Coupling Schemes for an n su(2) Spin System
In the framework of the Schwinger boson representation for the su(2)-algebra,
the closed form is derived for the total spin eigenstates which result from the
coupling of n su(2)-spins. In order to demonstrate its usefulness, the
orthogonal set for the so(5)-algebra, which is reduced to four su(2)-spin
systems, is obtained.Comment: 19 pages, no figur
Beyond Covariation: Cues to Causal Structure
Causal induction has two components: learning about the structure of causal models and learning about causal strength and other quantitative parameters. This chapter argues for several interconnected theses. First, people represent causal knowledge qualitatively, in terms of causal structure; quantitative knowledge is derivative. Second, people use a variety of cues to infer causal structure aside from statistical data (e.g. temporal order, intervention, coherence with prior knowledge). Third, once a structural model is hypothesized, subsequent statistical data are used to confirm, refute, or elaborate the model. Fourth, people are limited in the number and complexity of causal models that they can hold in mind to test, but they can separately learn and then integrate simple models, and revise models by adding and removing single links. Finally, current computational models of learning need further development before they can be applied to human learning
Growth rate and superconducting properties of Gd-Ba-Cu-O bulk superconductors melt processed in air
A generic Mg-doped Nd-Ba-Cu-O seed crystal has been developed recently for the fabrication of any type of rare earth (RE) based (RE)-Ba-Cu-O single grain bulk superconductor in air. The new generic seed simplifies significantly the top seeded melt growth (TSMG) process for light rare earth based (Nd, Sm, Gd, or mixed rare earth elements) bulk superconductors, in particular. GdBCO single grains have been fabricated successfully in air using the new seed in a cold-seeding process. In this study, precursor powders were enriched with different amounts of BaO2 to investigate the extent of substitution of Gd for Ba in the Gd1+xBa2-xCu3O7-delta solid solution phase. The growth process of large single grains in air was investigated at various growth temperatures under isothermal processing conditions. Crystal growth rate as a function of under-cooling and BaO2 content has been determined from these experiments. The spatial variation of Tc and transition temperature width for applied field aligned along the a/b and c-axis of grains fabricated with different BaO2 content has also been investigated in order to understand the extent of the formation of Gd/Ba solid solution with varying growth temperature and precursor composition. These results have been used to establish the optimum conditions for fabricating solid solution-free, large single grains of GdBCO in air
First Order Quark-Hadron Phase Transition in the NJL-Type Nuclear and Quark Model
The quark-hadron phase transition at finite baryon chemical potential is
investigated in the extended Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model in which the
scalar-vector eight-point interaction is included holding the chiral symmetry.
By comparing a pressure of the symmetric nuclear matter with that of the quark
matter, the realized phase at given baryon density is determined. As a result,
the first order quark-hadron phase transition is derived where the
deconfinement transition occurs after the chiral symmetry restoration in this
model.Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures, using PTPTeXclas
New boson realization of the Lipkin model obeying the su(2)-algebra
New boson representation of the su(2)-algebra proposed by the present authors
for describing the damped and amplified oscillator is examined in the Lipkin
model as one of simple many-fermion models. This boson representation is
expressed in terms of two kinds of bosons with a certain positive parameter. In
order to describe the case of any fermion number, third boson is introduced.
Through this examination, it is concluded that this representation is well
workable for the boson realization of the Lipkin model in any fermion number.Comment: 7 pages, no figur
