The airfoils were subjected to both pitching and plunging motions at reduced frequencies to 0.3 (physical frequencies to 53 Hz). The new hardware and the extensive use of computer-experiment integration developed for this test are described. The geometrical configuration of the model and the test arrangement are described in detail. Mean and first harmonic data are presented in both tabular and graphical form to aid in comparisons with other data and with numerical computations
Options for demonstrating the use of solar energy in california buildings
Three programmatic options for demonstrating the most economically attractive applications of solar energy to buildings located in California are formulated. The unique characteristics of solar energy demonstration programs and the involvement of key decision makers are discussed in detail. The demonstration programs are related to specific purposes. The priority structure used to select the generic projects making up each program is discussed in relationship to the purposes of the program. In addition, some implications of the nature of the demonstration program for management are outlined

Rocketdyne's advanced coal slurry pumping program
The Rocketdyne Division of Rockwell International Corporation is conducting a program for the engineering, fabrication, and testing of an experimental/prototype high-capacity, high-pressure centrifugal slurry feed pump for coal liquefaction purposes. The abrasion problems in a centrifugal slurry pump are primarily due to the manner in which the hard, solid particles contained in the slurry are transported through the hydraulic flow passages within the pump. The abrasive particles can create scraping, grinding, cutting, and sandblasting effects on the various exposed parts of the pump. These critical areas involving abrasion and impact erosion wear problems in a centrifugal pump are being addressed by Rocketdyne. The mechanisms of abrasion and erosion are being studied through hydrodynamic analysis, materials evaluation, and advanced design concepts

ASCA observations of massive medium-distant clusters of galaxies. II
We have selected seven medium-distant clusters of galaxies (z ~ 0.1 - 0.3)
for multi-wavelength observations with the goal of investigating their
dynamical state. Following Paper I (Pierre et al. 1999) which reported the ASCA
results about two of them, we present here the analysis of the ASCA
observations of the other five clusters; RXJ1023.8-2715 (A3444),
RXJ1031.6-2607, RXJ1050.5-0236 (A1111), RXJ1203.2-2131(A1451), and
RXJ1314.5-2517. Except for RXJ1031.6, whose X-ray emission turned out to be
dominated by an AGN, the ASCA spectra are well fitted by a one-temperature thin
thermal plasma model. We compare the temperature-luminosity relation of our
clusters with that of nearby ones (z<0.1). Two clusters, RXJ1050.5 and
RXJ1023.8, show larger luminosities than the bulk of clusters at similar
temperatures, which suggests the presence of a cooling flow. The temperature
vs. iron-abundance relationship of our sample is consistent with that of nearby
