Testosterone treatment induces an initial phase of pseudopregnancy followed by persistant vaginal eornification, and then an eventual return to normal estrous cycles. It is proposed that the normal cyclic mechanism controlling ovulation is interfered with in a temporary manner after testosterone treatment in adult female rats in contrast to the permanent persistent vaginal eornification seen after such treatment in neonatal rats

    The self-reference effect on memory in early childhood

    The self-reference effect in memory is the advantage for information encoded about self, relative to other people. The early development of this effect was explored here using a concrete encoding paradigm. Trials comprised presentation of a self- or other-image paired with a concrete object. In Study 1, 4- to 6-year-old children (N = 53) were asked in each trial whether the child pictured would like the object. Recognition memory showed an advantage for self-paired objects. Study 2 (N = 55) replicated this finding in source memory. In Study 3 (N = 56), participants simply indicated object location. Again, recognition and source memory showed an advantage for self-paired items. These findings are discussed with reference to mechanisms that ensure information of potential self-relevance is reliably encoded

    Untangling the Health Impacts of Mexico – U.S. Migration

    Research has found that immigrant health has a tendency to decline with time spent in the United States.  Using data from the Mexican Migration Project from 2007-2014, this paper is the first to test the impact of domestic and international migration on different types of health measures.  Results find cumulative U.S. migration experience has a negative impact both on self-reported and objective health measures.  By contrast, the number of trips to the United States and migrations made within Mexico impact individual’s self-assessment of their health but not objective health measures.  The analyses suggest that differences in self-reported versus objective health measures may help to explain mixed results in the literature.  Results suggest that individual’s health will suffer considerably more from U.S. migrations than from migration within Mexico which is consistent with the acculturation hypothesis.  Not surprisingly, high levels of BMI and smoking are significant predictors of negative self-reported and objective health.  There is also a troubling significant negative trend in health over time observed in the sample. Taken as a whole, these results suggest that even short trips to the United States can have a negative health effect on immigrants if they are repeated

    Rural water districts in Illinois

    Research was conducted on the legal-organization, the economic and the spatial aspects of rural water systems. With encouragement from subsidized federal government credit, rural water systems serving farmers, nonfarm residents in the open country and residents of towns under 10,000 people have been developed to meet the demands for a dependable quality domestic water supply. The 59 districts financed in part by the Farmers Home Administration, USDA, and serving only farmers and nonfarm rural residence customers in Illinois were the objects of the research. In general, these systems serve 24,000 customers and maintain 4,200 miles of line. They are located in the southern, the west-central, and the east-central regions of Illinois. The systems received financial assistance from the federal government in the form of construction grants and/or low interest loans authorized initially in 1954. The systems are generally owned and operated by "water supply districts," a special unit of local government and have to comply with all operating procedures and regulations required of public water supplies under Illinois Environmental Protection Agency authority. In analyzing the costs of rural water service, districts with greater volume and/or higher user density generally had lower operating costs. The median number of users reported was 278. In 1980 dollars, the per user average outlay for operating costs and debt retirement was approximately 16.00permonth.Only22percentofruralwaterdistrictuserswerefarmers.Consumptionlevelsaveraged4.64thousandgallonspermonthatanaveragepriceof16.00 per month. Only 22 percent of rural water district users were farmers. Consumption levels averaged 4.64 thousand gallons per month at an average price of 5.77. The demand for rural water service was inelastic over much of the relevant range of observations.     Human epicardial adipose tissue expresses a pathogenic profile of adipocytokines in patients with cardiovascular disease

    Introduction: Inflammation contributes to cardiovascular disease and is exacerbated with increased adiposity, particularly omental adiposity; however, the role of epicardial fat is poorly understood. Methods: For these studies the expression of inflammatory markers was assessed in epicardial fat biopsies from coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) patients using quantitative RT-PCR. Further, the effects of chronic medications, including statins, as well as peri-operative glucose, insulin and potassium infusion, on gene expression were also assessed. Circulating resistin, CRP, adiponectin and leptin levels were determined to assess inflammation. Results: The expression of adiponectin, resistin and other adipocytokine mRNAs were comparable to that in omental fat. Epicardial CD45 expression was significantly higher than control depots (p < 0.01) indicating significant infiltration of macrophages. Statin treated patients showed significantly lower epicardial expression of IL-6 mRNA, in comparison with the control abdominal depots (p < 0.001). The serum profile of CABG patients showed significantly higher levels of both CRP (control: 1.28 ± 1.57 μg/mL vs CABG: 9.11 ± 15.7 μg/mL; p < 0.001) and resistin (control: 10.53 ± 0.81 ng/mL vs CABG: 16.8 ± 1.69 ng/mL; p < 0.01) and significantly lower levels of adiponectin (control: 29.1 ± 14.8 μg/mL vs CABG: 11.9 ± 6.0 μg/mL; p < 0.05) when compared to BMI matched controls. Conclusion: Epicardial and omental fat exhibit a broadly comparable pathogenic mRNA profile, this may arise in part from macrophage infiltration into the epicardial fat. This study highlights that chronic inflammation occurs locally as well as systemically potentially contributing further to the pathogenesis of coronary artery disease

    The International Deep Planet Survey II: The frequency of directly imaged giant exoplanets with stellar mass

    Radial velocity and transit methods are effective for the study of short orbital period exoplanets but they hardly probe objects at large separations for which direct imaging can be used. We carried out the international deep planet survey of 292 young nearby stars to search for giant exoplanets and determine their frequency. We developed a pipeline for a uniform processing of all the data that we have recorded with NIRC2/Keck II, NIRI/Gemini North, NICI/Gemini South, and NACO/VLT for 14 years. The pipeline first applies cosmetic corrections and then reduces the speckle intensity to enhance the contrast in the images. The main result of the international deep planet survey is the discovery of the HR 8799 exoplanets. We also detected 59 visual multiple systems including 16 new binary stars and 2 new triple stellar systems, as well as 2,279 point-like sources. We used Monte Carlo simulations and the Bayesian theorem to determine that 1.05[+2.80-0.70]% of stars harbor at least one giant planet between 0.5 and 14M_J and between 20 and 300 AU. This result is obtained assuming uniform distributions of planet masses and semi-major axes. If we consider power law distributions as measured for close-in planets instead, the derived frequency is 2.30[+5.95-1.55]%, recalling the strong impact of assumptions on Monte Carlo output distributions. We also find no evidence that the derived frequency depends on the mass of the hosting star, whereas it does for close-in planets. The international deep planet survey provides a database of confirmed background sources that may be useful for other exoplanet direct imaging surveys.     Support for smoke-free multi-unit housing policies among racially and ethnically diverse, low-income seniors in south florida

    Open access: http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10823-014-9247-4/fulltext.html Previous studies have gauged support for implementing smoke-free MUH policies in the United States, but none have specifically examined attitudes among racially and ethnically diverse seniors living in low-income MUH. As part of an evaluation of a Community Transformation Grant funded program, we surveyed senior residents 62 years of age and older (n = 807) in 24 low-income housing properties in Broward County, Florida, to assess residents’ smoking behaviors, exposure to SHS, and support for smoke-free MUH policies. The study sample was ethnically and racially diverse with Hispanics comprising more than 61% of the population, and 22% of the population identified as Black or other races. Although close to 22% of the sample were former smokers, only 9% of residents reported being current smokers. The majority of residents surveyed supported no-smoking policies: 75% support no-smoking policies for individual units; 77% supported no-smoking policies in common areas; and, 68% supported no-smoking policies in outdoor areas. Over 29% of residents surveyed reported being exposed to secondhand smoke entering their units from elsewhere in their building. In sub-group analysis, Hispanic residents were significantly more likely to support both indoor (84.3 vs. 76.5, p\u3c.05) and outdoor (80.0 vs. 67.4, p\u3c.01) policies compared to non-Hispanic residents. Support for smoke-free policies did not vary significantly by race. This study demonstrates that senior residents living in low-income MUH properties overwhelmingly supported the implementation of smoke-free policies

    Enhanced CP Violation with BKD0(D0)B\to K D^0 (\overline D^0) Modes and Extraction of the CKM Angle gamma

    The Gronau-London-Wyler (GLW) method extracts the CKM angle γ\gamma by measuring B±B^\pm decay rates involving D0/D0D^0/\overline D^0 mesons. Since that method necessitates the interference between two amplitudes that are significantly different in magnitude, the resulting asymmetries tend to be small. CP violation can be greatly enhanced for decays to final states that are common to both D^0 and D0\overline D^0 and that are not CP eigenstates. In particular, large asymmetries are possible for final states f such that D0fD^0\to f is doubly Cabibbo suppressed while D0f\overline D^0\to f is Cabibbo allowed. The measurement of interference effects in two such modes allows the extraction of γ\gamma without prior knowledge of Br(BKD0)Br(B^-\to K^- \overline D^0), which may be difficult to determine due to backgrounds.Comment: 12 pages, LaTeX, no figure

    The Population of Damped Lyman-alpha and Lyman Limit Systems in the Cold Dark Matter Model

    Lyman limit and damped Lyman-alpha absorption systems probe the distribution of collapsed, cold gas at high redshift. Numerical simulations that incorporate gravity and gas dynamics can predict the abundance of such absorbers in cosmological models. We develop a semi-analytical method to correct the numerical predictions for the contribution of unresolved low mass halos, and we apply this method to the Katz et al. (1996) simulation of the standard cold dark matter model (Ω=1\Omega=1, h=0.5h=0.5, Ωb=0.05\Omega_b=0.05, σ8=0.7\sigma_8=0.7). Using this simulation and higher resolution simulations of individual low mass systems, we determine the relation between a halo's circular velocity vcv_c and its cross section for producing Lyman limit or damped absorption. We combine this relation with the Press-Schechter formula for the abundance of halos to compute the number of absorbers per unit redshift. The resolution correction increases the predicted abundances by about a factor of two at z=2, 3, and 4, bringing the predicted number of damped absorbers into quite good agreement with observations. Roughly half of the systems reside in halos with circular velocities v_c>100\kms and half in halos with 35\kms. Halos with v_c>150\kms typically harbor two or more systems capable of producing damped absorption. Even with the resolution correction, the predicted abundance of Lyman limit systems is a factor of three below observational estimates, signifying either a failure of standard CDM or a failure of these simulations to resolve the systems responsible for most Lyman limit absorption. By comparing simulations with and without star formation, we find that depletion of the gas supply by star formation affects absorption line statistics at z>=2z>=2 only for column densities exceeding NHI=1022cm2N_{HI}=10^{22} cm^{-2}.Comment: AASlatex, 17 pages w/ 3 embedded ps figures.
