Design and User Satisfaction of Interactive Maps for Visually Impaired People
Multimodal interactive maps are a solution for presenting spatial information
to visually impaired people. In this paper, we present an interactive
multimodal map prototype that is based on a tactile paper map, a multi-touch
screen and audio output. We first describe the different steps for designing an
interactive map: drawing and printing the tactile paper map, choice of
multi-touch technology, interaction technologies and the software architecture.
Then we describe the method used to assess user satisfaction. We provide data
showing that an interactive map - although based on a unique, elementary,
double tap interaction - has been met with a high level of user satisfaction.
Interestingly, satisfaction is independent of a user's age, previous visual
experience or Braille experience. This prototype will be used as a platform to
design advanced interactions for spatial learning
Multipartite Entanglement and Quantum State Exchange
We investigate multipartite entanglement in relation to the theoretical
process of quantum state exchange. In particular, we consider such entanglement
for a certain pure state involving two groups of N trapped atoms. The state,
which can be produced via quantum state exchange, is analogous to the
steady-state intracavity state of the subthreshold optical nondegenerate
parametric amplifier. We show that, first, it possesses some 2N-way
entanglement. Second, we place a lower bound on the amount of such entanglement
in the state using a novel measure called the entanglement of minimum bipartite

Anisotropic superconductivity mediated by phonons in layered compounds with weak screening effect
Anisotropic pairing interactions mediated by phonons are examined in layer
systems. It is shown that the screening effects become weaker when the layer
spacing increases. Then the anisotropic components of the pairing interactions
increase with the screening length since the momentum dependence changes. As a
result, various types of anisotropic superconductivity occur depending on the
parameter region. For example, p-wave superconductivity occurs when the
short-range part of Coulomb repulsion is strong and the layer spacing is large.
Two kinds of inter-layer pairing may occur when the layer spacing is not too
large. Although the phonon contribution to the d-wave pairing interaction is
weaker than the p-wave interaction, it increases with the layer spacing.
Relevance of the present results to organic superconductors, high-T_c cuprates,

Discrimination of Potent Inhibitors of Toxoplasma gondii Enoyl-Acyl Carrier Protein Reductase by a Thermal Shift Assay
Many microbial pathogens rely on a type II fatty acid synthesis (FASII) pathway that is distinct from the type I pathway found in humans. Enoyl-acyl carrier protein reductase (ENR) is an essential FASII pathway enzyme and the target of a number of antimicrobial drug discovery efforts. The biocide triclosan is established as a potent inhibitor of ENR and has been the starting point for medicinal chemistry studies. We evaluated a series of triclosan analogues for their ability to inhibit the growth of Toxoplasma gondii, a pervasive human pathogen, and its ENR enzyme (TgENR). Several compounds that inhibited TgENR at low nanomolar concentrations were identified but could not be further differentiated because of the limited dynamic range of the TgENR activity assay. Thus, we adapted a thermal shift assay (TSA) to directly measure the dissociation constant (Kd) of the most potent inhibitors identified in this study as well as inhibitors from previous studies. Furthermore, the TSA allowed us to determine the mode of action of these compounds in the presence of the reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) or nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) cofactor. We found that all of the inhibitors bind to a TgENRâNAD+ complex but that they differed in their dependence on NAD+ concentration. Ultimately, we were able to identify compounds that bind to the TgENRâNAD+ complex in the low femtomolar range. This shows how TSA data combined with enzyme inhibition, parasite growth inhibition data, and ADMET predictions allow for better discrimination between potent ENR inhibitors for the future development of medicine

Energy dependence of commensurate neutron scattering peak in doped two-leg ladder antiferromagnet Sr_{14-x}Ca_{x}Cu_{24}O_{41}
The dynamical spin response of doped two-leg ladder antiferromagnets is
investigated based on the fermion-spin approach. Our calculations clearly
demonstrate a crossover from the incommensurate antiferromagnetism in the weak
interchain coupling regime to commensurate spin fluctuation in the strong
interchain coupling regime. In particular, the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation
rate extracted from the commensurate spin fluctuation decreases exponentially
with decreasing temperatures. The behaviors of the spin dynamics in the strong
coupling regime are quantitatively close to the experimental results of
Sr_{14-x}Ca_{x}Cu_{24}O_{41}.Comment: 13 pages, Revtex, four figures are include
Typification and authorship of Drosera intermedia (Droseraceae)
Drosera intermedia is lectotypified with the herbarium specimen on which the type drawing in the 1798 protologue was based. The collection history of the specimen, the history of the botanical drawing as original material, and the correct nomenclatural author and publication date of the name are presented based on historical notes and literature. Additionally, the global distribution of the species is given, including the first record from Africa
