Emotional Labour and the Autonomy of Dependent Self-Employed Workers: The Limitations of Digital Managerial Control in the Home Credit sector
Changes to the labour process in the home credit sector have exposed the industry’s agency workforce to increased levels of digital managerial control through the introduction of digital lending applications and algorithmic decision-making techniques. This article highlights the heterogeneous nature of the impact of digitalisation on the labour process and worker autonomy – specifically, workers’ engagement in unquantified emotional labour. By considering the limitations of digital control in relation to qualitative elements of the labour process, it becomes evident that emotional labour has the scope to be a source of autonomy for dependent self-employed workers when set against a backdrop of heightened digital automation and algorithmic control. This article therefore contributes to ongoing labour process debates surrounding digitalisation, quantified workers and algorithmic managerial control
Lung adenocarcinoma originates from retrovirus infection of proliferating type 2 pneumocytes during pulmonary post-natal development or tissue repair
Jaagsiekte sheep retrovirus (JSRV) is a unique oncogenic virus with distinctive biological properties. JSRV is the only virus causing a naturally occurring lung cancer (ovine pulmonary adenocarcinoma, OPA) and possessing a major structural protein that functions as a dominant oncoprotein. Lung cancer is the major cause of death among cancer patients. OPA can be an extremely useful animal model in order to identify the cells originating lung adenocarcinoma and to study the early events of pulmonary carcinogenesis. In this study, we demonstrated that lung adenocarcinoma in sheep originates from infection and transformation of proliferating type 2 pneumocytes (termed here lung alveolar proliferating cells, LAPCs). We excluded that OPA originates from a bronchioalveolar stem cell, or from mature post-mitotic type 2 pneumocytes or from either proliferating or non-proliferating Clara cells. We show that young animals possess abundant LAPCs and are highly susceptible to JSRV infection and transformation. On the contrary, healthy adult sheep, which are normally resistant to experimental OPA induction, exhibit a relatively low number of LAPCs and are resistant to JSRV infection of the respiratory epithelium. Importantly, induction of lung injury increased dramatically the number of LAPCs in adult sheep and rendered these animals fully susceptible to JSRV infection and transformation. Furthermore, we show that JSRV preferentially infects actively dividing cell in vitro. Overall, our study provides unique insights into pulmonary biology and carcinogenesis and suggests that JSRV and its host have reached an evolutionary equilibrium in which productive infection (and transformation) can occur only in cells that are scarce for most of the lifespan of the sheep. Our data also indicate that, at least in this model, inflammation can predispose to retroviral infection and cancer
Feminised Cultural Capital at Work in The Moral Economy: Home Credit and Working-Class Women

There is a prevailing and pervasive narrative in the sector that women make superior agents, largely based on the belief that female agents can manage relationships with borrowers more successfully than their male counterparts. This article analyzes data from 349,078 home credit accounts (loans), as well as 71 interviews with home credit agents and lending company managers, to evaluate both the myths and realities of women's roles in home credit. The data is also used to explore the opportunities for—and potential constraints on—women's career progression in home credit work, based on an understanding of the moral economy in which they operate. By exploring the moral economy of low-income communities, the article highlights the role of working-class women's cultural capital within the labor market. Despite women forming the majority of the agent workforce in home credit, women's capital is undervalued in comparison with their male counterparts' capital. The analysis within this article allows a greater understanding of the highly classed and gendered nature of the moral economy of low-income communities and the exchange value of women's capital within the labor market
Jaagsiekte Sheep Retrovirus and Enzootic Nasal Tumor Virus Promoters Drive Gene Expression in All Airway Epithelial Cells of Mice but Only Induce Tumors in the Alveolar Region of the Lungsâ–¿â€
Jaagsiekte sheep retrovirus (JSRV) induces tumors in the distal airways of sheep and goats, while the closely related enzootic nasal tumor virus type 1 (ENTV-1) and ENTV-2 induce tumors in the nasal epithelium of sheep and goats, respectively. When expressed using a strong Rous sarcoma virus promoter, the envelope proteins of these viruses induce tumors in the respiratory tract of mice, but only in the distal airway. To examine the role of the retroviral long terminal repeat (LTR) promoters in determining tissue tropism, adeno-associated virus (AAV) vectors expressing alkaline phosphatase under the control of the JSRV, ENTV-1, or ENTV-2 LTRs were generated and administered to mice. The JSRV LTR was active in all airway epithelial cells, while the ENTV LTRs were active in the nasal epithelium and alveolar type II cells but poorly active in tracheal and bronchial epithelial cells. When vectors were administered systemically, the ENTV-1 and -2 LTRs were inactive in major organs examined, whereas the JSRV showed high-level activity in the liver. When a putative transcriptional enhancer from the 3′ end of the env gene was inserted upstream of the JSRV and ENTV-1 LTRs in the AAV vectors, a dramatic increase in transgene expression was observed. However, intranasal administration of AAV vectors containing any combination of ENTV or JSRV LTRs and Env proteins induced tumors only in the lower airway. Our results indicate that mice do not provide an adequate model for nasal tumor induction by ENTV despite our ability to express genes in the nasal epithelium
