    Phase II of the ASCE Benchmark Study on SHM

    The task group on structural health monitoring of the Dynamic Committee of ASCE was formed in 1999 at the 12 th Engineering Mechanics Conference. The task group has designed a number of analytical studies on a benchmark structure and there are plans to follow these with an experimental program. The first phase of the analytical studies was completed in 2001. The second phase, initiated in the summer of 2001, was formulated in the light of the experience gained on phase I and focuses on increasing realism in the simulation of the discrepancies between the actual structure and the mathematical model used in the analysis. This paper describes the rational that lead the SHM task group to the definition of phase II and presents the details of the cases that are being considered

    Motion of vortices in type II superconductors

    The methods of formal asymptotics are used to examine the behaviour of a system of curvilinear vortices in a type II superconductor as the thickness of the vortex cores tends to zero. The vortices then appear as singularities in the field equation and are analagous to line vortices in inviscid hydrodynamics. A local analysis near each vortex core gives an equation of motion governing the evolution of these singularities

    Crossover from 2D to 3D in a weakly interacting Fermi gas

    We have studied the transition from two to three dimensions in a low temperature weakly interacting 6^6Li Fermi gas. Below a critical atom number, N2DN_{2D}, only the lowest transverse vibrational state of a highly anisotropic oblate trapping potential is occupied and the gas is two-dimensional. Above N2DN_{2D} the Fermi gas enters the quasi-2D regime where shell structure associated with the filling of individual transverse oscillator states is apparent. This dimensional crossover is demonstrated through measurements of the cloud size and aspect ratio versus atom number.Comment: Replaced with published manuscrip

    Statistical characterization of the forces on spheres in an upflow of air

    The dynamics of a sphere fluidized in a nearly-levitating upflow of air were previously found to be identical to those of a Brownian particle in a two-dimensional harmonic trap, consistent with a Langevin equation [Ojha {\it et al.}, Nature {\bf 427}, 521 (2004)]. The random forcing, the drag, and the trapping potential represent different aspects of the interaction of the sphere with the air flow. In this paper we vary the experimental conditions for a single sphere, and report on how the force terms in the Langevin equation scale with air flow speed, sphere radius, sphere density, and system size.     Medical Imaging Utilization Trends in Radiation Oncology over the Past Decade

    Purpose/Objective(s): We quantify the increase in use of pre-treatment imaging and verification imaging in radiation oncology over the past decade. We also quantify the trend towards hypofractionation, which has partially led to increased imaging. Materials/Methods: The pre-treatment and verification imaging data used are from a single, tertiary, university-affiliated cancer center. Pre-treatment imaging was defined as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET) and four-dimensional computed tomography (4DCT). Verification imaging was defined as cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). All treatment approved plans were included from 2012 to 2021. Data extraction was performed using custom scripts interfacing with the treatment planning system (TPS) and patient information system. All registered image-sets of planning CT images with either advanced pre-treatment advanced imaging or verification images in the TPS were included. Hypofractionation sub-analysis was performed according to plans above and below 4 Gy per fraction that received a combination of pre-treatment and verification imaging. Results: Between 2012 and 2021, a total of 42,214 plans were included. In 2021, MRI, PET, and 4DCT pre-treatment imaging modalities were used for 14%, 5%, and 3% of patients, respectively, which was an increase from 5%, 2%, and 0%, in 2012. In 2021, 55% of patients received CBCT for verification imaging compared to only 2% of patients in 2012. In the sub-analysis, cohort receiving greater than or equal to 4 Gy per fraction from 2012 to 2021, the percent of patients receiving one of MRI or PET for pre-treatment imaging and CBCT guidance for verification imaging increased from 1% to 22%. For the cohort receiving less than 4 Gy per fraction, there was an increase from 2012 to 2021 of 0% to 14% of patients receiving at least one of MRI or PET pretreatment imaging and CBCT for verification imaging. Table 1: Annual use of advanced pre-treatment, verification imaging, hypofractionation, and associated combination imaging shown. Entries indicate the percent (%) of patients per year with the imaging modality used in their treatment. Conclusion: An increase in the adoption of advanced medical imaging was observed in standard of care treatments over the past 10 years. Imaging utilization continues to increase as clinical trial evidence matures. Further analysis could focus on the gap between desired standard of care for patients and the current offerings as well as the increase in capital and human resource requirement for implementation of these advancements

    Operation modes of battery chargers for electric vehicles in the future smart grids

    This paper presents an on-board bidirectional battery charger for Electric Vehicles (EVs), which operates in three different modes: Grid-to- Vehicle (G2V), Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G), and Vehicle-to-Home (V2H). Through these three operation modes, using bidirectional communications based on Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), it will be possible to exchange data between the EV driver and the future smart grids. This collaboration with the smart grids will strengthen the collective awareness systems, contributing to solve and organize issues related with energy resources and power grids. This paper presents the preliminary studies that results from a PhD work related with bidirectional battery chargers for EVs. Thus, in this paper is described the topology of the on-board bidirectional battery charger and the control algorithms for the three operation modes.
