    The application was made on behalf of the undergraduate courses team who sought to enhance the first year experience by engaging students in the practice of business. The intention was to develop and signpost enterprising qualities and characteristics in first year learners and develop confidence as well as competence. The undergraduate review for FBL commenced in September 2009. This offered an opportunity to innovate and build good practice in enterprise learning as a pilot to inform the undergraduate review. The team sought to provide a coherent and relevant set of learning experiences that could be achieved outside structured curriculum that would enable learning through live projects

    Quantum Field Theory for the Three-Body Constrained Lattice Bose Gas -- Part II: Application to the Many-Body Problem

    We analyze the ground state phase diagram of attractive lattice bosons, which are stabilized by a three-body onsite hardcore constraint. A salient feature of this model is an Ising type transition from a conventional atomic superfluid to a dimer superfluid with vanishing atomic condensate. The study builds on an exact mapping of the constrained model to a theory of coupled bosons with polynomial interactions, proposed in a related paper [11]. In this framework, we focus by analytical means on aspects of the phase diagram which are intimately connected to interactions, and are thus not accessible in a mean field plus spin wave approach. First, we determine shifts in the mean field phase border, which are most pronounced in the low density regime. Second, the investigation of the strong coupling limit reveals the existence of a new collective mode, which emerges as a consequence of enhanced symmetries in this regime. Third, we show that the Ising type phase transition, driven first order via the competition of long wavelength modes at generic fillings, terminates into a true Ising quantum critical point in the vicinity of half filling.Comment: 22 pages, 5 figure

    Colorectal Cancer Screening Behaviors among American Indians in the Midwest

    Colorectal cancer is the second most diagnosed cancer among American Indians and is also the second leading cause of cancer death. We used a community-based participatory approach to conduct a mixed methods study to examine colorectal cancer screening behaviors. Here we report on the screening behaviors of our focus group participants (n=153). There were significant gender differences in the colorectal cancer screening rates for FOBT and colonoscopy. Although over 80% of participants reported having health insurance, only 35% of males over 50 years old and 57% of females reported ever having a colonoscopy. More research is needed to identify the causes of gender differences in colorectal cancer screening rates among American Indians. The results of the current study provide new information on the prevalence of colorectal cancer screening among American Indians living in the Midwestern (Kansas and Missouri) portion of the country

    Slingshot prominences, formation, ejection and cycle frequency in cool stars

    Stars lose mass and angular momentum during their lifetimes. Observations of H-alpha absorption of a number of low mass stars, show prominences transiting the stellar disc and being ejected into the extended stellar wind. Analytic modelling have shown these M-dwarf coronal structures growing to be orders of magnitude larger than their solar counterparts. This makes prominences responsible for mass and angular momentum loss comparable to that due to the stellar wind. We present results from a numerical study which used magnetohydrodynamic simulations to model the balance between gravity, magnetic confinement, and rotational acceleration. This allows us to study the time dependent nature of prominence formation. We demonstrate that a prominence, formed beyond the co-rotation radius, is ejected into the extended stellar wind in the slingshot prominence paradigm. Mass, angular momentum flux and ejection frequency have been calculated for a representative cool star, in the so-called Thermal Non-Equilibrium (TNE) regime.Peer reviewe

    A feasibility study of the effects of implementing a staff-level recovery-oriented training intervention older people’s mental health services

    Objectives: The concept of recovery has exerted considerable traction in mental health services for adults of working age, but less so in older people’s mental health services. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of a staff-level recovery intervention in older people’s mental health services.Method: The study used a mixed-method pre-post design. The study took place in NHS older people’s mental health services, UK. Staff participants were multi-disciplinary mental health team members from the same service. The intervention was a manualised staff-level recovery intervention called the Older Adults Recovery Intervention (OARI). Measurement included the Recovery Knowledge Inventory and the Recovery Attitudes Questionnaire (RAQ-7) as well as fidelity data and in-depth qualitative interviews.Results: OARI was delivered to 204 staff in 15 clinical teams. There was a statistically significant change towards improvement in four of the six recovery attitude and knowledge sub-scales. There were positive findings in change in practice at individual level, but not at team level. A number of context barriers were identified leading to the intervention not being delivered as intended.Conclusions: Further development of OARI will involve a clearer distinction about the practice implications for service users with dementia versus functional illnesses, a stronger focus on implementation support, more use of evidence in training materials and a tailoring of context to meet professional group training needs. Overall, this study contributes novel data to the evidence base for recovery within older people’s mental health services

    Energy as an Entanglement Witness for Quantum Many-Body Systems

    We investigate quantum many-body systems where all low-energy states are entangled. As a tool for quantifying such systems, we introduce the concept of the entanglement gap, which is the difference in energy between the ground-state energy and the minimum energy that a separable (unentangled) state may attain. If the energy of the system lies within the entanglement gap, the state of the system is guaranteed to be entangled. We find Hamiltonians that have the largest possible entanglement gap; for a system consisting of two interacting spin-1/2 subsystems, the Heisenberg antiferromagnet is one such example. We also introduce a related concept, the entanglement-gap temperature: the temperature below which the thermal state is certainly entangled, as witnessed by its energy. We give an example of a bipartite Hamiltonian with an arbitrarily high entanglement-gap temperature for fixed total energy range. For bipartite spin lattices we prove a theorem demonstrating that the entanglement gap necessarily decreases as the coordination number is increased. We investigate frustrated lattices and quantum phase transitions as physical phenomena that affect the entanglement gap.Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures, published versio
