    Optimization flow control -- I: Basic algorithm and convergence

    We propose an optimization approach to flow control where the objective is to maximize the aggregate source utility over their transmission rates. We view network links and sources as processors of a distributed computation system to solve the dual problem using a gradient projection algorithm. In this system, sources select transmission rates that maximize their own benefits, utility minus bandwidth cost, and network links adjust bandwidth prices to coordinate the sources' decisions. We allow feedback delays to be different, substantial, and time varying, and links and sources to update at different times and with different frequencies. We provide asynchronous distributed algorithms and prove their convergence in a static environment. We present measurements obtained from a preliminary prototype to illustrate the convergence of the algorithm in a slowly time-varying environment. We discuss its fairness property

    Design for theatre is an endeavor in which the physical, the corporeal, the defined, is applied to an ephemeral artform, one meant to happen only in the moment and then fade away. As such, building the world of the theatrical space, whether physical or digital, is similar to shooting at a moving target. While one angle of approach may be perfect for a moment, being ready and flexible enough to pivot, whether to reimagine due to limitation or to adjust an entire project due to calamity, like the shift from in person to online streaming. This paper investigates the joy of research, the growing pains of development, and then the labor of reshaping and rebuilding a projection design when the Covid-19 pandemic forced a rethinking of live performance. Chapter 1 explores the excitement that comes from diving into the exploration of first concepts of design, with the beginner’s mind engaged. Chapter 2 is a discussion of virtual filmmaking and how the game building software Unreal Engine is being utilized in the film world, as well as how these relate to theatre. Chapter 3 takes us on the ride of The Pivot as a pandemic forces changes in scripts and platforms. Chapter 4 deals with the balance of choices in design elements as they relate to projection in a live space versus the Zoom live stream, specifically, motion/stillness and geography building in a 2D platform. Finally, by maintaining a level of flexibility in design and approach, the pivot allows for new outcomes and unexpected discoveries

    HST Images Flash Ionization of Old Ejecta by the 2011 Eruption of Recurrent Nova T Pyxidis

    T Pyxidis is the only recurrent nova surrounded by knots of material ejected in previous outbursts. Following the eruption that began on 2011 April 14.29, we obtained seven epochs (from 4 to 383 days after eruption) of Hubble Space Telescope narrowband Ha images of T Pyx . The flash of radiation from the nova event had no effect on the ejecta until at least 55 days after the eruption began. Photoionization of hydrogen located north and south of the central star was seen 132 days after the beginning of the eruption. That hydrogen recombined in the following 51 days, allowing us to determine a hydrogen atom density of at least 7e5 cm^-3 - at least an order of magnitude denser than the previously detected, unresolved [NII] knots surrounding T Pyx. Material to the northwest and southeast was photoionized between 132 and 183 days after the eruption began. 99 days later that hydrogen had recombined. Both then (282 days after outburst) and 101 days later, we detected almost no trace of hydrogen emission around T Pyx. There is a large reservoir of previously unseen, cold diffuse hydrogen overlapping the previously detected, [NII] - emitting knots of T Pyx ejecta. The mass of this newly detected hydrogen is probably an order of magnitude larger than that of the [NII] knots. We also determine that there is no significant reservoir of undetected ejecta from the outer boundaries of the previously detected ejecta out to about twice that distance, near the plane of the sky. The lack of distant ejecta is consistent with the Schaefer et al (2010) scenario for T Pyx, in which the star underwent its first eruption within five years of 1866 after many millennia of quiescence, followed by the six observed recurrent nova eruptions since 1890. This lack of distant ejecta is not consistent with scenarios in which T Pyx has been erupting continuously as a recurrent nova for many centuries or millennia.Comment: 27 pages, 10 figures, submitted to the Astrophysical Journa

    The Wide Brown Dwarf Binary Oph 1622-2405 and Discovery of A Wide, Low Mass Binary in Ophiuchus (Oph 1623-2402): A New Class of Young Evaporating Wide Binaries?

    We imaged five objects near the star forming clouds of Ophiuchus with the Keck Laser Guide Star AO system. We resolved Allers et al. (2006)'s #11 (Oph 16222-2405) and #16 (Oph 16233-2402) into binary systems. The #11 object is resolved into a 243 AU binary, the widest known for a very low mass (VLM) binary. The binary nature of #11 was discovered first by Allers (2005) and independently here during which we obtained the first spatially resolved R~2000 near-infrared (J & K) spectra, mid-IR photometry, and orbital motion estimates. We estimate for 11A and 11B gravities (log(g)>3.75), ages (5+/-2 Myr), luminosities (log(L/Lsun)=-2.77+/-0.10 and -2.96+/-0.10), and temperatures (Teff=2375+/-175 and 2175+/-175 K). We find self-consistent DUSTY evolutionary model (Chabrier et al. 2000) masses of 17+4-5 MJup and 14+6-5 MJup, for 11A and 11B respectively. Our masses are higher than those previously reported (13-15 MJup and 7-8 MJup) by Jayawardhana & Ivanov (2006b). Hence, we find the system is unlikely a ``planetary mass binary'', (in agreement with Luhman et al. 2007) but it has the second lowest mass and lowest binding energy of any known binary. Oph #11 and Oph #16 belong to a newly recognized population of wide (>100 AU), young (<10 Myr), roughly equal mass, VLM stellar and brown dwarf binaries. We deduce that ~6+/-3% of young (<10 Myr) VLM objects are in such wide systems. However, only 0.3+/-0.1% of old field VLM objects are found in such wide systems. Thus, young, wide, VLM binary populations may be evaporating, due to stellar encounters in their natal clusters, leading to a field population depleted in wide VLM systems.Comment: Accepted version V2.     Phylogenetic Incongruence in E. coli O104: Understanding the Evolutionary Relationships of Emerging Pathogens in the Face of Homologous Recombination

    Escherichia coli O104:H4 was identified as an emerging pathogen during the spring and summer of 2011 and was responsible for a widespread outbreak that resulted in the deaths of 50 people and sickened over 4075. Traditional phenotypic and genotypic assays, such as serotyping, pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), and multilocus sequence typing (MLST), permit identification and classification of bacterial pathogens, but cannot accurately resolve relationships among genotypically similar but pathotypically different isolates. To understand the evolutionary origins of E. coli O104:H4, we sequenced two strains isolated in Ontario, Canada. One was epidemiologically linked to the 2011 outbreak, and the second, unrelated isolate, was obtained in 2010. MLST analysis indicated that both isolates are of the same sequence type (ST678), but whole-genome sequencing revealed differences in chromosomal and plasmid content. Through comprehensive phylogenetic analysis of five O104:H4 ST678 genomes, we identified 167 genes in three gene clusters that have undergone homologous recombination with distantly related E. coli strains. These recombination events have resulted in unexpectedly high sequence diversity within the same sequence type. Failure to recognize or adjust for homologous recombination can result in phylogenetic incongruence. Understanding the extent of homologous recombination among different strains of the same sequence type may explain the pathotypic differences between the ON2010 and ON2011 strains and help shed new light on the emergence of this new pathogen

    The Battle against Emerging Antibiotic Resistance: Should Fluoroquinolones Be Used to Treat Children?

    Inappropriate use of antibiotic drugs in humans and animals has led to widespread resistance among microbial pathogens. Resistance is the phenotypic expression corresponding to genetic changes caused by either mutation or acquisition of new genetic information. In some cases, multidrug resistance occurs. Streptococcus pneumoniae is one of the most important respiratory pathogens, playing a major role in both upper and lower respiratory tract infections. Pneumococcal resistance to antimicrobials may be acquired by means of horizontal transfer followed by homologous recombination of genetic material from the normal flora of the human oral cavity or by means of mutation. Resistance to penicillins and macrolides has been increasing for some time, but, recently, fluoroquinolone resistance has become an issue as well. We are concerned that, if fluoroquinolones are approved for use in children, their widespread use will result in rapid emergence of pneumococcal resistance, because children are more often colonized in the nasopharynx with high-density populations of pneumococci than are adult

    The Little Higgs from a Simple Group

    We present a model of electroweak symmetry breaking in which the Higgs boson is a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson. By embedding the standard model SU(2) x U(1) into an SU(4) x U(1) gauge group, one-loop quadratic divergences to the Higgs mass from gauge and top loops are canceled automatically with the minimal particle content. The potential contains a Higgs quartic coupling which does not introduce one-loop quadratic divergences. Our theory is weakly coupled at the electroweak scale, it has new weakly coupled particles at the TeV scale and a cutoff above 10 TeV, all without fine tuning.
