The Hedonic Price Structure of Faculty Compensation at U.S. Colleges and Universities
Economic theory suggests that the variation in academic salaries across institutions in part reflects compensating differences associated with variation in the levels of local quality of life factors such as environmental quality and the provision of local public services. This paper presents an econometric analysis of the hedonic, or implicit price structure, of faculty compensation at U.S. colleges and universities using data from AAUP merged with data on a host of location-specific characteristics. Quality of life factors are found to be important, accounting for between 7 percent and 12.8 percent of total compensation
Incomplete Compensation and Migration Behavior: Has Anything Changed Between 1990 and 2000?
Spatial equilibrium models rely on migration to arbitrage away differences in utility across locations net of moving costs, where remaining differences in wages and rents reflect the compensating differentials related to site-specific amenities. Recent refinements to the spatial equilibrium model focus upon the prospect of disequilibrium in amenity markets. Amenity market disequilibrium implies over- or undercompensation (incomplete compensation) across some locations, which suggests a role for these factors in subsequent migration. This paper follows the theoretical and empirical approach of Clark, Herrin, Knapp, and White (2003). An intercity wage regression is estimated where fixed effects capture the impact of site characteristics on wages. We then regress the fixed effects on a comprehensive vector of site attributes, where the residuals capture incomplete compensation in wages. The derived measures of incomplete compensation are included in a binary logit model of migration. The results provide further evidence that incomplete compensation for site characteristics is a significant factor in migration decisions, and the findings are consistent with tendencies toward spatial equilibrium
Extreme Differences in Forest Degradation in Borneo: Comparing Practices in Sarawak, Sabah, and Brunei
The Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak are global hotspots of forest loss and degradation due to timber and oil palm industries; however, the rates and patterns of change have remained poorly measured by conventional field or satellite approaches. Using 30 m resolution optical imagery acquired since 1990, forest cover and logging roads were mapped throughout Malaysian Borneo and Brunei using the Carnegie Landsat Analysis System. We uncovered âŒ364,000 km of roads constructed through the forests of this region. We estimated that in 2009 there were at most 45,400 km(2) of intact forest ecosystems in Malaysian Borneo and Brunei. Critically, we found that nearly 80% of the land surface of Sabah and Sarawak was impacted by previously undocumented, high-impact logging or clearing operations from 1990 to 2009. This contrasted strongly with neighbouring Brunei, where 54% of the land area remained covered by unlogged forest. Overall, only 8% and 3% of land area in Sabah and Sarawak, respectively, was covered by intact forests under designated protected areas. Our assessment shows that very few forest ecosystems remain intact in Sabah or Sarawak, but that Brunei, by largely excluding industrial logging from its borders, has been comparatively successful in protecting its forests.CLASlite is made possible by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, the John D. and Catherine T. Representation to the accident and emergency department within 1-year of a fractured neck of femur
Background:
The fractured neck of femur (NOF) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. The mortality attendant upon such fractures is 10% at 1 month and 30% at one year with a cost to the NHS of ÂŁ1.4 billion annually. This retrospective study sought to examine rates and prevailing trends in representation to A&E in the year following a NOF fracture in an attempt to identify the leading causes behind the morbidity and mortality associated with this fracture.
Methods:
1108 patients who suffered a fractured NOF between 1 January 2002 and 31 December 2007 were identified from a University Hospital A&E database. This database was then used to identify those patients who represented within 1-year following the initial fracture. The presenting complaint, provisional diagnosis and the outcome of this presentation were identified at this time.
Results:
234 patients (21%) returned to A&E on 368 occasions in the year following a hip fracture. 77% (284/368) of these presentations necessitated admission. Falls, infection and fracture were the leading causes of representation. Falls accounted for 20% (57/284) of admissions; 20.7% of patients were admitted because of a fracture, while 56.6% of admissions were for medical ailments of which infection was the chief precipitant (28% (45/161)).
Discussion:
The causes for representation are varied and multifactorial. The results of this study suggest that some of those events or ailments necessitating readmission may be obviated and potentially reduced by interventions that can be instituted during the primary admission and continued following discharge
NYU-VAGC: a galaxy catalog based on new public surveys
Here we present the New York University Value-Added Galaxy Catalog
(NYU-VAGC), a catalog of local galaxies (mostly below a redshift of about 0.3)
based on a set of publicly-released surveys (including the 2dFGRS, 2MASS, PSCz,
FIRST, and RC3) matched to the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 2.
Excluding areas masked by bright stars, the photometric sample covers 3514
square degrees and the spectroscopic sample covers 2627 square degrees (with
about 85% completeness). Earlier, proprietary versions of this catalog have
formed the basis of many SDSS investigations of the power spectrum, correlation
function, and luminosity function of galaxies. We calculate and compile derived
quantities (for example, K-corrections and structural parameters for galaxies).
The SDSS catalog presented here is photometrically recalibrated, reducing
systematic calibration errors across the sky from about 2% to about 1%. We
include an explicit description of the geometry of the catalog, including all
imaging and targeting information as a function of sky position. Finally, we
have performed eyeball quality checks on a large number of objects in the
catalog in order to flag deblending and other errors. This catalog is
complementary to the SDSS Archive Servers, in that NYU-VAGC's calibration,
geometrical description, and conveniently small size are specifically designed
for studying galaxy properties and large-scale structure statistics using the

Roughness of molecular property landscapes and its impact on modellability
In molecular discovery and drug design, structure-property relationships and
activity landscapes are often qualitatively or quantitatively analyzed to guide
the navigation of chemical space. The roughness (or smoothness) of these
molecular property landscapes is one of their most studied geometric
attributes, as it can characterize the presence of activity cliffs, with
rougher landscapes generally expected to pose tougher optimization challenges.
Here, we introduce a general, quantitative measure for describing the roughness
of molecular property landscapes. The proposed roughness index (ROGI) is
loosely inspired by the concept of fractal dimension and strongly correlates
with the out-of-sample error achieved by machine learning models on numerous

A framework for experimental-data-driven assessment of Magnetized Liner Inertial Fusion stagnation image metrics
A variety of spherical crystal x-ray imager (SCXI) diagnostics have been
developed and fielded on Magnetized Liner Inertial Fusion (MagLIF) experiments
at the Sandia National Laboratories Z-facility. These different imaging
modalities provide detailed insight into different physical phenomena such as
mix of liner material into the hot fuel, cold liner emission, or reduce impact
of liner opacity. However, several practical considerations ranging from the
lack of a consistent spatial fiducial for registration to different
point-spread-functions and tuning crystals or using filters to highlight
specific spectral regions make it difficult to develop broadly applicable
metrics to compare experiments across our stagnation image database without
making significant unverified assumptions. We leverage experimental data for a
model-free assessment of sensitivities to instrumentation-based features for
any specified image metric. In particular, we utilize a database of historical
and recent MagLIF data including image plate scans
gathered across different experiments to assess the
impact of a variety of features in the experimental observations arising from
uncertainties in registration as well as discrepancies in signal-to-noise ratio
and instrument resolution. We choose a wavelet-based image metric known as the
Mallat Scattering Transform for the study and highlight how alternate metric
choices could also be studied. In particular, we demonstrate a capability to
understand and mitigate the impact of signal-to-noise, image registration, and
resolution difference between images. This is achieved by utilizing multiple
scans of the same image plate, sampling random translations and rotations, and
applying instrument specific point-spread-functions found by ray tracing to
high-resolution datasets, augmenting our data in an effectively model-free

Systematic techniques for assisting recruitment to trials (START): study protocol for embedded, randomized controlled trials
BACKGROUND: Randomized controlled trials play a central role in evidence-based practice, but recruitment of participants, and retention of them once in the trial, is challenging. Moreover, there is a dearth of evidence that research teams can use to inform the development of their recruitment and retention strategies. As with other healthcare initiatives, the fairest test of the effectiveness of a recruitment strategy is a trial comparing alternatives, which for recruitment would mean embedding a recruitment trial within an ongoing host trial. Systematic reviews indicate that such studies are rare. Embedded trials are largely delivered in an ad hoc way, with interventions almost always developed in isolation and tested in the context of a single host trial, limiting their ability to contribute to a body of evidence with regard to a single recruitment intervention and to researchers working in different contexts. METHODS/DESIGN: The Systematic Techniques for Assisting Recruitment to Trials (START) program is funded by the United Kingdom Medical Research Council (MRC) Methodology Research Programme to support the routine adoption of embedded trials to test standardized recruitment interventions across ongoing host trials. To achieve this aim, the program involves three interrelated work packages: (1) methodology - to develop guidelines for the design, analysis and reporting of embedded recruitment studies; (2) interventions - to develop effective and useful recruitment interventions; and (3) implementation - to recruit host trials and test interventions through embedded studies. DISCUSSION: Successful completion of the START program will provide a model for a platform for the wider trials community to use to evaluate recruitment interventions or, potentially, other types of intervention linked to trial conduct. It will also increase the evidence base for two types of recruitment intervention. TRIAL REGISTRATION: The START protocol covers the methodology for embedded trials.
