Cursos pré-vestibulares populares e aprendizagem da docência: alguns encontros
This study focuses on the learning of teaching of seven teachers at CPV. The CPV is characterized for being directed to social and economically unfavorable population belonging to São Carlos and its surroundings. This study relies on educational literature about teachers’ formation and it indicates that their learning occurs as a continuum and they acquire new knowledge and remake their practice as result of reflexive thoughts about their own teaching. Based on the data of interviews with participants, it is possible to observe that teachers start to rethink about teaching from both the students’ demands and their own experiences. In addition, the teachers often develop outclass activities once they may be part of coordination group or be coordinator in their work teaching areas. All the work made by teachers during selection process for new students (that occurs every year) makes them more reflexives in relation to the attended population’s social and economic condition. Thus, the learning that comes from these experiences contributes to a new perception on their own teaching practice
Neutron Star Radius-to-mass Ratio from Partial Accretion Disc Occultation as Measured through Fe K Line Profiles
We present a new method to measure the radius-to-mass ratio (R/M) of weakly
magnetic, disc-accreting neutron stars by exploiting the occultation of parts
of the inner disc by the star itself. This occultation imprints characteristic
features on the X-ray line profile that are unique and are expected to be
present in low mass X-ray binary systems seen under inclinations higher than
~65 degrees. We analyse a NuSTAR observation of a good candidate system, 4U
1636-53, and find that X-ray spectra from current instrumentation are unlikely
to single out the occultation features owing to insufficient signal-to-noise.
Based on an extensive set of simulations we show that large-area X-ray
detectors of the future generation could measure R/M to ~2{\div}3% precision
over a range of inclinations. Such is the precision in radius determination
required to derive tight constraints on the equation of state of ultradense
matter and it represents the goal that other methods too aim to achieve in the
future.Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures; this is a pre-print edition of an article that

Higher levels of osteoprotegerin and immune activation/immunosenescence markers are correlated with concomitant bone and endovascular damage in HIV-suppressed patients
HIV-infected patients appear to have a significantly greater risk of non-AIDS comorbidities such as osteoporosis and atherosclerosis. Subjects with osteoporosis are at a higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease than those with normal bone mass, therefore a possible relation between these two conditions can be hypothesized. In the setting of HIV infection, several factors might contribute to bone disease and endothelial dysfunction. The aim of our study was to evaluate the relationship between bone and cardiovascular disease and to investigate the role of traditional factors, T-cell phenotype and osteoprotegerin in HIV positive subjects on effective antiretroviral therapy. We included 94 HIV positive subjects on antiretroviral therapy with virological suppression and 41 healthy subjects matched for age and gender as a control group. Carotid-Intima Media Thickness (c-IMT) and bone mineral density (BMD) were performed by ultrasound and DEXA, respectively. CD4+/CD8+ T-cell activation, senescence and osteoprotegerin plasma levels were measured by flow-cytometry and ELISA, respectively. Among HIV positive patients, 56.4% had osteopenia/osteoporosis and 45.7% had pathological c-IMT (>0.9mm). Subjects with pathological c-IMT and BMD exhibited higher CD4+ and CD8+ activated, CD8+ senescent and osteoprotegerin than subjects with normal c-IMT and BMD. HIV positive subjects with osteopenia/osteoporosis had higher c-IMT than subjects with normal BMD, and linear regression analysis showed a negative correlation between BMD and c-IMT. Several factors are implicated in the pathogenesis of non-AIDS comorbidities in HIV positive patients. Osteoprotegerin together with inflammation and immunosenescence in HIV positive patients could affect bone and vascular system and could be considered as a possible common link between these two diseases
Suggestive evidence of a multi-cytokine resistin pathway in humans and its role on cardiovascular events in high-risk individuals
In cells and tissues resistin affects IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, IL-12 and TNF-α expression, thus suggesting the existence of a multi-cytokine "resistin pathway". We investigated whether such pathway does exist in humans and, if so, if it is associated with cardiovascular risk factors and with major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE). Serum cytokines were measured in 280 healthy subjects from the Gargano Study 2 (GS2) whose BMI, waist circumference, HOMA IR, triglycerides, HDL-cholesterol, systolic and diastolic blood pressure data were available and in 353 patients with type 2 diabetes and coronary artery disease from the Gargano Heart Study (GHS)-prospective design (follow-up 5.4 ± 2.5 years; 71 MACE). In GS2, cytokines mRNA levels in white blood cells were also measured. In GS2, resistin mRNA was correlated with all cytokines expression (all p < 0.001), but IL-12B. Consistently, serum resistin was correlated with all serum cytokines (all p < 0.001), but IL-12. Expression (eRPS) and serum (sRPS) resistin pathway scores (excluding IL-12) were each other correlated (p < 0.001) and both associated with cardiovascular risk factors (all p < 0.01). In GHS, sRPS was independently associated with MACE (HR = 1.44, 95% CI = 1.10-1.90). Our data indicate the existence of a resistin pathway, which is associated with cardiovascular risk factors and which strongly and independently predicts MACE
Long-term effects of different starter yeasts on colour and natural antioxidant power of red wines
AbstractEighty-seven red wines produced from red grapes of the grape variety Gaglioppo from the Calabria region (vintage 2009) were analysed by standard methods after 4 and 120 months of ageing. So, a total of 29 selected starters of Saccharomyces cerevisiae—3 wild type, 12 monoclonal cultures, and 14 hybrids—inoculated in triplicate were studied for their effects on colour and natural antioxidant power keeping of red wine. Wine ageing decreased the red component, the colour intensity, and the DPPH values while the colour hue values increased. This research has shown that the evolution of wine ageing is affected in a very different way by the starter yeast used and has allowed choosing the best yeast strain useful to produce red wine able to endure very long-time ageing, until 10 years

Invasive Candida infection: epidemiology, clinical and therapeutic aspects of an evolving disease and the role of rezafungin
Introduction: Invasive Candida Infections (ICIs) have undergone a series of significant epidemiological, pathophysiological, and clinical changes during the last decades, with a shift toward non-albicans species, an increase in the rate of exogenous infections and clinical manifestations ranging from candidemia to an array of highly invasive and life-threatening clinical syndromes. The long-acting echinocandin rezafungin exhibits potent in-vitro activity against most wild-type and azole-resistant Candida spp. including C. auris. Areas covered: The following topics regarding candidemia only and ICIs were reviewed and addressed: i) pathogenesis; ii) epidemiology and temporal evolution of Candida species; iii) clinical approach; iv) potential role of the novel long-acting rezafungin in the treatment of ICIs. Expert opinion: Authors' expert opinion focused on considering the potential role of rezafungin in the evolving context of ICIs. Rezafungin, which combines a potent in-vitro activity against Candida species, including azole-resistant strains and C. auris, with a low likelihood of drug-drug interactions and a good safety profile, may revolutionize the treatment of candidemia/ICI. Indeed, it may shorten the length of hospital stays when clinical conditions allow and extend outpatient access to treatment of invasive candidiasis, especially when prolonged treatment duration is expected
Synthesis and Evaluation of Cytostatic and Antiviral Activities of 3′ and 4′-Avarone Derivatives
A series of 3′ and 4′-substituted avarone derivatives were synthesized and tested in culture systems as antitumour and antiviral agents in comparison to avarol and avarone. 3′-alkylamino derivatives showed potent cytostatic activities against murine L1210 and human B (Raji) and T (C8166, H9) lymphoblast cells (ID50 range 1.7–3.7 μm). Avarol and avarone were six times less active. While none of the derivatives showed anti-human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) activity superior to that of the parent compounds, most of them, avarol and avarone included, were potent and selective inhibitors of poliovirus multiplication
