Poetry written by committee? It should not be possible, yet my family and friends often play a game which produces something like poetry. Short stories, too
Stochastic Gene Expression in a Lentiviral Positive Feedback Loop: HIV-1 Tat Fluctuations Drive Phenotypic Diversity
Stochastic gene expression has been implicated in a variety of cellular
processes, including cell differentiation and disease. In this issue of Cell,
Weinberger et al. (2005) take an integrated computational-experimental approach
to study the Tat transactivation feedback loop in HIV-1 and show that
fluctuations in a key regulator, Tat, can result in a phenotypic bifurcation.
This phenomenon is observed in an isogenic population where individual cells
display two distinct expression states corresponding to latent and productive
infection by HIV-1. These findings demonstrate the importance of stochastic
gene expression in molecular "decision-making."Comment: Supplemental data available as q-bio.MN/060800
Brain tumor in the morbidly obese patient: Diagnostic and therapeutic challenges
Tumors of the sellar and the suprasellar region are complex tumors and high-quality imaging is fundamental for diagnosis, characterization, and guidance of treatment planning. While the gold standard for diagnostics is contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), it is a challenging procedure in morbidly obese patients. This report aims to present a case of a morbidly obese patient with a brain tumor and the diagnostic and therapeutic challenges of its treatment
Skijaški palac - prikaz slučaja
Ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) rupture of the metacarpophalangeal joint of the thumb, in literature also known as skier\u27s thumb, is an acute injury commonly seen in athletes such as skiers and handball players. This type of tear is associated with a Stener lesion where part of the torn UCL is displaced dorsal and superficial to the adductor aponeurosis. This report aims to present a case of Stener lesion in a young patient that was successfully treated surgically.
Near Infrared Imaging of the Hubble Deep Field with The Keck Telescope
Two deep K-band () images, with point-source detection limits of
mag (one sigma), taken with the Keck Telescope in subfields of the
Hubble Deep Field, are presented and analyzed. A sample of objects to K=24 mag
is constructed and and colors are measured. By
stacking visually selected objects, mean colors can be measured to
very faint levels; the mean color is constant with apparent
magnitude down to mag.Comment: Replaced with slightly revised source positions and corrected V-I
magnitudes (which were incorrect in the Tables and Figure 5). 18 pages. The
data are publicly available at http://www.cco.caltech.edu/~btsoifer/hdf.html
along with a high-resolution version of Fig.
Multiple primary tumours: papillary thyroid car- cinoma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and Non-Hodgkin mantle cell lymphoma in a male patient
INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: Multiple primary tumors (MPM) are defined as more than one synchronous cancer in the same patient. Lymphoma and thyroid cancer are common individually, although they rarely present synchronously. Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) has been associated with the radiotherapeutic treatment of Hodgkin\u27s lymphoma. Concomitant chronic lymphocytic leukemia (B- CLL) and mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is rare combination where a multiparametric approach is necessary to diagnose two distinct cell populations at the same time
Resekcijska artroplastika kuka: uspješna metoda liječenja difuznog B-velikostaničnog limfoma kuka
Diffuse large B-cell lymphomas (DLBCL) are a type of aggressive B-cell neoplasms. Lympho- mas account for approximately 3 to 7% of primary bone tumors, while 40 to 50% of lymphoma metastases involve the skeletal system. We report a case of a patient with anaplastic DLBCL of the pelvis, spine, abdomen, femur, and hip joint capsule.Difuzni B-velikostanični limfomi (DLBCL) agresivni su tip B staničnih novotvorina. Limfomi čine 3 do 7% primarnih koštanih tumora, dok 40 do 50% metastaza limfoma zahvaća koštani sustav. Prikazujemo slučaj pacijenta s anaplastičnim DLBCL zdjelice, kralježnice, abdomena, femura i zglobne čahure kuka
