UNDERSTANDING ETHNICITY: THE RELATION AMONG ETHNIC IDENTITY, COLLECTIVISM, AND INDIVIDUALISM IN AFRICAN AMERICANS AND EUROPEAN AMERICANS
This study examined the relation among ethnic group membership, ethnic identity, collectivism and individualism in a sample of European American and African American college students. Findings suggest that African Americans are more collectivist than European Americans only in reference to their ethnic group. There were no significant differences between ethnic groups in collectivism toward friends, family, strangers or colleagues. Contrary to findings of previous research, there was no significant moderating effect of gender on collectivism differences between ethnic groups. In congruence with previous research, ethnic identity mediated the relation between ethnic group membership and collectivism toward the ethnic group. African Americans were also significantly higher on overall individualism when compared to European Americans and this relation was not mediated by ethnic identity. In addition to these findings, discussion focuses on issues regarding the measurement of individualism, collectivism, and ethnic identity
HOW, WHEN, AND FOR WHOM? TOWARD A NUANCED UNDERSTANDING OF THE RELATION BETWEEN AFRICAN AMERICAN ETHNIC IDENTITY AND MENTAL HEALTH
This study uses a causal modeling approach based on structural equation modeling to examine specific hypotheses regarding the relation among ethnic identity, its components, and various mental health outcomes in African American emerging adults. Data was provided by college students at the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University. Results did not support a relation between ethnic identity components and adverse mental health. Ethnic identity components were related to positive mental health outcomes; however, this relation differed between gender groups. Among females, the ethnic identity component traditionally labeled ethnic commitment significantly predicted both positive mental health outcomes included in this study. Among males, only life satisfaction was predicted by ethnic identity, and this relation appeared to depend on the component of ethnic identity traditionally labeled ethnic exploration. Findings are discussed in terms of their implications for the current understanding of ethnic identity and its development among African American emerging adults

In light of the methodology employed, we weigh different potential interpretations of the findings and make recommendations for future studies. (JINS, 2007, 13, 212–214.
This research project was carried out with the participation of primary school teachers from the Pascual Correa Flórez educational institution in the municipality of Amagá - Antioquia who were in charge of the area of mathematics. The research question for this purpose was: how do primary school teachers re-signify direct and inverse proportionality from an ethnomathematical perspective? With this, to analyze the ways in which teachers enrich with other meanings and forms of life, the concept of proportionality from an ethnomathematical perspective. Jointly, a qualitative methodological paradigm was assumed for the development of the present proposal Framed from the perspective of research educational action based on ethnomathematics. However, for the purposes of production and registration of information, we have the support of the teachers who guide the area of mathematics, in the primary of the educational institution mentioned above. Where surveys, class observations, a paper, workshops, recordings, photographs and general reflections were carried out. In the same direction, for the accomplishment of the present proposal four on-site visits were made to the teachers. Subsequently, for the analysis of the records and the information provided, it was made taking into account four significant aspects: I). The disciplinary knowledge of the teachers about the object of study (proportionality). II). The (RE) meaning of the object of study through its aulic practices. III. The use of context in the teaching of mathematics (contributions from ethnomathematics) and IV). The valuation of extracurricular knowledge within the classroom. It was therefore considered that the experience during the implementation of the present project Allowed to generate in the participating teachers spaces of reflection on the enrichment of the meanings of a mathematical object, the different ways of conducting the teaching from the ethnomathematics The immersion of culture within the mathematics curriculum, thus allowing the strengthening of idiosyncrasy, recognition of extracurricular practices and indigenous values of human groups
Conductor of the Old Eighth: Harriet M. Marshall
Presented on Friday, February 21 as part of Messiah College’s 2020 Humanities Symposium. This exhibit, “Vulnerabilities & Securities in Historic Harrisburg: From Abolition to Suffrage,” was produced by the Center for Public Humanities Student Fellows and Dr. Sarah Myers’s Public History Class.
Harriet McClintock Marshall was born in 1840. Her mother, Catherine, was one of the founding members of Wesley Union African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, and Harriet worked with her mother to continue establishing the church\u27s reputation. Wesley Union, located on Tanner\u27s Alley, was a haven for those seeking freedom through the Underground Railroad. Harriet\u27s and her mother\u27s work in the Underground Railroad grew even more dangerous - and illegal - with the passage of 1850 Fugitive Slave Act. The church\u27s proximity to the Mason-Dixon Line increased the risk.

Implantation of 3D-Printed Patient-Specific Aneurysm Models into Cadaveric Specimens: A New Training Paradigm to Allow for Improvements in Cerebrovascular Surgery and Research.
AimTo evaluate the feasibility of implanting 3D-printed brain aneurysm model in human cadavers and to assess their utility in neurosurgical research, complex case management/planning, and operative training.MethodsTwo 3D-printed aneurysm models, basilar apex and middle cerebral artery, were generated and implanted in four cadaveric specimens. The aneurysms were implanted at the same anatomical region as the modeled patient. Pterional and orbitozygomatic approaches were done on each specimen. The aneurysm implant, manipulation capabilities, and surgical clipping were evaluated.ResultsThe 3D aneurysm models were successfully implanted to the cadaveric specimens' arterial circulation in all cases. The features of the neck in terms of flexibility and its relationship with other arterial branches allowed for the practice of surgical maneuvering characteristic to aneurysm clipping. Furthermore, the relationship of the aneurysm dome with the surrounding structures allowed for better understanding of the aneurysmal local mass effect. Noticeably, all of these observations were done in a realistic environment provided by our customized embalming model for neurosurgical simulation.Conclusion3D aneurysms models implanted in cadaveric specimens may represent an untapped training method for replicating clip technique; for practicing certain approaches to aneurysms specific to a particular patient; and for improving neurosurgical research
Pericentromeric heterochromatin is hierarchically organized and spatially contacts H3K9me2 islands in euchromatin.
Membraneless pericentromeric heterochromatin (PCH) domains play vital roles in chromosome dynamics and genome stability. However, our current understanding of 3D genome organization does not include PCH domains because of technical challenges associated with repetitive sequences enriched in PCH genomic regions. We investigated the 3D architecture of Drosophila melanogaster PCH domains and their spatial associations with the euchromatic genome by developing a novel analysis method that incorporates genome-wide Hi-C reads originating from PCH DNA. Combined with cytogenetic analysis, we reveal a hierarchical organization of the PCH domains into distinct territories. Strikingly, H3K9me2-enriched regions embedded in the euchromatic genome show prevalent 3D interactions with the PCH domain. These spatial contacts require H3K9me2 enrichment, are likely mediated by liquid-liquid phase separation, and may influence organismal fitness. Our findings have important implications for how PCH architecture influences the function and evolution of both repetitive heterochromatin and the gene-rich euchromatin
Local productive systems: corporate strategies for development
The objective of this paper is to propose local productive systems as an industrial and development strategy. To comply with such objective, the theory of the local productive systems is presented and the reason of their importance in development is exposed. Two main conclusions arose: the first one is that local productive systems are a way of corporate agglomeration that is adequate for countries such as Colombia, which corporate census is mainly composed by small and middle sized businesses; and the second one is that they do work as incentives for community development when thinking on development from the territory.O objetivo deste artigo é propor aos sistemas produtivos locais como uma estratégia de industrialização e desenvolvimento.
