Rationality: a social-epistemology perspective
Both in philosophy and in psychology, human rationality has traditionally been studied from an "individualistic" perspective. Recently, social epistemologists have drawn attention to the fact that epistemic interactions among agents also give rise to important questions concerning rationality. In previous work, we have used a formal model to assess the risk that a particular type of social-epistemic interactions lead agents with initially consistent belief states into inconsistent belief states. Here, we continue this work by investigating the dynamics to which these interactions may give rise in the population as a whole
An asymptotic induced numerical method for the convection-diffusion-reaction equation
A parallel algorithm for the efficient solution of a time dependent reaction convection diffusion equation with small parameter on the diffusion term is presented. The method is based on a domain decomposition that is dictated by singular perturbation analysis. The analysis is used to determine regions where certain reduced equations may be solved in place of the full equation. Parallelism is evident at two levels. Domain decomposition provides parallelism at the highest level, and within each domain there is ample opportunity to exploit parallelism. Run time results demonstrate the viability of the method
From Loop Groups to 2-Groups
We describe an interesting relation between Lie 2-algebras, the Kac-Moody
central extensions of loop groups, and the group String(n). A Lie 2-algebra is
a categorified version of a Lie algebra where the Jacobi identity holds up to a
natural isomorphism called the "Jacobiator". Similarly, a Lie 2-group is a
categorified version of a Lie group. If G is a simply-connected compact simple
Lie group, there is a 1-parameter family of Lie 2-algebras g_k each having
Lie(G) as its Lie algebra of objects, but with a Jacobiator built from the
canonical 3-form on G. There appears to be no Lie 2-group having g_k as its Lie
2-algebra, except when k = 0. Here, however, we construct for integral k an
infinite-dimensional Lie 2-group whose Lie 2-algebra is equivalent to g_k. The
objects of this 2-group are based paths in G, while the automorphisms of any
object form the level-k Kac-Moody central extension of the loop group of G.
This 2-group is closely related to the kth power of the canonical gerbe over G.
Its nerve gives a topological group that is an extension of G by K(Z,2). When k
= +-1, this topological group can also be obtained by killing the third
homotopy group of G. Thus, when G = Spin(n), it is none other than String(n).Comment: 40 page
Solar mass-varying neutrino oscillations
We propose that the solar neutrino deficit may be due to oscillations of
mass-varying neutrinos (MaVaNs). This scenario elucidates solar neutrino data
beautifully while remaining comfortably compatible with atmospheric neutrino
and K2K data and with reactor antineutrino data at short and long baselines
(from CHOOZ and KamLAND). We find that the survival probability of solar MaVaNs
is independent of how the suppression of neutrino mass caused by the
acceleron-matter couplings varies with density. Measurements of MeV and lower
energy solar neutrinos will provide a rigorous test of the idea.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. Version to appear in PR
The Asian Five Dragons: What’s the Relationship of Confucianism and Gender Inequality?
Confucianism is not only a historically important belief system, but it also continues to be rooted in many societies today, particularly in East and Southeast Asia. The growing influence of some of these Confucian-ingrained societies on the international stage justifies expanding the limited literature present on Confucianism and its societal implications. Using a conceptualization of heavily influenced Confucian societies previously set out by earlier research, this paper evaluates the validity of the common age-old assumption that Confucianism is correlated with greater gender inequality, as determined by the World 2016 dataset. Specifically, research suggests that the opposite correlation might just as equally be present in Confucian influenced societies today. This study tests the hypothesis that Confucian influence leads to lower gender inequality today compared to other influence systems. While the results cannot fully support the proposed hypothesis, the findings contribute considerable value to the limited Confucian literature by presenting strong statistical reasoning to doubt the common assumption of Confucianism being correlated with greater gender inequality
Experience and Enjoy Therapeutic West African Drumming
This presentation is designed to introduce the benefits of a therapeutic West African drumming program to educators and mental health professionals. Participants will engage in a basic drumming class where they will experience the academic and socio-emotional benefits of drumming while practicing an African rhythm. How to relate American School Counselor Association (ASCA) standards as well as Georgia Performance Standards (GPS) and Common Core Georgia Performance Standards (CCGPS) will be explained and demonstrated by the presentation facilitators
STUDI KARAKTERISTIK MOMEN TORSI AKUMULATOR PEGAS UNTUK PENGGERAK LANGKAH (STEP-DRIVES)
Abstrak This paper considers and analyzes the torque characteristics of spring accumulators with output rotary link, designed for stepper drives, reciprocating movements and in balancing systems, provides recommendations for their use. General idea of realization of the principle of recuperation with accumulation of potential energy of the deformed springs in this work consists in use of spring accumulators with cylindrical springs of tension or compression
