    La microscopie en immunofluorescence a été utilisée avec des anticorps monoclonaux pour montrer que la production d'antigènes dans les glandes oesophagiennes de #Meloidogyne incognita est régulée par le développement durant la phase parasite et que quelques-uns de ces antigènes peuvent être excrétés au travers du stylet. Plusieurs antigènes des glandes oesophagiennes sont temporairement exprimés dans les glandes subventrales et dorsale des juvéniles préparasites de deuxième stade (J2), des juvéniles parasites (J2) et des femelles adultes. Deux anticorps monoclonaux reconnaissant les glandes subventrales de J2 et un anticorps monoclonal reconnaissant la glande dorsale et les glandes subventrales de J2, reconnaissent également les sécrétions passant au travers du stylet des J2. Deux anticorps monoclonaux reconnaissant la glande dorsale des femelles adultes, et un anticorps monoclonal reconnaissant leurs glandes subventrales, reconnaissent aussi les sécrétions passant au travers du stylet des femelles adultes.     Elemental patterns in Ni hyperaccumulating and non-hyperaccumulating ultramafic soil populations of Senecio coronatus

    AbstractNickel hyperaccumulation can defend plants against herbivores and pathogens. However, variability in plant tissue elemental concentrations in space and time will influence the effectiveness of this defense. We investigated a South African Ni hyperaccumulator, Senecio coronatus Thunb. (Harv.), for variation in nine elements (Ni plus Ca, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, P and Zn) between populations and between above-ground and below-ground plant organs (leaves, roots). Plant material was collected from four populations growing on ultramafic soils in the vicinity of Badplaas, Mpumalanga Province, South Africa. Concentrations of Ca, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Ni, P and Zn were determined in dry-ashed samples. Two-way analysis of variance of data for each element revealed considerable variation in S. coronatus plant chemistry. Leaf concentrations of all elements except Cu were generally greater than root concentrations. Population-level variation was found for Ca, Fe, Mn, P, Ni and Zn, and of these all but P showed significant two-way interactions as well. Significant positive correlations were found between some pairs of elements: in hyperaccumulator roots (Ni–Ca, K–Mg), non-hyperaccumulator roots (Fe–Mn, Fe–Zn, Fe–Cu, Cu–Zn), hyperaccumulator leaves (P–Mg, P–Fe, P–Mn, Fe–Mg) and non-hyperaccumulator leaves (P–Mn, P–Ca, Ca–Mn). Two populations hyperaccumulated Ni in leaves (means of 12,000 and 8800 μg Ni/g) whereas the others did not (means of 120 and 130 μg Ni/g). Such extreme population-level variation in Ni accumulation ability is unusual among Ni hyperaccumulator species: its physiological basis and possible consequences for plant elemental defense deserve further investigation

    High frequency sound in superfluid 3He-B

    We present measurements of the absolute phase velocity of transverse and longitudinal sound in superfluid 3He-B at low temperature, extending from the imaginary squashing mode to near pair-breaking. Changes in the transverse phase velocity near pair-breaking have been explained in terms of an order parameter collective mode that arises from f-wave pairing interactions, the so-called J=4- mode. Using these measurements, we establish lower bounds on the energy gap in the B-phase. Measurement of attenuation of longitudinal sound at low temperature and energies far above the pair-breaking threshold, are in agreement with the lower bounds set on pair-breaking.     Intranasal Resveratrol Nanoparticles Enhance Neuroprotection in a Model of Multiple Sclerosis.

    Resveratrol is a natural polyphenol which has a very low bioavailability but whose antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic properties may have therapeutic potential for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS). Previously, we reported the oral administration of resveratrol nanoparticles (RNs) elicited a neuroprotective effect in an experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) mouse model of MS, at significantly lower doses than unconjugated resveratrol (RSV) due to enhanced bioavailability. Furthermore, we demonstrated that the intranasal administration of a cell-derived secretome-based therapy at low concentrations leads to the selective neuroprotection of the optic nerve in EAE mice. The current study sought to assess the potential selective efficacy of lower concentrations of intranasal RNs for attenuating optic nerve damage in EAE mice. EAE mice received either a daily intranasal vehicle, RNs or unconjugated resveratrol (RSV) for a period of thirty days beginning on the day of EAE induction. Mice were assessed daily for limb paralysis and weekly for visual function using the optokinetic response (OKR) by observers masked to treatment regimes. After sacrifice at day 30, spinal cords and optic nerves were stained to assess inflammation and demyelination, and retinas were immunostained to quantify retinal ganglion cell (RGC) survival. Intranasal RNs significantly increased RGC survival at half the dose previously shown to be required when given orally, reducing the risk of systemic side effects associated with prolonged use. Both intranasal RSV and RN therapies enhanced RGC survival trends, however, only the effects of intranasal RNs were significant. RGC loss was prevented even in the presence of inflammatory and demyelinating changes induced by EAE in optic nerves. The intranasal administration of RNs is able to reduce RGC loss independent of the inflammatory and demyelinating effects on the optic nerve and the spinal cord. The concentration of RNs needed to achieve neuroprotection is lower than previously demonstrated with oral administration, suggesting intranasal drug delivery combined with nanoparticle conjugation warrants further exploration as a potential neuroprotective strategy for the treatment of optic neuritis, alone as well as in combination with glucocorticoids

    Analysis of Strong-Coupling Parameters for Superfluid 3He

    Superfluid 3^{3}He experiments show strong deviation from the weak-coupling limit of the Ginzburg-Landau theory, and this discrepancy grows with increasing pressure. Strong-coupling contributions to the quasiparticle interactions are known to account for this effect and they are manifest in the five β\beta-coefficients of the fourth order Ginzburg-Landau free energy terms. The Ginzburg-Landau free energy also has a coefficient gzg_{z} to include magnetic field coupling to the order parameter. From NMR susceptibility experiments, we find the deviation of gzg_{z} from its weak-coupling value to be negligible at all pressures. New results for the pressure dependence of four different combinations of β\beta-coefficients, β\beta_{345}, β\beta_{12}, β\beta_{245}, and β\beta_{5} are calculated and comparison is made with theory.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, 1 table.     Constraints on composite Dirac neutrinos from observations of galaxy clusters

    Recently, to explain the origin of neutrino masses a model based on confining some hidden fermionic bound states into right-handed chiral neutrinos has been proposed. One of the consequences of condensing the hidden sector fields in this model is the presence of sterile composite Dirac neutrinos of keV mass, which can form viable warm dark matter particles.     Associations between blood sex steroid concentrations and risk of major adverse cardiovascular events in healthy older women in Australia: a prospective cohort substudy of the ASPREE trial

    Background: Blood testosterone concentrations in women decline during the reproductive years and reach a nadir in the seventh decade, after which concentrations increase and are restored to those of reproductive-aged women early in the eighth decade. We aimed to establish the association between the concentration of testosterone in the blood and risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and all-cause mortality in healthy older women. Methods: SHOW was a prospective cohort substudy of the longitudinal randomised ASPREE trial. Eligible participants were women aged at least 70 years from Australia with unimpaired cognition, no previous MACE, and a life expectancy of at least 5 years. Participants who were receiving hormonal or steroid therapy were ineligible for inclusion. We measured serum concentrations of sex steroids with liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry and of SHBG with immunoassay. We compared lower concentrations of sex hormones with higher concentrations using four quartiles. Primary endpoints were risk of MACE and all-cause mortality, the associations of which with sex steroid concentrations were assessed using Cox proportional hazards regression that included age, body-mass index, smoking status, alcohol consumption, diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidaemia, impaired renal function, and treatment allocation in the ASPREE trial (aspirin vs placebo). ASPREE is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT01038583. Findings: Of the 9180 women recruited to the ASPREE trial between March 10, 2010, and Dec 31 2014, 6358 participants provided sufficient biobank samples at baseline and 5535 were included in the final analysis. Median age at entry was 74·0 years (IQR 71·7–77·7). During a median 4·4 years of follow-up (24 553 person-years), 144 (2·6%) women had a first MACE (incidence 5·9 per 1000 person-years). During a median 4·6 years of follow-up (3·8–5·6), 200 women died (7·9 per 1000 person-years). In the fully adjusted models, higher concentrations of testosterone were associated with a lower incidence of MACE (quartile 4 vs quartile 1: hazard ratio 0·57 [95% CI 0·36–0·91]; p=0·02), as were higher concentrations of DHEA (quartile 4 vs quartile 1: 0·61 [0·38–0·97]; p=0·04). For oestrone, a lower risk of MACE was seen for concentrations in quartile 2 only, compared with quartile 1 (0·55 [0·33–0·92]; p=0·02). In fully adjusted models, no association was seen between SHBG and MACE, or between any hormone or SHBG and all-cause mortality. Interpretation: Blood concentrations of testosterone and DHEA above the lowest quartile in older women were associated with a reduced risk of a first-ever MACE. Given that the physiological effects of DHEA are mediated through its steroid metabolites, if the current findings were to be replicated, trials investigating testosterone therapy for the primary prevention of ischaemic cardiovascular disease events in older women would be warranted.     Solar Neutrinos with Three Flavor Mixings

    The recent 71Ga solar neutrino observation is combined with the 37Cl and Kamiokande-II observations in an analysis for neutrino masses and mixings. The allowed parameter region is found for matter enhanced mixings among all three neutrino flavors.
